TEHRAN (Iran News) – At least five people have been killed and several hundred hospitalized after a gas leak at a chemical plant on the east coast of India, police said Thursday.

They said that the gas had leaked out of two 5,000-ton tanks that had been unattended due to India’s coronavirus lockdown in place since late March.

“We can confirm at least five deaths right now. More will be confirmed later. At least 70 people in the nearby hospitals are in an unconscious state and overall 200 to 500 locals are still getting treatment (at the hospitals),” said police official Swaroop Rani in Visakhapatnam.

The plant operated by LG Polymers is located on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam, an industrial port city in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The city and the surrounding area are home to around five million people.

The gas “was left there because of the lockdown. It led to a chemical reaction and heat was produced inside the tanks, and the gas leaked because of that,” Rani, an assistant commissioner, told AFP.

“We received an emergency call from the local villagers around 3.30 am in the morning today. They said there was some gas in the air,” she said.

“We reached there immediately. One could feel the gas in the air and it was not possible for any of us to stay there for more than a few minutes. Prepared rescue workers started working from around 4.00 am.”

India witnessed in December 1984 one of the worst industrial disasters in history when gas leaked from a pesticide plant in the central city of Bhopal.

Around 3,500 people, mainly in shanties around the plant operated by Union Carbide, died in the days that followed and thousands more in the following years. People continue to suffer its after-effects to this day.

Government statistics say that at least 100,000 people living near to the Unnion Carbide plant have been victims of chronic illnesses.

Survivors still suffer from ailments such as respiratory and kidney problems, hormonal imbalances, mental illness, and several forms of cancer.

New generations have been made ill by the polluted groundwater and poisonous breastmilk fed to them from birth.

To this day, children are stillborn disfigured with webbed hands and feet, weak immune systems, stunted growth, and congenital disorders owing to the gas that affected their mothers.

He added that it is a milestone accomplishment for Iran to finish such a big project despite US sanctions, reported Fars News Agency.

The official said that the project would bring about many positive impacts on the region’s economy, adding the plant had created over 2,000 direct jobs.

The National Development Fund of Iran was to be tapped for funding Lordegan Petrochemical Plant.

In October, the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) of Iran announced in a statement that the diversity of petrochemicals produced in Iran is expected to be enhanced by 2025 as the country is planning to realize the sector’s second and third leaps by 2025.

The first leap of the industry took place in 2011 while the second and third leaps are planned to be realized by 2021 and 2025, respectively.

Furthermore, NPC considered feedstock supply to the plants as a priority, adding that the leaps would allow domestic production of key petrochemical items in the country.

“NPC, besides managing feedstock supply to petrochemical plants, concerns value-chain completion and curbing crude oil and gas sales while taking steps to diversify the petrochemical production mix of the country,” the statement added.

With South Pars gas field’s new phases going operational, the required feedstock for all the country’s petrochemical plants will be supplied during the cold season and none of them will stop production, Shana reported quoting an official with the National Petrochemical Company (NPC).

“In the past few years, during the cold season some petrochemical complexes would go offline due to a lack of feedstock [resulted from the increase in household gas consumption].” Ghodratollah Farajpour, the NPC’s director of production control, said.

According to the official, Iran produced 27.5 million tons of petrochemical products during the first half of current Iranian calendar year (March 21-September 22).

Farajpour noted that the figure shows two percent increase compared to the first half of the previous year.

The NPC director noted that this rise has occurred despite overhaul operation in a number of high-capacity production units during the first half of this year which made some halts in production of these units.

The value of petrochemical exports from the country during the first eight months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-November 21) rose 32 percent compared to the same period of time in the past year.
