TEHRAN (Iran News) He noted that the petrochemical sector has achieved favorable growth due to its existing infrastructure and already utilizes some of the most advanced technologies.

Abbaszadeh highlighted that the foundation of the petrochemical industry lies in the use of technologies, technical expertise, and licenses.

He stressed the need to establish a roadmap for integrating global knowledge and AI into the industry.

“Today, with the use of cutting-edge knowledge and technology, we can move toward sustainable development in all dimensions,” the NPC head said.

The deputy minister added that all petrochemical complexes can be interconnected through a comprehensive plan, enabling forward-looking assessments.

“In the first step, data should be collected at a central hub, and necessary analyses should be accelerated to facilitate the best decision-making,” he said.

Abbaszadeh explained that in the next phase, the market for petrochemical products could be linked to a central database. “Market analyses can be conducted using recorded data, and holdings seeking market development can utilize this capacity,” he said.

He further noted that AI could be used to analyze the need for new units based on national requirements, data, and technology. “For example, this data can inform us about which products in the chain have higher added value,” he said.

Abbaszadeh emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration and interaction to facilitate joint efforts. He said the agreement should be pursued by all stakeholders to be formalized into a contract.

Following negotiations with Marun Petrochemical Company, it was agreed that the company would take a leading role in this initiative.

According to a report by Shana, the company’s extruder blade is originally made by a German company, which has not been available for purchase and production for many years due to sanctions.

The vitality of this part in the production process led the Iranian experts of Jam Polypropylene Complex to successfully produce this important part after extensive research.

The domestic production of extruder blade in each set of 36 pieces leads to saving $170,000.
An Iranian commerce official said in April that a European company plans to invest €400 million in Iran’s major petrochemical project in the southeastern port of Chabahar.

The European firm will invest in machinery and equipment needed for a methanol production project in Chabahar, said Ahmad Jamali, a deputy for Iran’s high council on free trade zones.

Jamali did not disclose the name of the European company but said that it had previously worked in Iran.

Required permits have been obtained from the relevant Iranian institutions for the activity of the European investor and land has been allocated for the beginning of the project, Jamali said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The steady increase in gas output of Iran has provided the domestic petrochemical players with the opportunity to diversify their feedstocks in a bid to tackle the shortages created in the past years.

The insufficient production of vital gas feedstocks has been one of the biggest challenges facing the development of the country’s petrochemical industry throughout the past two decades.

The challenge has mostly been felt by the gas-burning ethane producers struggling with feedstock shortage.

Ethane is among the highest value-added products used as feedstock in petrochemical plants. Each ton of ethane, as the principal element in manufacturing petrochemicals, namely ethylene can generate at least $1,000 in export revenue.

However, in the recent past, the lack of ethane supply made the country to assign a monthly quota of the material to the petrochemical companies.

But the quotas are gradually eliminated as more South Pars Gas Field phases in the Persian Gulf are becoming fully operational. With the development and operation of most phases of South Pars and the countdown for finalization of the remaining phases of the giant gas reservoir on the one hand and the implementation of three crucial gas projects in Assaluyeh and Kangan, the petchem sector will be provided with an abundance of different gas feedstocks.

The domestic demand for ethane is now 5.5 million tons and the envisaged surplus can later be exported.

Current ethane output

The production capacity of ethane from South Pars has reached about 700 million cubic meters per day. With the completion and operation of a number of ongoing projects in the current year, this capacity will definitely exceed 700 million cubic meters.

South Pars is the world’s largest gas field, covering an area of 3,700 square kilometers of Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. It adjoins Qatar’s North Field, which measures 6,000 square kilometers.

Once fully operational, the South Pars will produce a total of 10.6 million tons of ethane per year.

Bidboland 2 Refinery and the drilling of new wells in the Khangiran and South Zagros basins can be expected to generate a capacity of 1 billion cubic meters of methane gas per day. Bidboland 2 Refinery has an annual production capacity of about 1.5 million tons of ethane, which is to be transferred to Mahshahr in the first stage of this valuable gas to be fed to some petrochemical complexes.

It can be said that increasing the production of ethane will provide feed for urea, ammonia and methanol projects and complexes from a profit and provide fuel for the entire petrochemical industry.

Ethane production capacity in Asaluyeh currently stands at around 7.5 million tons a year.

There also are plans to increase ethane production in the region in the current fiscal, including the first phase of Bushehr Petrochemical Complex with an annual capacity of 850,000 tons of methane, and Parsian Sepehr Refinery, with 1.3 million tons per year, as well as phases 12 and 14 of South Pars, with a capacity of 1.7 and 1 million tons respectively.

When all the units are operational, the annual production of ethane in Asaluyeh will rise to more than 14 million tons.

Diversification of petrochemical feedstocks

Besides ethane and methane, the production of gas condensate – as another strategic feedstock – is envisaged to exceed one million barrels per day with the operation of the remaining phases of South Pars and other important gas projects. A major part of the condensate will be fed to the Persian Gulf Star Refinery, in Hormozgan province, and the rest will be sent to the aromatic producing complexes. Another part will be spent on food for the aromatic products’ manufacturers.

Propane and butane are other petrochemical feedstocks the production of which is expected to exceed 12 million tons per annum after the South Pars phases go on full swing.

The two materials can be used as a fuel for households and the petrochemical industry.

In general, increasing the production capacity of methane, ethane, propane, butane and gas condensate, will diversify the feedstock baskets of the petrochemical players and thus help them propel their plans despite the cruel economic terrorism imposed by the United States against Iran’s strategic sector.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s petrochemical exports have increased 1.5 times over the past six years in view of the completion of a number of projects within the same time span.

This has helped Iran improve its status in international petrochemical markets, raise its exports of raw materials and boost production of downstream products, according to IRNA.

Iran’s petrochemical industry has taken two major leaps since 1997. During 1997-2013, the country managed to increase its production of petrochemicals from 5.8 million tons per year to 22.6 million tons per annum. In addition, the value of Iran’s overseas sales of petrochemicals reached $11.85 billion in 2013 from $500 million in 1997.

As part of the industry’s second huge leap, the country’s installed production capacity amounted to 66 million tons per year over the past six years. This was accomplished by completing the implementation of 15 projects in this period with $5.4 billion in investments and helped Iran’s exports of petrochemicals witness a 1.5-fold growth since 2013.

Among the achievements of the Iranian petrochemical industry’s accelerated development over the past six years have been a decline in the country’s exports of raw materials, an increase in its creation of added-value and a boost in the production of downstream products.

In the year to March 2019, 8.5 million tons of petrochemicals, 29.5 percent of the country’s total output, were consumed domestically.

Despite the imposition of unilateral sanctions by Washington on Tehran, Iranian petrochemical firms are still exporting their products, generating substantial foreign currency revenues.

In May 2018, Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed between Iran and the P5+1 in July 2015, and reimposed Washington’s unilateral sanctions on Tehran.

In light of the Iranian government’s management of domestic petrochemical companies’ income, currently, the firms’ foreign currency revenues are injected almost entirely into the country’s economy, of which 80 percent are made available for imports through Iran’s domestic Forex Management Integrated System (locally known as NIMA).

The accelerated development of the domestic petrochemical industry has also helped create close to one million direct jobs.

If the development of the Iranian petrochemical sector continues to gather momentum, the country’s annual petrochemical production capacity will stand at 100 million tons in the year to March 2022, generating $37 billion in foreign currency revenues. This means that Iran’s annual installed production capacity of petrochemicals would increase 79 percent by March 2022, compared to the figure for 2013, thus, helping the income generated by the sector see an over 60 percent growth.

To achieve this target, 28 high priority projects are required to be completed in the country by March 2021 with $17 billion in investments.

CEO of National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Reza Norouzzadeh said that petrochemical industry of the country is ‘unsanctionable’ and petrochemicals in the country will be exported to the global markets according to the scheduled program.

Sanctions will have no significant effect in petrochemical industry of the country, he said, adding, “however, petrochemical industry should be prepared with high technical knowhow and knowledge in order to minimize its vulnerability from sanctions.”

Following the US unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), any significant export change will not occur in Iran’s petrochemical industry, he reiterated.

He put the total value of petrochemicals exported from the country in the past year (ended March 20, 2018) at $12 billion.

Statistics in the first four months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-July 21) show that Iran’s export of petrochemicals has increased as much as 15 percent as compared to the same period of last year, he said, adding, “currently, we are not concerned about any restriction in export of petrochemicals, because, European countries are major customers for Iranian petrochemical products.”

The deputy oil minister pointed out that any supply and demand of petrochemicals is clear in the global market and said, “since production and consumption of petrochemicals is clear in the world, Iran’s petrochemical industry cannot be ignored in this market.”

Replacing Iran’s petrochemical products in the global market will require making huge investment for a period of 4 to 5 years, he said, adding, “removal of Iran from world’s petrochemical market is not feasible and will cost dearly.”
