The value of Iran’s pistachio export rose three percent during the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-Septemebr 22), as compared to the same period of time in the past year, the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) announced.

As announced, Iran exported 20,000 tons of pistachio worth $137 million in the mentioned six-month period, indicating also seven percent growth in terms of weight, year on year.

Russia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), India and Kirgizstan were the main export destinations of Iranian pistachio during the first six months of the present year, according to the IRICA.

Although Iran is mostly known for its vast hydrocarbon resources, there are some other precious products that people all around the world put the Iranian brand on and appreciate greatly, one such product is Iranian “green gold” or pistachio.

Iran exported 56,298 tons of pistachio worth $405.04 million to 57 countries during the past Iranian calendar year 1401 (ended on March 20).

The annual export indicates a 55.7 percent fall in value and a 58.4 percent drop in weight, year on year.

Over the past decade, climate change has caused severe drought in Iran, leading to 85 percent of the country being classified as arid or semi-arid. The decline in annual average rainfall and shortage of surface water has forced farmers to dig more wells to pump water from underground reserves. Nearly half of the 750,000 wells dug in Iranian farms are illegal, which indicates why the unconstrained use of underground water in agriculture is the main source of water waste in the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Iran has exported over $95 million of pistachios to the European Union (EU) member states during the first nine months of 2022, IRNA reported citing the data released by the European Union’s statistics office, Eurostat.

Iran’s pistachio export to the union has dropped 39 percent in the first nine months of this year, from $154 million in the same period of time in the past year, the Eurostat data indicate.

The Islamic Republic was the second biggest exporter of pistachios to Europe after the United States in the mentioned nine months.

Germany, Spain, and Italy were the top importers of Iranian pistachios in January-September 2022, according to Eurostat data.

Although Iran is mostly known for its vast hydrocarbon resources, there are some other precious products that people all around the world put the Iranian brand on and appreciate greatly, one such product is Iranian “green gold” or pistachio.

Cultivation of pistachios in Iran dates back to the Achaemenid period or the fifth century B.C; Like the great dynasty, the Islamic Republic was the world’s unrivaled, leading producer of pistachios for a long time, with southeastern Kerman province being the hub of production for so-called green gold.

The situation is the same in Kerman province, which accounts for 70 percent of Iran’s pistachio production. As announced by Hossein Rezai, the secretary-general of the Iran Pistachio Association (IPA), the production of pistachio in Iran fell by 70,000 tons in the previous Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20) to hover at around 150,000 tons.

U.S. Is Iran’s Main Rival in Int’l Pistachio Market

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – Chairman of Iran Dried Fruit Exporters Association says currently the U.S. is Iran’s main rival in the international pistachio market adding that some European traders misuse the U.S. imposed sanctions on Iran.

Mr. Mohammad Hossein Shamsfard in an interview with ILNA pointed to the latest development in the international pistachio market, saying that last year pistachio was traded for $8,000 per ton but this year the price has fallen to $6,500 per ton because the U.S. has lowered the price of its product.

He noted that the U.S. with its pistachio, Turkey with its raisins and Arab countries with their dates are of major rivals of Iran in the international markets.

Shamsfard added that export of pistachio has been in good condition this year and it is still good, adding that of course one should not forget that season of harvesting pistachio has just begun and they have not been exported, and in the upcoming days exports of fresh products will start.

He claimed exporters have no major problems abroad and their major problems are in the country because of constant changes of regulations by the Central Bank which confuse the exporters.

Shamsfard added that it is predicted pistachio product to be between 200,000 to 230,000 tons this year while it was 175,000 tons last year.

He also pointed to the problems resulted by the sanctions, saying that exporters cannot get their money easily and all activities have been affected by the sanctions because exporters cannot have banking accounts in other countries.

Shamsfard noted that last year China was the main destination for Iran’s pistachio and Europe was the second and Arab states were the third. He admitted some European traders misuse the U.S. sanctions and they pay the money with delay under the pretext of sanctions and Iranian exporters cannot do any or take any legal action.

He reiterated Iran’s pistachio in the international market has a strong rival, dubbed the U.S., whose lowering of the price of pistachio makes Iran to suffer losses but this year it has not announced its price for pistachio yet.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran exported 21,720 tons of pistachio worth over $154.1 million during the first three months of the current Iranian year (March 20-June 20), announced the spokesman of Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).

Rouhollah Latifi said on Wednesday that China was the first destination for exported Iranian pistachio during the said period, with 5,547 tons ($35.4 million), followed by Germany, with 2,982 tons, Iraq with 1,866 tons, Russia 1,455 tons and Kazakhstan with 1,129 tons, respectively.

He noted that last year, Iran was the second exporter of pistachios in the world with $586 million, while the US, with $1.56 billion in exports, was at the top.

The global pistachio market is dominated by Iran and the US, two countries in stiff competition to gain a bigger share of the market, said the head of Iran Pistachio Association in December 2019.

Mahmoud Abtahi told Iran Daily that Italy, Greece, Afghanistan, Syria, and Turkey are also among the main players in the world pistachio market.

Abtahi noted that Iran exports about 80 percent of its pistachio harvest, adding that the price of the product in the local market is determined by its global price as well as its supply and demand.

The official referred to the 100-year history of Iran’s pistachio exports, and said, “We export pistachios to almost all countries, both directly and indirectly.”

Abtahi said that dried fruits are among the country’s most important non-oil exports, of which the share of pistachios is 70 percent.

The official cited Kerman, Khorasan Razavi, and Yazd as the provinces with the highest number of pistachio orchards in the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News)- Pistachio farmers in a county in Iran’s Southeastern province of Kerman, home to majority of the country’s pistachio gardens, are celebrating pistachio harvest of theirs today after collecting 17,000 tons of the fruit from 20,000 hectares of gardens in the county.

Governor of Anar County of Kerman province Ali Zahroudi said on Wednesday that despite temperature fluctuations more than 17,000 tons of pistachios were harvested from 20,000 hectare gardens of pistachio in the area.

He said that the celebrating pistachio harvest festival is holding today with the participation of some domestic and foreign guests.

Zahroudi highlighted that Anar County is among the most productive points for pistachios.

Iran and the US have been the biggest producers of pistachios in the world with the annual pistachio exports of 160,000 tons and 200,000 tons respectively.

Italy, Greece, Afghanistan, Syria and Turkey are also among the main players in the world pistachio market but none of them can compete with Iran.

Last Tuesday, Iranian Deputy Agriculture Minister Abdolmehdi Bakhshandeh announced that his country’s agri-food producers exported more than $2 billion in the first five months of the current local calendar year (March 21- September 22), with dairy products making up the biggest share of the country’s trade in this sector.

Pistachio, a main Iranian export item, came third in the list in terms of volume of shipments, as more than 21,000 tons of the nut were exported between March and September, generating over nearly $178 million in revenues.

Pistachio prices surged over the past years mainly because of poor harvests in Kerman, an arid region where nearly 300,000 tons of the nibble is produced each year.
