TEHRAN (Iran News) – Forty percent of phones worldwide are vulnerable to hacks that can turn them into spying tools by exploiting more than 400 vulnerabilities in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip, researchers reported this week.

The vulnerabilities can be exploited when a target downloads a video or other content that’s rendered by the chip. Targets can also be attacked by installing malicious apps that require no permissions at all, ArsTechnica reported.

From there, attackers can monitor locations and listen to nearby audio in real-time and exfiltrate photos and videos. Exploits also make it possible to render the phone completely unresponsive. Infections can be hidden from the operating system in a way that makes disinfecting difficult.

Snapdragon is what’s known as a system on a chip that provides a host of components, such as a CPU and a graphics processor. One of the functions, known as digital signal processing, or DSP, tackles a variety of tasks, including charging abilities and video, audio, augmented reality, and other multimedia functions. Phone makers can also use DSPs to run dedicated apps that enable custom features.

New attack surface

“While DSP chips provide a relatively economical solution that allows mobile phones to provide end users with more functionality and enable innovative features—they do come with a cost,” researchers from security firm Check Point wrote in a brief report of the vulnerabilities they discovered. “These chips introduce new attack surface and weak points to these mobile devices. DSP chips are much more vulnerable to risks as they are being managed as ‘Black Boxes’ since it can be very complex for anyone other than their manufacturer to review their design, functionality or code.”

Qualcomm has released a fix for the flaws, but so far it hasn’t been incorporated into the Android OS or any Android device that uses Snapdragon, Check Point said. When I asked when Google might add the Qualcomm patches, a company spokesman said to check with Qualcomm. The chipmaker didn’t respond to an email asking.

Check Point is withholding technical details about the vulnerabilities and how they can be exploited until fixes make their way into end-user devices. Check Point has dubbed the vulnerabilities Achilles. The more than 400 distinct bugs are tracked as CVE-2020-11201, CVE-2020-11202, CVE-2020-11206, CVE-2020-11207, CVE-2020-11208 and CVE-2020-11209.

In a statement, Qualcomm officials said: “Regarding the Qualcomm Compute DSP vulnerability disclosed by Check Point, we worked diligently to validate the issue and make appropriate mitigations available to OEMs. We have no evidence it is currently being exploited. We encourage end users to update their devices as patches become available and to only install applications from trusted locations such as the Google Play Store.”

Check Point said that Snapdragon is included in about 40 percent of phones worldwide. With an estimated 3 billion Android devices, that amounts to more than a billion phones. In the US market, Snapdragons are embedded in around 90 percent of devices.

There’s not much helpful guidance to provide users for protecting themselves against these exploits. Downloading apps only from Play can help, but Google’s track record of vetting apps shows that advice has limited efficacy. There’s also no way to effectively identify booby-trapped multimedia content.

Samsung could possibly announce at its Galaxy S10 press conference later this month, including up to five phones and an entire wearables lineup, we’re now leaning that LG’s new superphone has broken cover.

It turns an entire trail of bread crumbs into a remarkably decent picture of a phone worth watching for, the Verge reported.

We knew that LG was bringing a 5G smartphone to Sprint in the first half of 2019, and separately, we’d heard that the company might debut its rumored, 5G-equipped V50 superphone alongside the likely-to-be-more-reasonably-priced LG G8 at Mobile World Congress later this month.

But now, prominent phone leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) has given us what’s almost certainly our full first press pictures of the V50, and it seems those two reports are describing the same thing.

The LG V50 ThinQ appears to be headed to Sprint’s 5G nacent network, and we should see an announcement on February 24.

If you’re planning to buy two or more smartphones – perhaps for you and/or your family – and don’t want to spend a lot on them, Motorola currently has some offers that are worth your attention. For a limited time, the company lets you purchase two Moto G5S Plusphones or two Moto E4 Plus phones for the price of one. Now, these devices are over 1 year old and their big-bezel designs exude conservatism, but they’re still good enough – at least when it comes to cheap unlocked handsets that work on all relevant US carriers.

Here’s exactly what Motorola’s new BOGO (buy one, get one free) deals include:

Two Moto G5S Plus 32 GB for $279.99 ($140 per unit)

Two Moto G5S Plus 64 GB for $349.99 ($175 per unit)

Two Moto E4 Plus 16 GB for $179.99 ($90 per unit)

Two Moto E4 Plus 32 GB for $199.99 ($100 per unit)

These deals are available only here at Motorola(https://www.motorola.com/us/specials) and are valid until February 02, 2019 11:59 p.m. CST, or while supplies last.

Both the Moto G5S Plus (pictured above) and Moto E4 Plus are 5.5-inch handsets partially made out of metal. However, the G5S Plus is superior to the E4 Plus thanks to stuff like a 1080 x 1920 pixels display (versus 720 x 1280), a Snapdragon 625 processor (versus a weaker Snapdragon 427), and 3 GB of RAM (versus 2 GB). The two phones also offer long-lasting batteries, but the advantage here is definitely on the E4’s side – its massive 5,000 mAh battery can easily get you through 2 full days on a single charge.

For a closer look at these Motorola smartphones (including more details on battery life), you should read our Moto G5S Plus review and Moto E4 Plus review.

For the first time in two years, Samsung is expected to report a drop in quarterly operating profits when the company reports its fiscal fourth quarter results on January 8th. According to Reuters, data from the Institutional Brokers’ Estimate System (IBES) shows that Samsung is expected to announce a 12% drop in year-over-year operating profits to the equivalent of $11.85 billion USD. Revenue will be 5% lower due to lower shipments of memory chips.

Like Apple, which announced last week that it was lowering its revenue guidance for the fiscal first quarter that ended last month, Samsung is being hurt by poor economic conditions in China. Samsung’s smartphone operating profits are believed to have slipped by 20% during the quarter, compared to the same three month period last year. Samsung has only a 1% share of the Chinese smartphone market compared to Apple’s 9%. But unlike Apple, Samsung is affected by lower sales of its processor and memory chips to Chinese smartphone manufacturers. These components make up more than 75% of Samsung’s earnings and 38% of its revenue.

The decline in Samsung’s chip business is expected to drop operating profits in that division by 3.7% during the fiscal fourth quarter to the equivalent of $9.4 billion USD. Shipments of the company’s memory chips are believed to have dropped by 10% during the three month period.

China’s economy is being affected by the current trade war with the U.S. Certain exports from China are being taxed, raising their prices in the states and dampening demand for these products.

The reputation of BLU Products, a US-based smartphone vendor known for the impressive specifications and premium looks of its ultra-affordable devices, was severely damaged by a number of data privacy scandals and a catastrophic software update a while ago.

But the company has been discreetly mounting a comeback of sorts, promising to turn over a new leaf as far as both security and software support are concerned. And now the BLU Vivo XI and Vivo XI+, the latter of which is guaranteed to receive an Android Pie makeover in the near future, are getting official Verizon certification.

Even though that doesn’t mean the two handsets will be sold directly by the nation’s top wireless service provider, BLU’s partnership with Big Red is still a noteworthy accomplishment.

The controversial brand’s unlocked phones are typically available in GSM-only variants, exclusively supporting activation on networks like AT&T and T-Mobile. The BLU Vivo XI and BLU Vivo XI+ are no exception, fetching $220 and $300 respectively at Best Buywithout explicit CDMA connectivity required for use on Verizon or Sprint.

But after purchasing any of the two unlocked devices, you can now take them to the largest carrier stateside and enjoy the benefits of its expansive 4G LTE network. Existing Vivo XI and XI+ owners can also switch to Verizon after receiving a software update and contacting BLU’s customer support for activation instructions.

Joining Big Red’s Bring your Own Device program with one of these bad boys makes you eligible for a $150 prepaid MasterCard and a free SIM card as well.

Not too shabby for Android 8.1 Oreo-powered 5.9 and 6.2-inchers featuring dual 16 + 5MP rear-facing cameras, rear-mounted fingerprint scanners, trendy notched screens with relatively thin bezels, and remarkably sleek designs for their price points. The larger model comes with a sharper display, more memory and storage, as well as a faster Helio P60 processor (compared to the P22 on the smaller BLU Vivo XI).

Checking phones while eating or spending time with friends is less likely to make life enjoyable for people, as a study finds.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia in Canada found that mobile phone use is making people more distracted, distant and drained as a result of its pervasiveness in our modern lives.

Even having a mobile phone within easy access during a meal is enough to make diners not enjoy the experience as much as those who keep their devices out of reach while they eat.

As part of the study, 300 restaurant goers in Vancouver filled out a questionnaire after their meal that was designed to gauge their feelings of social connectedness, enjoyment, distraction and boredom, Independent reported.

The experiment required some participants to keep their phones on the table with sound notifications turned on, while the rest were told to put their handsets on silent and place them in a container.

“People who were allowed to use their phones during dinner had more trouble staying present in the moment,” said the study’s lead author Ryan Dwyer, whose research was presented at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association.

“Decades of research on happiness tell us that engaging positively with others is critical for our wellbeing. Modern technology may be wonderful, but it can easily sidetrack us and take away from the special moments we have with friends and family in person.”

A second part of the study involved a survey of 120 students in West Virginia, who were questioned five times a day for one week about what they had been doing in the 15 minutes leading up to the survey.

Students who had been using their smartphones during face-to-face interactions with other people reported feeling less enjoyment and being less interested in the conversation than those that didn’t.

Dr Elizabeth Dunn, the study’s co-author, noted that the survey’s results were particularly remarkable considering students are commonly known as digital natives.

“We assumed that this generation would be more adept at multi-tasking between using their phones and interacting with others, but we found out even moderate levels of phone use undermined the benefits of engaging with others,” Dr Dunn said.

It is an issue recognised by mobile phone makers, as well as the companies responsible for developing the software that devices use.

Earlier this week, Google released the ninth edition of its Android mobile operating system, which included controls to help people spend less time on their smartphones. The “digital wellbeing” feature for Android – the world’s most popular mobile OS – allows people to set timers on specific apps and lock them out when a limit is reached.

“While much of the time we spend on our phones is useful, many of us wish we could disconnect more easily and free up time for other things,” Google said in a blog post introducing the new controls. “In fact, over 70 per cent of people we talked to in our research said they want more help with this.”

Other studies presented at the symposium found that narcissists are more likely to spend time on social media than more compassionate people.

Also, people with lower emotional intelligence are reportedly more likely to use apps like Facebook and Instagram.

HTC is the latest to hop onto the blockchain bandwagon, with the company announcing plans to make a new blockchain-powered Android phone, as first reported by TheNextWeb.

The company is naming it Exodus and giving it a universal wallet and hardware support for cryptocurrencies and decentralized apps.

To start with, the Exodus phone will have support for bitcoin, ethereum, and other major networks, with more partnerships expected to come later on. HTC envisions a native blockchain network that uses Exodus phones as nodes that support cryptocurrency trading between users. HTC is also reportedly considering allowing people to purchase the Exodus phone with cryptocurrency. No price has been set yet for the phone.

HTC Vive founder Phil Chen will be heading all blockchain initiatives. The move follows the recent trend of Facebook Messenger and Instagram executives switching over to lead a blockchain division for Facebook. Accordingly, Chen’s new title will be “decentralized chief officer.” We’ve also reached out to HTC for more information.

Chen said during the New York City blockchain conference, Consensus 2018, today: “We envision a phone where you hold your own keys, you own your own identity and data, and your phone is the hub.”

HTC’s Exodus might be the world’s second blockchain-powered phone. The first one, created by Sirin Labs, called Finney, is a phone that lets people store and use digital currencies while skipping transaction fees. It costs $1,000.

It’s interesting to note the range of companies that have launched their own blockchain initiatives, from established companies seeking more profits and to remain competitive to decentralized networks, to those seeking novelty, and others that are trying to rescue their images. HTC, which laid off a significant portion of its US staff this year and merged its smartphone and virtual reality divisions, might fall in the last category of companies.

After leaking some of the details itself, LG has finally taken the wraps off its newest smartphone. The LG G7 ThinQ (yes, that’s actually the name) matches all the leaks from unofficial sources.

It has some things we expect out of the G-series, including a dual camera and high-resolution LCD panel. However, it also borrows features from the competition — there’s a notch, and “AI” in the camera. The G7 ThinQ looks like a perfectly fine phone, but fine might not be enough in 2018.

The first thing you’ll probably notice about the G7 ThinQ is that screen. It’s a 6.1-inch LCD with a resolution of 1440 x 3120. That works out to a 19.5:9 ratio, which is taller than phones like the Galaxy S9 or Pixel 2 XL. LG also says this panel can hit 1,000 nits of brightness, which is in the same neighborhood as the Galaxy S9. You might notice the bezels are not symmetrical on the G7. Unlike the iPhone X, this device has a “chin” in addition to a notch. That kind of defeats the purpose — unless the purpose is to look like a bad iPhone clone.

The notch is, of course, a design popularized by Apple last year with the iPhone X, and several Android device makers have created their own versions of the notch. LG will allow you to “turn off” the notch in software, but that just means filling the screen on either side with black instead of whatever UI is on the screen. That might look a bit weird with an LCD that lacks the perfect black levels of OLED.

LG is also talking up AI in the G7 ThinQ, but there’s not much to it. The camera can recognize specific objects and suggest filters. This is identical to the V30S ThinQ that LG announced at MWC, and there’s no hardware aspect like with Huawei’s camera AI. That phone has a neural network core in its CPU for AI processing. LG simply licensed a computer vision system from a third-party and slapped it in the camera.

One undeniably handy feature of the G7 ThinQ is the Assistant button. It’s on the left edge of the phone. You can press that at any time to pull up Google Assistant and issue voice commands. It’s sort of like Samsung’s Bixby Button, except useful. It’ll also ship with Android 8.0 Oreo.

The G7 ThinQ includes all the flagship-level internals you’d expect, like a Snapdragon 845, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. Interestingly, the battery is only 3,000mAh. With a 6.1-inch LCD, that battery might struggle to keep up with devices like the Galaxy S9+. The internal speaker, as previously described, will reportedly be 10 times louder than other phones.

LG hasn’t provided pricing for the G7 ThinQ yet, but it’ll probably be similar to the Galaxy S9. It’ll be on carriers in the coming weeks.

Simply put, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is a bigger version of the Samsung Galaxy S9. (Check out our Samsung S9 review to find out more about the S9 Plus’s smaller sibling.) And this comes without the S9 Plus being that much different to last year’s Samsung Galaxy S8, either.

Yes, it is an iterative update, but when you consider how most other Android makers are still in the process of catching up with Samsung’s technical juggernaut, that is no bad thing, especially when you consider what Samsung has spent its time adding this time around.

As with the Samsung Galaxy S9, the standout new hardware on the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus this year is the phone’s rear 12MP dual-aperture camera system, which not only offers enhanced low-light and bright-light image and video taking capabilities, but also sits at the heart of this year’s other innovations, such as Super Slow-mo recording, AR Emoji, and an upgraded version of Samsung’s Bixby assistant AI, which now delivers real-time object detection and recognition, so again its focus makes sense.

And the new camera system, as well as AR Emoji and Bixby Vision are not the only things the S9 Plus shares with the S9, too. In terms of hardware, there is very little difference between the two handsets (the S9 Plus has a little more RAM and internal storage), so it’s only natural to wonder what makes the more expensive S9 Plus worthy our attention.

For the answer and all-important detail then read on.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus will be available in the UK (and worldwide) from March 16th, with pre-orders open on February 25th from 18:00 GMT.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus will be available in three colours: Lilac Purple, Midnight Black (the model we reviewed) and Coral Blue.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus will cost £869. The phone will be purchasable directly from Samsung as well as select retailers.

As viewable in the image a little further up this page, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is identical to the Samsung Galaxy S9, just bigger. It also looks, at first glance, just like the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus from last year, but in actual fact they are not identical.

The same luxurious and premium melding of metal frame and glass is still in evidence, however, and as with the S9 if you look closely you will see that the Galaxy S9 Plus’s bezels are now slightly reduced, shaving a little off the phone’s total height.

The other major difference to the Galaxy S8 Plus in terms of design, as we mentioned above, is that the phone’s fingerprint scanner is now located centre-back of the handset under the dual-aperture camera system. We feel this not only looks better but, in practice, makes it far easier to unlock the phone while also avoiding smudging the rear camera’s lens in the process (a common complaint last year).

Other than that, much has stayed the same. The S9 Plus still has a 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD card slot (which can take up to 400GB), and Bixby button on the left side of the device near the volume buttons.

The S9 Plus’ screen is the same delicious 6.2-inch display that featured on the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and, yes, it is still drop-dead gorgeous. It looks superb on the S9 and, with extra space available here, the Super AMOLED 18.5:9 panel only looks even better. The Quad HD+ resolution at 529ppi looks pin sharp and delivers fantastically vibrant colours and a high contrast that makes images, games and media really jump out of the screen.

The screen also fills 90 per cent of the phone’s front space and, with zero sensors, buttons or visible cameras, has an incredibly elegant and futuristic look.

While the screen itself isn’t new, Samsung has tweaked the screen’s landscape mode, meaning that the whole user interface now rotates to fit the widescreen format, meaning that you can easily respond to messages and post to social media while still enjoying your video content.

In terms of internal hardware spec, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus comes equipped with 6GB of RAM (the S9 has 4GB), 128GB of internal storage space and its new Exynos 9810 processor (well, everywhere except the US market, who are getting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 CPU).

This combination of internal hardware, in partnership with the S9’s Super AMOLED screen, simply delivers a fantastically fast, vivid and powerful user experience. Games load quickly and run smoothly, 4K, HDR films and TV shows look stunning, and using and switching between apps is seamless and delay-free.

Both the S9 Plus and S9 share Samsung’s new 12MP rear camera with dual-aperture technology, a system that has been designed to deliver enhanced low-light and bright-light image and video taking.

The camera works by ditching the fixed aperture system that is common in smartphones today for one that can expand and contract like the iris of a human eye. This means that the S9 Plus’s camera automatically lets in more light to its sensor when the surrounding environment is too dark, and then less light when it is too light, leading to less images that are blown out or too dark for detail to pop.

end of part 1
