TEHRAN (Iran News) – An unarmed Black man was shot by a Virginia sheriff’s deputy who mistook his cordless house phone for a gun, according to authorities who late on Friday released the body camera footage of the incident.

Isaiah Brown, 32, called 911 over a dispute with his brother. The same deputy, who gave him a ride home after his car had broken down, responded to the call made on Wednesday.

Brown was holding the cordless house phone when he was shot by the deputy six times in the abdomen, according to authorities and the footage.

He called 911 to say his brother would not allow him to enter into his mother’s room to retrieve his car keys, according to the audio recording. Brown then says he will kill his brother.

Several minutes into the call, he says he is walking down the road with his house phone, but adds he does not have a gun.

However, in the recordings of the incident, the deputy states that Brown has a “gun to his head.” The deputy demands to see Brown’s hands and drop the gun.

The officer then screams “stop!, stop!” before opening fire. After the shots, the deputy again asks Brown to show his hands and drop the gun.

The officer then begins to perform “live saving measures” on the black man, seen in the video lying in the street.

A spokesperson for the Virginia State Police told CNN that Brown was unarmed at the time of the incident.

“After viewing the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s deputy’s bodycam video and listening to the 911 call, it is evident that the tragic shooting of Isaiah Brown was completely avoidable,” David Haynes, an attorney for Brown’s family, said in a statement.

“The deputy in question made multiple, basic policing errors and violated established protocols,” Haynes said. “The deputy was situated nearly 50 feet from Isaiah, was never threatened and should not have discharged his weapon.”

“Isaiah is now fighting for his life as a result of these completely avoidable errors by the deputy and dispatch,” Haynes said.

The shooting of Brown comes at a time when law enforcement agencies are under increased scrutiny following fatal shootings of African Americans, including 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant in Columbus, Ohio, and Andrew Brown Jr. in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.Fatal attacks on people of color in the US have witnessed a disconcerting surge in recent years, which activists have attributed to former president Donald Trump’s racist rhetoric.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Black teen girl fatally shot by Ohio police minutes before Floyd trial verdict. A Black teenage girl was fatally shot by police in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday afternoon, shortly before a US jury found former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin guilty of third-degree murder in the May 2020 death of George Floyd.

The shooting was confirmed on Twitter by the city’s mayor, Andrew Ginther, who said there was police body camera footage of the incident, calling on residents to remain calm as protesters descended on the scene.

“This afternoon a young woman tragically lost her life,” he said. “It’s a tragic day in the city of Columbus. A horrible, heartbreaking situation. I’m not just the mayor, I’m a father. The city of Columbus lost a 15-year-old girl today.”

He went on to say that “we do not know all of the details. There is body-worn camera footage of the incident. We are working to review it as soon as possible.”

Officers were responding to a call about an attempted stabbing when the shooting happened around 4:45 pm in the southeastern part of Columbus, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

The verdict in the Chauvin case was announced in Hennepin County court about 20 minutes later.

“It is clear the officer took action to protect another young life,” Ginther said.

Following the shooting, the girl, identified by her family as Ma’Khia Bryant, was taken to Mount Carmel East in critical condition where she was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, Public Safety Director Ned Pettus said the death of Bryant is “devastating.”

“She could be my grandchild,” Pettus said. “My heart breaks for the family tonight. No matter what the circumstances, that family is in agony and they are in my prayers.”

The Dispatch interviewed a woman who identified the victim as her niece. The woman, Hazel Bryant, told the newspaper Ma’Khia got into an altercation with someone else at the home.

She said her niece had a knife, but noted the teen had dropped the knife before the officer shot her multiple times, the newspaper reported.

Paula Bryant, the girl’s mother, and another family member said the teen called the police for help because girls were fighting outside of her house.

The incident quickly received widespread attention, including from Ben Crump, the Floyd family’s lawyer, who said, “Another child lost! Another hashtag.”

“As we breathed a collective sigh of relief today, a community in Columbus felt the sting of another police shooting as @ColumbusPolice killed an unarmed 15yo Black girl,” Crump said.

The incident comes more than a week after Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old African American, was shot and killed by a single bullet fired by a White police officer in the city suburb of Brooklyn Center.

Fatal attacks on people of color in the US have witnessed a disconcerting surge in recent years, which activists have attributed to former president Donald Trump’s racist rhetoric.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Several police cars were damaged, including at least one set on fire, as protests continued Saturday over the death of George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes.

Officers struck multiple demonstrators with batons amid the protest near the Trump Tower on the city’s Near North Side, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Video sent out by another local reporter also showed police in tactical gear walking on a downtown street.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced a 9 p.m. curfew that runs until 6 a.m. Sunday.

Lightfoot condemned Floyd’s death during a Saturday night news conference and defended the idea of demonstrating to honor him. But she added that a peaceful protest has “devolved into criminal conduct” and police will be aggressive with arrests for anyone caught damaging property.

“When you or anyone else behaves in this way, we all lose by giving the very same forces of oppression we are fighting against the false validation that they crave,” the mayor said, AP reported.

The crowd of thousands converged on Chicago’s Loop for Saturday’s protest march. The demonstration began at 2 p.m. and protesters began marching north about 90 minutes later, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Saturday’s demonstration came after Chicago officials, following overnight clashes with protesters, asked that additional protests remain peaceful. Demonstrations are expected throughout the weekend over Floyd’s death.

Chicago police Superintendent David Brown said peaceful protests that began Friday afternoon turned more confrontational as the night wore on, resulting in 108 arrests. Protesters blocked traffic along major streets, threw bottles and other objects at police vehicles, and shattered the windows of downtown businesses.

About a dozen squad cars were damaged and some officers suffered minor injuries, including a broken wrist.

The violence in Chicago and many other cities were sparked by anger over Floyd’s death in Minneapolis on Monday, which was captured on cellphone video. It led to the firing Tuesday of the four police officers who was arresting Floyd for suspicion of passing a counterfeit bill and to third-degree murder and manslaughter charges being filed Friday against the officer who used his knee to pin Floyd down for more than eight minutes, even as Floyd pleaded for air and went limp.
