Managing Director of Iran’s Port and Maritime Organization Mohammad Rastad underlined on Monday the strategic position of Mokran coast, along the Sea of Oman, saying, the new port will be established to increase Iran’s marine traffic in international waters and the oceans.

“Mokran coastline can play a special role in the future of marine exchanges,” Mohammad Rastad said.

Mokran is a semi-desert coastal strip in the South of Sistan and Baluchestan, in Pakistan and Iran, along the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Noting that the Iranian ports have an aggregate capacity to handle 246 million tons of goods per year, the PMO head said, the figure is projected to rise to 286 million tons by the end of the Sixth Five-Year Development Plan (2017-22).

Rastad added, “PMO plans to build 83 new cargo vessels to join the country’s cargo fleet.”

“One of the major activities of the PMO is that 83 vessels needed in the ports will be built by the domestic manufacturers with an estimated investment of 240 million euros,” he said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Cargo transit will begin as of Saturday between the southern port city of Bandar Abbas in Iran and Port Sultan Qaboos in Oman through a new container line.

The head of the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran (TPO), Hamid Zadboum, added the container line will be used for the transit of fruit and vegetables to Oman at competitive prices, IRNA reported.

Commenting on the coronavirus spread in Iran, he noted that despite the problems the outbreak of the virus has created for the Islamic Republic’s foreign commerce, it has not been able to impede Iran’s smart trade with other countries.

The TPO head gave the assurance that Iran’s economy will resolve the coronavirus crisis as, over the past years, it has managed to overcome the cruel sanctions on the country.

Concurrent with the coronavirus spread in the country, monitoring of the common borders started on a daily basis through the country’s embassies and [commercial] attachés in neighboring states, and Iranian traders were provided with required information through an online app as well as Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA).

In addition to the threats the coronavirus spread has posed to Iran’s economy and foreign trade, it has also provided the country with a brilliant opportunity to expand exports in different sectors, including that of services, Zadboum said.

He noted, “No doubt our plans have been impacted by the coronavirus contagion and [US] sanctions. However, we must prevent serious harm to the country’s production and exports and make use of the current situations in regional and neighboring states to boost our overseas sales.”

In May 2018, President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), ‎signed between Iran and the P5+1 in July 2015, and reimposed Washington’s unilateral sanctions on ‎Tehran. The sanctions target mainly Iran’s oil and banking sectors.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have stressed the strategic importance of developing Chabahar Port for expansion of economic and regional cooperation.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in east China’s coastal city of Qingdao on Sunday.

President Rouhani said Iran welcomes expansion of all-out relations with India as friendly country in the region, voicing readiness to develop strategic cooperation with the South Asian country.

Rouhani also welcomed India’s active participation in the development project of the port of Chabahar, adding “Chabahar Port can serve as India’s linking bridge to Afghanistan, Central Asia and Eastern Europe, further contributing to the cementing of historical and trade ties between Tehran and New Delhi.”

On 9 June, officials at Indian Shipping Ministry announced that they will start interim development operations of Chabahar Port in Iran by June 13 despite US pullout from JCPOA and the reinstatement of sanctions. Tehran plans to use Chabahar for transshipment to Afghanistan and Central Asia. The Iranian port also provides India with an easier land-sea route to Afghanistan.

The Indian prime minister, for his part, noted a tangible hike in development of ties between Tehran and New Delhi, voicing his country’s resolve to continue expanding cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.

He also highlighted the special status of Chabahar Port in boosting regional cooperation.
