Several pilgrims visiting Shah Cheragh, the shrine of Ahmad ibn Musa (AS) in the southern Iranian city, were killed in the attack carried out by ISIS last October.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Ali Ramezani, the director of the Iran Book and Literature House, an organizer of the festival, expressed his happiness over the choice of Shiraz to host the event.

“We initiated the festival in a city that has moved to center stage in the country due to the terrorist attack and now it is a place where the country’s poetic saplings will sprout,” he said.

He called poetry the major part of Iranians’ identity and said, “What encouraged us to select Shiraz to host the festival is the potential people in the Fars region have for poetry and literature.”

Ramezani expressed his hope the festival could help uncover people’s untold stories and bring unity back to the society.

Fars governor-general deputy in political, security and social issues Esmaeil Mohebbipur also attended the opening ceremony of the festival.

In a short speech, he said that different issues of the present time and the future are reflected by literati in literature and poetry, and added the country needs a future full of hope and happiness in order to progress.

Fars Culture and Islamic Guidance Department director Hamidreza Qanei also delivered a speech.

He said that Shiraz is mostly famous for being the homes of renowned poets such as Sadi and Hafez, and expressed his hope that selecting Shiraz as the host city would produce good outcomes for the event.

Ahad Dehbozorgi, Mahmud Ekramifard, Reza Esmaeili, Gholamreza Kafi and several other poets recited their latest works at the opening ceremony, which ended with unveiling a poster for the festival.

Poets from across the country will present their compositions produced over the past year at the festival.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – April 13 is considered a significant cultural event for Iranians to commemorate the great Persian poet, mystic, and philosopher Attar of Nishapur.

Abu Hamid bin Abu Bakr Ibrahim, also known as Farid ud-Din was born in the city of Nishpur (Neyshabur) located in the north-east of Iran. It is believed that he lived between c. 1145 – c. 1221.

Attar means ‘apothecary’ and this nickname was given to him due to his profession. He was probably the son of a prosperous chemist, receiving an excellent education in various fields. He practiced the profession of pharmacy. The people he helped in the pharmacy used to confide their troubles in `Attar and this affected him deeply.

Eventually, he abandoned his pharmacy store and traveled extensively, seeking wisdom in Baghdad, Basra, Kufa, Mecca, Medina, Damascus, Khwarizm, Turkistan, and India, before finally returning to his birthplace Nishapur.

Attar is one of the most famous mystic poets of Iran. His works were the inspiration of Rumi, Hafiz, Jami, Nava’i and many other mystic poets.

Ilahi-Nama, Mukhtar-Nama, Musibat-Nama, Jawahir-Nama, Sarh al-Qalb, Divan, Tadhkirat-ul-Awliya (Memorial of the Saints) and Manṭiq-uṭ-Ṭayr (The Conference of the Birds) are among his major works.

Considered by Rumi to be “the master” of mystic poetry, Attar is best known for ‘The Conference of the Birds’, a magnificent allegorical tale about the soul’s search for meaning. He recounts the perilous journey of the world’s birds to the faraway peaks of Mount Qaf in search of the mysterious Simorgh, their king. Attar’s beguiling anecdotes and humor intermingle the sublime with the mundane, the spiritual with the worldly, while his poem models the soul’s escape from the mind’s rational embrace.

At the age of 78, Attar died a violent death in the massacre which the Mongols inflicted on Nishapur in April 1221. Today, his mausoleum is located in Nishapur. It was built by Ali-Shir Nava’i in the 16th century.

Every year, a number of literati and scholars gathered at the mausoleum of the Persian poet Attar of Nishapur to mark Attar National Day, which was on April 13.

Busboys and Poets, a cultural center in Washington DC, has announced its plan to organize a poetry session on January 22, during which a group of poets will recite their poems in criticism of U.S. sanctions on Iran.

Some well-known figures in American and Iranian poetry such as Charles Bernstein, Pierre Joris and Sepideh Jodeyri are among the poets participating in the event entitled “A Night with American Poets against U.S. Sanctions on Iran”.

The session will reflect the suffering of the people of Iran since U.S. President Donald Trump imposed new economic sanctions on the country, Busboys and Poets has said in a statement.

Trump has himself labeled the sanctions as the “toughest ever”.

According to the United Nations Special Rapporteur Idriss Jazairy, “these unjust and harmful sanctions are destroying the economy and currency of Iran, driving millions of people into poverty and making imported goods unaffordable.”

Trump withdrew Washington unilaterally from the 2015 nuclear deal in May and ordered sanctions against Iran. The first round of sanctions went into force on August 6 and the second round, which targets Iran’s oil exports and banks, were snapped back on November 4.
