According to earlier reports, having Negin port project implemented, the container loading and unloading capacity for Bushehr Port will be increased up to 600,000 TEUs.

This is twice its current capacity, making it the country’s second biggest container port after Shahid Rajaee Port in Hormozgan Province, reports say.

In an official visit to the southern province of Bushehr, President Hassan Rouhani in January 2015 launched the construction of Negin Island seaport, as part of the Bushehr Port development project.

The port is constructed on 200 hectares of the island’s 470-hectare area.

According to the official, some 24 ships, with 730,000 tons of different essential commodities, have been unloaded in Shahid Rajaei Port in the past 80 days.

Afifipour said the port is operating round the clock in a bid to handle the considerable bulk of cargo ships docking at its wharves.

Located along the Persian Gulf and near the Strait of Hormoz, Shahid Rajaei Port is Iran’s biggest container hub, handling almost 80% of the country’s container activities.

The strategic port can accommodate Panamax cargo ships with a capacity of more than 12,000 TEU. The port’s capacity is envisaged to increase to 8 million TEU when the construction operations are complete.

Lying along the Sea of Oman, Chabahar is considered as a gateway to golden opportunities for trade, especially by India, Iran and Afghanistan with Central Asian countries.

According to Hossein Shahdadi, the deputy head of Sistan and Baluchestan province’s Ports and Maritime Department, Chabahar’s throughput has during the first two months of current fiscal (March 21-May 21) rose 30% compared to the same period of the past year.

The official added that Chabahar is now ready for on-time unloading of essential goods required inside the country.

He further underlined the port’s various advantages for exports and imports as well as transit of commodities.

Last November, the United States announced that it would grant a sanctions waiver for the Iranian-Indian port project at Chabahar. The exemption from the new round of the US sanctions is an opportunity for the development of transit via this port, Shahdadi noted.

Some exports and imports of non-oil goods through the ports amounted to 117,000 tons during the period, showing a growth of 28%, the official added.

He also noted that Lengeh Port and its subsidiaries have a well-developed infrastructure for the export of various types of goods, including construction materials, refrigerated containers and mineral shipments, ready to serve traders and investors in this region.

Askari Nasab added that the recorded volume of non-oil imports in west Hormozgan is 1,804 tons, indicating that the figure fell 67% compared to the same period last year.

During the mentioned period, the volume of non-oil goods transit (mostly cars) reached 24,603 tons, which represents a 30% growth compared to the same period last year.

The measures include the preparation of hydrographic maps of the ports and doing dredging, he noted.

“One of the other tasks to increase maritime safety, which has been done by the Ports and Maritime Organization, also the establishment of navigational assistance symbols in the ports of and waterways.”

Another step taken to ensure maritime safety was creating a naval rescue fleet, Rastad added.

“According to the Marine Search and Rescue Operations Scheme, the Ports Organization Fleet will be stationed in different parts of the North and South coasts and the Marine search and rescue coordination centers are required to plan and act in response to emergency situations at sea.”

He went on to say that “to ensure the safety of sailing, continuous technical inspections and safety of ships and vessels are on the agenda of the Ports and Maritime Organization.”

The PMO chief added that “one of the tasks of the Organization`s inspection and control officers is to ensure that the vessels that enter into the ports of the country have the necessary safety standards and, prevent them from entering if the ship or flotation does not meet the required standards.”

The incident had no casualties, but three crew member were reported to have sustained injury. There were 14 crew members on board, all of whom of foreign nationalities, according to Director General of Ports and Maritime of Hormozgan, Afifipour, who was speaking to MNA correspondent a few hours after the incident.

The cargo ship was carrying 153 containers of Iran’s mineral and industrial goods, including potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, copper concentrate, industrial oil, and regulators. The ship was also carrying two containers of pistachios.

According to an official, the capsizing may be the result of lack of coordination between the ship’s officer and the contractor for loading and unloading.

Meanwhile, Afifipour told MNA that the causes of the accident are being investigated by a team of experts from the coastal disasters reconnaissance committee.

Operations to rescue the containers are underway.
