TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian and Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida al-Kaabi held an online meeting to discuss linking the two countries’ electricity grids via the sea.

During the online meeting, the two sides also discussed a regional initiative for developing cooperation in the field of unconventional water resources, including seawater desalination and the use of treated wastewater, according to news.moe.gov.ir.

Connecting the two countries’ electricity networks was discussed and approved at a recent meeting of the Regional Centre on Urban Water Management (RCUWM), hosted by Tehran.

In this regard, Al-Kaabi announced his country’s readiness for participating in this initiative and suggested that regular meetings would be held in the region’s countries so that experts could exchange information on related projects.

Further in the meeting, Ardakanian, who is also the head of the two countries’ joint economic committee, referred to the continuous exchange of electricity between Iran and its neighbors, saying that Qatar, at some points, has surplus electricity generation, which can be swapped with countries in the region, such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq, through Iran.

Mentioning the possibility of linking the two countries’ electricity networks, Al-Kaabi said electricity transfer between the two countries is possible and this proposal should be worked on.

In my opinion, this idea is practical, and it is possible to implement it, he said.

“Regarding cooperation in energy and water, good areas of cooperation can be defined, with the presence of the private sector of the two countries,” the minister added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian said the country’s electricity network will soon be linked to Russia and Azerbaijan in a couple of months once the synchronization studies are completed.

Ardakanian said that the Iranian electricity grid could synchronize to other grids either through Azerbaijan or Armenia and Georgia, Fars News Agency reported on Friday.

“Iran welcomes either of the two routes which gets ready first,” the minister said, adding that the three countries have agreed on a single company to conduct the project in the Iran-Azerbaijan-Russia route.

He went on to say that the company has already started work on the project.

Ardakanian termed the project “a necessary one,” which is highly demanded by the three countries.

On Tuesday, Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali and Russian Deputy Energy Minister Anatoly Tikhonov underlined the necessity for strengthening cooperation between the two energy kingpins.

Jalali and Tikhonov conferred on the trend of mutual energy cooperation with a focus on removing obstacles in the way of expansion of cooperation.

The Iranian ambassador expressed hope that the measures taken would help the two nations boost trade between Tehran and Moscow.

Tikhonov, for his part, underscored the need to implement joint projects in a bid to develop economic cooperation between the two countries.

Iran’s electricity exports to its neighbors have been witnessing an upward trend in recent years.

The country has exchanged electricity with most of its neighbors, namely Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Iraq, as well as the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic, among which Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan have been solely importers of Iran’s electricity.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian said his ministry plans to connect the Iran’s power grids to Syria through Iraq as Tehran and Damascus signed a preliminary agreement in this regard.

Speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Iranian Energy Ministry and the Syrian Electricity Ministry in Tehran on Saturday, Ardakanian pointed to the synchronization of the power grids of Iran and Iraq on Friday and said, “We intend to use the existing infrastructure to connect the Iran-Syria power grids via Iraq.”

The Iranian minister added that in the near future, the electricity transmission between Iran and Syria would become possible via Iraq.

“We plan to create the necessary infrastructure for the implementation of this program within the next three years so that we witness the synchronization of the power grids of Iran and Syria,” he added.

The power grids of Iran and Iraq were synchronized in a ceremony held on Friday attended by Ardakanian and the Iraqi deputy minister of electricity.

Earlier this year, the two countries had reached an agreement to connect their power grids by the end of 2019.

Speaking to Tasnim, Iranian Deputy Energy Minister Homayoun Ha’eri said with the synchronization of the national grids, the two countries would witness the increase of electricity exchanges.

According to Ardakanian, Iran’s exports of electricity to neighboring states, particularly to Iraq, reached a record high last year.

Ardakanian and his Iraqi counterpart Luay al-Khatteeb signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and a contract in February to boost cooperation between the two countries in the electricity industry.

On October 16, a US State Department spokesman said Washington has once again exempted Iraq from its sanctions against Iran, allowing the Arab country to continue gas and electricity imports from the Islamic Republic for another four-month period.

Power cuts in Iraq have often prompted protests against the authorities. Iran supplies enough gas to power 2,500 megawatts (MW), as well as providing Iraq with 1,200 MW in direct power supplies, according to media reports.

During a Monday meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Mehdi Honardoost in Islamabad, Ayub Khan said that Pakistan is ready to hold negotiations on the renewal of the agreement on100MW electricity import to Balochistan province.

The two sides stressed the need to continue joint efforts in the power sector on both power generation and transmission.

Honardoost, for his part, noted that Iranian companies and contractors are ready to take part in the neighboring country’s power sector.

Pakistan has been importing electricity from Iran for over a decade to meet the demand of the border areas of Balochistan province.

The first power transmission agreement between Pakistan and Iran was signed in 2002 under which the Islamic Republic was obliged to send 34MW of electricity to the neighboring country. The deal was upgraded to 73MW later and finally reached 100MW months ago.

Last year, Iran expressed readiness to provide up to 3,000 MW electricity to Pakistan.

However, according to Ayub Khan, there is a problem on Pakistan side because importing such quantity of electricity requires a robust transmission system, which requires a lot of investment.
