TEHRAN (Iran News) –The loading and unloading of goods in the ports of Iran increased by three percent in the first six months of the present Iranian calendar year (March 21-September 22), as compared to the same period of time in the past year.

As the country’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) reported, 111,806,313 tons of commodities were loaded and unloaded in the ports in the first half of the current Iranian year.

Of the mentioned figure, 74,415,327 tons were related to loading, and 37,392,654 tons were related to unloading.

The loading of goods in the mentioned period also increased by nine percent as compared to the figure for the previous year’s same six months.

During the said period, loading and unloading operations in the container sector reached 1,432,672 TEUs, which was five percent more than the 1,284,604 TEUs in the first six months of the past year.

While Iran is combating the U.S. unilateral sanctions on its economy, the country’s ports as the major gates of exports and imports play a significant role in this battle. This role makes all-out support to ports and more development of them serious and vital.

Such necessity has led the government to define projects for more development of the ports and also take some measures to encourage investment making in ports, in addition to facilitating the loading and unloading of goods, especially basic commodities, there.

It is worth mentioning that Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization has defined a high number of projects to develop and improve the country’s ports, as the country aims to double the capacity of its ports in the course of five years.

According to the PMO, the capacity of the country’s ports has increased from 180 million tons in the Iranian calendar year 1392 (ended in March 2014) to 250 million tons in 1399 (ended in March 2021).

TEHRAN (Iran News) –In a press conference on Saturday, Ali-Akbar Safaei, the head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), underlined the significant growth of transit of commodities via the ports of country and said that transit via some ports has risen by 150-170 percent in this year.

During the conference, which was on the occasion of World Maritime Day, the official said that the PMO has held many sessions with the neighboring countries as well as India and took many follow-up measures to facilitate trade with those countries which has also led to the rising trend of transit via Iran.

According to a report released during the press conference, the loading and unloading of goods in the ports of the country has risen 4.8 percent during the first half of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-September 22), as compared to the same period of time in the past year.

Based on the mentioned report, 109.733 million tons of goods were loaded and unloaded in the ports of Iran during the first half of this year, while the figure was 104.698 million tons in the first half of the previous year.

As reported, loading and unloading of non-oil products stood at 54.777 million tons in the six-month of this year, up 0.8 percent from 54.366 million tons in the same time span of the previous year.

In terms of oil products, this year’s figure was 54.955 million tons, rising 9.2 percent from 50.331 million tons in the past year.

For the container sector, a growth of 8.2 percent was achieved, as 1.273 million TEUs were loaded and unloaded in the first half of this year, while the figure was 1.176 million TEUs in the first half of the past year.

Infrastructure development being highly paid attention

Elsewhere in his remarks, the PMO head said that his organization is paying serious attention to the development of infrastructure in the ports as well as the development of human resources.

“We have defined projects worth 69 trillion rials (about $250 million) from the PMO’s budget for the establishment of proper infrastructure in the ports which will worth 100 trillion rials (about $350 million)”, the official stated.

He also announced that 33.5 trillion rials (about $120 million) of investment has been attracted since the year start.

Safaei also mentioned the PMO’s supporting the knowledge-based companies and said that these companies have managed to achieve the technical knowledge for the domestic manufacturing of 768 types of marine and port equipment.

Among the outstanding measures recently taken by the PMO, the head of organization also referred to launching a liner between the ports of Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia for the first time and said that 20 vessels are operating in this line.

PMO’s major measures in line with World Maritime Day’s motto

The head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization further referred to the motto of this year’s World Maritime Day, which is New Technologies for Greener Shipping, and mentioned three major actions of his organization in line with this motto as:

– Preserving the environment through producing low-sulfur fuel

– Instruction for scrapping the vessels

– Using new energies such as wind and wave

He also referred to the active presence of Iran in the sessions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and said that the representatives of our country have always played effective roles in the decisions made in these meetings.

Addressing the same press conference, which was also attended by the PMO deputies, Jalili Eslami, the deputy for ports affairs, put the current capacity of the country’s ports at over 270 million tons and said that the figure is planned to reach about 300 million tons by the Iranian calendar year 1404 (begins in March 2025).

While Iran is combating the U.S. unilateral sanctions on its economy, the country’s ports as the major gates of exports and imports play a significant role in this battle. This role makes all-out support to ports and more development of them serious and vital.

Such necessity has led the government to define projects for more development of the ports and also take some measures to encourage investment making in ports, in addition to facilitating loading and unloading of goods, especially basic commodities, there.

He added that fortunately the Omani government is studying the assessment of Iranian ships in Oman’s ports and in case it is approved, it can have positive effect on expansion of economic exchanges between the two countries and on using the advantages of free zones for bilateral trade.

He expressed hope holding such events would present practical solutions for expansion of trade between the two countries.

Meanwhile addressing the event, Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) Mr. Reza bin al-Saleh pointed to the trade volume of Iran and Oman and said the figure stood around $400m last year, adding that Oman is trying to expand its ties with Iran in all spheres and for this reason the country has signed MoUs with Iran in different fields like air transportation. He added that holding this virtual event is in line with developing relations in all fields.

Saleh then said Oman has encouraged Iranian economic activists to enter its market and it tries to create a good and diverse climate economically for the private sector for sharing experiences. He reiterated that Oman welcomes the presence of Iranian investors for investment in Oman and implementing the joint project because Oman seeks growth in economic relations and foreign investment and therefore it welcomes any investment.

He added that Oman is keen for cooperation and foreign investment in the fields of mines, paper industry, chemicals, metal and non-metal industries, transportation, recycling and construction materials.

Then Chairman of Iran-Oman Joint Chamber Mohsen Zarrabi pointed to the good and amicable ties between the two states and said the pandemic made Iran and Oman hold this virtual exhibition.

He said Oman’s imports last year stood at $24b while Iran’s share of this figure was $438m, just 1.8 percent of the total imports.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Loading and unloading of goods in the ports of Iran rose 14 percent during the first five months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-August 22), as compared to the same period of the previous year, the portal of the Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) reported.

According to PMO’s Ports Affairs Director Ravanbakhsh Behzadian, loading and unloading of goods at the country’s commercial ports reached 58.99 million tons in the mentioned period, while the figure stood at 51.73 million tons in the past year’s same five months.

During the said five months, unloading and loading operations in the container sector reached 8.66 million tons, for dry bulk the figure stood at 17.77 million tons, in liquid bulk the figure was 1.94 million tons, while for general cargo (general and miscellaneous goods) it was 8.37 million tons and for the petroleum products loading and unloading volume amounted to 22.24 million tons, Behzadian said.

He noted that the loading and unloading operations in the dry bulk sector grew by six percent in the mentioned period compared to the last year’s same time span, while in the liquid bulk sector the figure increased by 47.9 percent, in the general cargo sector the growth was 19.4 Percent and the petroleum sector also experienced a growth of 22.6 percent compared to the same period last year.

While Iran is combating the U.S. unilateral sanctions on its economy, the country’s ports as the major gates of exports and imports play some significant role in this battle. This role makes all-out support to ports and more development of them serious and vital.

Such necessity has led the government to define projects for more development of the ports and also take some measures to encourage investment making in ports, in addition, to facilitate loading and unloading of goods, especially basic commodities, there.

It is worth mentioning that PMO has defined a high number of projects to develop and improve the country’s ports, as the country aims to double the capacity of its ports in a course of five years.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – 16 major projects soon to be inaugurated in Iranian ports. Head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) has announced that 16 major projects worth over $267 million are going to be inaugurated in the country’s ports by the end of the current week, IRNA reported.

According to Mohammad Rastad, some 6.876 trillion rials (about $163 million) plus 87.9 million euros has been invested in the said projects, of which about 382 billion rials (about $9.05 million) has been provided by the private sector.

Of these 16 projects, two projects have been carried out by the private sector investors in Imam Khomeini port and other projects have been implemented by the Ports and Maritime Organization, the official explained.

“These projects are in various fields including infrastructure, buildings, vessels, port equipment, maritime safety, port security, maritime transport facilitation, and maritime reference buildings,” he added.

According to Rastad, the mentioned projects are located in Hormozgan, Khuzestan, Bushehr, and Mazandaran provinces.

Six of the projects will be inaugurated in Hormozgan Province, including a wharf post, three oil wharf posts, a vessel, a hyper-suction dredger vessel, a marine reference building, and a fire alarm system.

Projects in Khuzestan province also include multi-purpose warehouses for storage of goods, a hyper-suction dredger vessel.

A 60-ton mobile crane, a sailors club building (in Amirabad), a fire station, a corn flour and concentrate factory, and a CCTV and electronic protection system are among the projects that will be inaugurated in Mazandaran Province, according to Rastad.

Iranian Transport Ministry has been taking serious measures for supporting development projects in the country’s ports and in this regard the ministry has been cooperating with domestic companies for supplying the equipment and machinery needed in such projects.

Earlier this year, Transport Minister Mohammad Eslami had announced that the capacity of the country’s commercial ports is going to be increased to 500 million tons over the next five years, to make Iran one of the biggest trade hubs in the region.

Also in April, Rastad said that his organization plans to take all the necessary measures for supporting the companies active in various maritime sectors during the current Iranian calendar year (began on March 21).

“In line with the current year’s motto which is “Production: support and the elimination of obstacles”, PMO has put it on the agenda to provide necessary supports for producers in order to facilitate the process of import and export of goods in the country’s ports,” Rastad said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Seyyed Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said his country does not consider Chabahar and Gwadar ports as competitors, and asserted that linking the two ports will bring regional prosperity and boost bilateral trade between the two countries.

The ambassador told Business Recorder on Friday that Pakistan’s Gwadar and Iran’s Chabahar are two important ports, adding that if they become more active, the two ports will bring regional progress and prosperity.

He said Pakistan was working on the infrastructure of Gwadar port to boost economic activity, while Iran had also specific programs to make Chabahar port more active.

“Some are trying to present these two ports as competitors to each other, while we do not take it as a competition but a compliment to each other,” he asserted, adding that the potential of the two ports could be utilized better by connectivity through rail.

He said Iran had announced its readiness to provide electricity for Gwadar port.

“We believe that further progress of these ports will bring prosperity in the region and the trade volume will also increase automatically. In fact, we see the progress and security of Pakistan as the progress and security of Iran,” the Iranian envoy said.

He said that the people of the two countries, especially at the border, can benefit from trade activity.

At present, he said the trade volume between Pakistan and Iran was $1.3 billion, but due to COVID-19, the volume went down as the pandemic has badly affected the overall economic situation across the world.

In view of existing potentials, he added that the two-way trade could be increased even further. Due to COVID-19, the border between the two countries is closed; there has been the closure of transportation and transit between two countries.

“While the problem has been resolved, I hope that with cooperation and participation by the two countries, routine business at the border will resume and we will witness a re-growth in trade cooperation,” he added.

He identified various fields for investment between the two countries, such as energy, gas, electricity and oil, adding, that Iran had a very good potential in the energy sector. “We can have significant amount of exports in these areas to Pakistan,” he added.

Regarding the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, the Iranian envoy said the IP gas pipeline project was signed between Iran and Pakistan in 2009, adding that Iran had undertaken its part of work despite illegal US sanctions and other economic pressures and constraints.

“We are looking forward towards Pakistan to fulfill their commitment in this regard. If we can execute this investment project, there are a lot of other fields in which we can have growth,” he added.

At the moment, he said Iran was exporting a small amount of electricity to Pakistan, adding that his country had already announced its readiness to export more electricity to Pakistan.

In other fields such as tourism, health and pilgrimage, he said that the two sides could have the investment to increase the number of traveling passengers to both countries.

“The future of Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations is very bright as the motive and resolve of the leadership along with the interest of the people of these countries is that they should boost their relationship in various fields despite the enemies and ill-wishers,” he said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The eighth Indian vessel carrying wheat cargo to Afghanistan has been berthed at Chabahar’s Shahid Beheshti Port, southeastern Iran, said the managing director of Sistan and Balouchestan Ports and Maritime Organization said.

Having a capacity of 351 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the vessel is loaded with 8,097 tons of wheat, added Behrouz Aqaei, according to Fars News Agency.

He noted that the cargo will soon be transferred to Afghanistan via a land border crossing.

“The shipment is part of India’s new round of humanitarian aid, weighing a total of 75,000 tons, to Afghanistan,” the official added.

Aqaei said the Iranian port has handled over 53,000 tons of India’s wheat cargoes destined for Afghanistan since the beginning of the current calendar year (March 20).

On August 5, the official announced that Iran signed an MoU with Afghanistan’s private sector on goods transit via the Chabahar port.

He added given the good neighborliness between the two countries, the MoU was signed to develop the Afghan private sector’s transit and investment activities in the fields of transportation, attraction of investors and logistics within the framework of Iran’s rules and regulations.

Under the MoU, the Afghan private sector has been assigned to transfer the country’s goods to target markets via Shahid Beheshti Port, the official noted.

Transit cooperation between the Chabahar port and Afghanistan has been expanded significantly in recent years, he said.

Aqaei added four ships carrying Afghanistan’s cargoes, including nuts, were earlier sent to India and China via Shahid Beheshti Port.

The strategic port of Chabahar is the only oceanic port on the Makran coast in southeastern Iran and has a special status in the country’s economic affairs.

Chabahar has two separate ports named Shahid Kalantari and Shahid Beheshti, each having five berths.

Iran has handed over the development project of this port to India, which has allocated $500 million to build two new berths in this port.

India has doubled the fund allocated for the development of the port in its national budget bill for 2020.
