TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman denounced the rocket attack on the US embassy in Baghdad, noting that, however, the timing of the attack and the US’ immediate claims seems suspicious.“Attacking diplomatic and residential premises is not acceptable, but the type of attack and its timing and the statement issued by the US Secretary of State show that the timing is very suspicious and they had already prepared a statement to publish,” Saeed Khatibzadeh said during his weekly presser on Monday.

The rockets, which were fired late on Sunday, landed close to the US diplomatic mission, causing sirens blaring within the compound without any casualties apart from some material damage. The rockets reportedly hit a residential complex inside the Green Zone, damaging buildings and cars, but causing no casualties.

Immediately after the rocket launch, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo used the opportunity to accuse Iran of being behind the attack by a statement published in the press service of the US State Department and also in a later tweet.

“Iran-backed militias once again flagrantly and recklessly attacked in Baghdad, wounding Iraqi civilians,” he claimed in a tweet, adding that “The people of Iraq deserve to have these attackers prosecuted. These violent and corrupt criminals must cease their destabilizing actions.”

Pompeo’s claims about civilian casualties come as Saberin News reported that the defense systems of the US embassy has inflicted damage on residential areas of the Green Zone.

Iran rejects Pompeo’s claim on its economy

Foreign Ministry has rejected US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s claim on the status of the country’s economy, saying Iran’s economy has kept an over 8% growth throughout all the years fighting terrorism in the region.

In a statement on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi reacted to the claim made by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that Iran’s economy is in decline due to its presence in the region, adding “such remarks are merely made out of a populist agenda and are a blatant fallacy. Fighting terrorism in the region and protecting peace, stability and security on our borders have rendered the US’ anti-Iranian plots ineffective, and this has caused them much concern.”

Iran’s economy has kept an over 8 percent growth throughout the years of fighting terrorism in the region, he added.

Ghasemi then condemned US authorities for using the ‘economic terrorism’ tool and imposing unjust and unlawful sanctions against Iran despite global objections in a bid to cover up its own crimes committed against the people of Iran and the Middle East region.

The Iranian diplomat further maintained that the US approach is of the same kind of strategic mistakes that the country has been repeatedly making for the past forty years.
