TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran and Tajikistan talked about the financial issues surrounding Sangtuda 2 hydroelectric power plant, a project carried out by Iran in Tajikistan.

The 13th meeting of Iran-Tajikistan joint commission of economic cooperation opened in Tehran on Monday morning, attended by Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian and Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources Usmonali Usmonzoda.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the meeting, the Tajik minister said one of the most successful projects that Iranian companies have carried out in Tajikistan in recent years was the construction of Sangtuda 2 hydroelectric power plant.

Usmonzoda said the 220-megawatt power plant has come on stream and plays a major role in supplying the Central Asian country’s power demands in the wintertime.

He also noted that a series of financial issues relating to the power plant project and the purchase of electricity by Tajikistan would be discussed in the joint commission of economic cooperation on Monday and Tuesday.

Praising Iranian companies for involvement in multiple projects in Tajikistan, Usmonzoda said Iran has also embarked on a project to construct a hydroelectric power plant at Tajikistan’s Rogun Dam.

In June, the top diplomats of Iran and Tajikistan met in Tehran to explore avenues for the enhancement of relations between the two countries in various fields.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his visiting Tajik counterpart Sirodjidin Mukhriddin weighed plans to broaden the political and parliamentary cooperation between the two nations, strengthen the friendship groups, enhance economic interaction in the water, electricity and transportation sectors, hold political and consular consultations, expand the cultural and international cooperation within the framework of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and combat extremism and terrorism.

Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian said upon his arrival in Moscow that he is to meet with Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak and follow-up the latest developments of bilateral projects and agreements reached at the 15th joint economic cooperation commission of Iran and the Russian Federation.

Signing of an extension to the contract of Russia’s loan to Iran for construction of a 1400 MG thermal power plant in Sirik County, Hormozgan Province is among the priorities of the follow-ups, he added.

According to the agreement which was signed between Iran and Russia, Moscow was set to allocate one-billion USD loan to Tehran for construction of a power plant in southern Iran.

Referring to joining of Iran to Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Iranian Energy Minister mentioned that he is going to visit Secretary-General of the EAEU to discuss the latest cooperation between the two sides.

He said that Iran’s joining to the Eurasian Economic Union is an important event, adding that it is perhaps for the first time that Iran is actively engaged in a regional economic pact and would be a very effective way to develop economic and regional relations.

Iran-Russia joint economic cooperation commission has played a very effective role in activating Iran’s membership in the EAEU, as Russia is a key player in this important regional union, Ardakanian noted.

Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian accompanies Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Moscow as the head of Iran-Russia joint economic commission.

At the meeting hosted by the Eurasian Economic Commission on 28 August, Chairman of the EEC Board Tigran Sarkisyan and Iran’s ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei exchanged messages about completing the necessary procedures to enforce an interim agreement leading to the formation of the free trade zone between the EAEU and Iran. This means that the agreement will come into force on 27 October.

The parties also agreed to continue to cooperate to implement the agreement. The EAEU and Iran have already engaged in a dialogue on enhancing cooperation between the customs services. The parties are also negotiating a format of a business dialogue which is stipulated in the free trade zone agreement.

Once fully operational, it is expected to generate 421 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year.

Some 60% of the plant’s equipment has been supplied by domestic producers and the rest has been imported from China.

The launch of Sardasht power plant will be in line with efforts to boost electricity generation from non-fossil fuel sources, such as hydropower, and reduce harmful emissions. Sardasht dam has a capacity of 380 million cubic meters of water.

Hydropower constitutes almost 15%, or about 12,000 MW of Iran’s total installed power capacity of 81,000 MW.

Several small- and large-scale renewable farms are under construction, which will add some 416 MW of the clean power to the country’s total output in the current year.

Currently, over 100 large-scale farms ranging from 2MW to 12MW and over 2,000 small-scale and rooftop renewable power plants are operating across Iran, the number of which has noticeably been growing as Iranian households and small industries have embraced the new technology with open arms and investors also seem eager for more contribution in this area.

According to the Energy Ministry, Iran has also the know-how and capacity to manufacture most of the equipment required for generating wind power.

With more than 300 sunny days in a year, Iran has huge potentials to harness renewable energies, including geothermal, solar and wind power.

Currently, renewables account for only 6% of the total nominal power capacity (82,000 MW) in the country. So far, 43,450 people are involved in the construction, development and maintenance of solar, wind, hydroelectric, waste-to-energy and biomass power plants.

Close to 3.11 billion kilowatt hours of electricity has so far been generated from alternative energy sources over the past ten years reducing water and fossil fuel consumption.

Officials say Iran needs to expand power generating capacity by 5,000 MW annually, or 20,000 MW till 2022 to meet rising demand at home and expand its footprint in the regional energy market.

The Energy Ministry has devised plans to increase the generating capacity of renewables, by 5,000 MW in the same period.

A private sector initiative, the plant is one of the largest of its kind in Tehran province, which will be established in a 70-hectare area in Pishva Industrial Town.

The construction operation will commence soon and is expected to be completed in three years. The project is envisaged to create over 500 jobs during the construction and 180 jobs when the plant goes on stream.

A total of 123 thermal power plants are operational in the country. Thermal units, which either use steam, gas-powered or combined-cycle turbines, account for 65,000 MW of Iran’s total electricity production which stands at 82,000 MW.

Last year 8,000 MW was added to the national network. Plans call for increasing the output to 85,000 MW by next March.

The move to expand the power infrastructure comes to help meet the consumption demands in the sizzling season of summer, which according to reports, rise between 5% and 8% per annum.

Iran’s electricity industry is 14th in the world in terms of output and 19th in consumption.

Electricity consumption reached a peak of 58,000 megawatts last summer, some 2,600 MW more than that of a year before.

In his visit to Kashan Combined Cycle Power Plant, Jahangiri visited various units of this giant project and was briefed on the construction operation trend and specifications of this project.

Construction operation of steam unit of the Kashan Combined Cycle Power Plant started in 2015, costing over 16,500 billion rials.

Kashan Combined Cycle Power Plant was equipped with two gas units with the total capacity of 324 megawatts. By commissioning steam unit of the power plant, its production capacity will hit 484 megawatts, showing a considerable growth.

With launching steam unit of the power plant, moreover increasing nominal production capacity of electricity, it will boost performance of electricity grid in the region and also increase power generation in the network significantly.

Considering the high capacities available in the city, it is expected that launch of this unit will generate more employment opportunities in the region.

Generally speaking, launch of steam unit to the power generation network will help reduce environmental pollution and also increase output and efficiency of the power plant.
