Iran, UN Stress Talks to End Syrian Crisis

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior official at Iran’s Foreign Ministry and UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Otto Pedersen in a phone call on Saturday emphasized the need to end Syrian crisis through political talks.

Iranian Foreign Minister’s Senior Assistant for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji and Pedersen further stressed the need for continuation of constitutional committee’s activities to achieve a final solution to the Syrian crisis, IRNA reported.

They underlined reaching a final solution to the Syrian crisis within the framework of respecting Syrian national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Pederson had exchanged views on issues related to Syria’s Constitutional Committee, situation in Idlib, and the humanitarian conditions in the war-torn Arab country in another telephone conversation with Khaji earlier this month.

During their first conversation, the two sides reiterated their supports for the promotion of political trend and continuation of the work by the Syrian Constitutional Committee to put an end to the Syrian crisis.

Given the difficult humanitarian conditions, especially during the coronavirus outbreak, Pederson and Khaji called for help by the international community for the Syrian people.

Khaji underlined the need for the implementation of Idlib agreements in line with tranquility and preventing the re-emergence of the tensions.

26th round of Iran-Japan political talks held in Tehran

According to a statement issued by Iranian Foreign Ministry on Saturday, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Takeo Mori and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi have held the 26th round of Iran-Japan political negotiations.

In the meeting, the two sides had plain talks about bilateral relations, the ways to expand the ties, the developments in relation to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as well as the situation in the Persian Gulf region and the West Asia.

The two deputy ministers also highlighted the significance of Japanese Prime Minister Abe’s recent visit to Tehran, and expressed willingness to continue high-profile political consultations.

The Japanese delegation has earlier held a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Saturday.

Iran’s new envoy submits credentials to Cuban president

During the meeting, held at the headquarters of the Council of State, in Havana, Bayat Mokhtari conveyed greetings of Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani and hailed the developing ties between the two countries.

He expressed his satisfaction with the mission assigned to him and his high motivation to contribute to the promotion of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Iranian ambassador also expressed to the Cuban leader the condemnation of his government to the application of chapter III of the Helms-Burton Act, an instrument with which the United States pursues the economic suffocation of Cuba.

This year, Cuba and Iran will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the restoration of their diplomatic relations, which have been experiencing permanent development both in the political sphere and in economic sectors.

Russian Defense Ministry delegation arrives in Iran

A delegation from the Russian Defense Ministry has arrived in Iran for a session of the bilateral group for military cooperation, the Russian ministry press service said on Monday.

“On December 24, a delegation of the Russian Defense Ministry led by the deputy chief of the Russian Army General Staff, Vice-Admiral Igor Osipov, arrived in the Islamic Republic of Iran to take part in a second session of the Russian-Iranian working group for the implementation of a bilateral agreement on military cooperation,” TASS quoted the Russian ministry as saying.

The agreement was signed in January 2015. It was inked by Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Dehghan. The Russian minister said back then that the agreement had laid “the theoretical groundwork for military cooperation”.

He said an agreement had been reached at the talks to give a practical trajectory to bilateral cooperation and to see it help enhance the combat effectiveness of the Russian and Iranian armies.
