“In order to have a value chain system for the petrochemical industry, it is necessary to identify the needs and export capacities of the downstream industries, and Iran Plast International Exhibition plays an effective role in realizing this goal,” Morteza Shah-Mirzaei said.

“One of the important things for the growth and development of the petrochemical industry is to complete the value chain and create added value with the aim of making the most of investment opportunities,” he added.

Emphasizing that one of the strategic policies of the National Petrochemical Company is the development of technology in downstream petrochemical industries, the official said: “One of the pillars of drawing the value chain system is focusing on technology transfer through indigenization of new technologies and development of Iranian technical knowledge.”

The NPC head emphasized that the Iran Plast exhibition, as the largest event of the country’s petrochemical industry, can play an effective role in the development of the infrastructure in this industry in order to improve the business environment and remove possible obstacles and problems to have a balanced development path ahead.

Iran’s 17th International Exhibition of Plastic, Rubber, Machinery, and Equipment is going to be held from September 17 to 20 at the Tehran Permanent International Fairground.

Like the previous years, this edition of the exhibition will also cover four major areas including raw materials, machinery, and equipment, final and semi-finished products as well as services.

As the biggest event in the petrochemicals and plastics industry in West Asia, Iran Plast was held for the first time in 2002 on the initiative of NPC in order to boost the domestic plastics industry market, facilitate the global marketing process, and present in global markets.

Referring to the value creation of the petrochemical industry in the country’s economy, Ebrahim Bazian, the CEO of SSIC, at the 14th International Iran Petrochemical Forum (IPF) in Tehran, said that the industry aided Iran’s economy at the height of the sanctions.

Bazian stated: “Today the maximum capacity of Iran’s petrochemical industry has reached 92 million tons, which is expected to reach 95 million tons by the end of the current year.”

“This capacity can be increased to one and a half to two times in a middle perspective in order to bring about a balanced development in the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors,” Bazian added.

Despite imposed sanctions on Iran’s industry, the localization of equipment has always been a concern of Iran’s oil industry, and 44 years after Iran’s Islamic Revolution, this sector, making a significant trend in exporting these products, has reached 85% self-sufficiency in manufacturing equipment needed by the oil, gas, and petrochemical industry.

Meanwhile on Monday, the document on the development and completion of the value chain of the petrochemical industry was unveiled in the presence of Iranian Oil Minister Javad Oji and National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Managing Director Morteza Shahmirzaei.

The document was unveiled on Monday evening on the sidelines of the 14th Iran Petrochemical Forum (IPF).

As reported, all petrochemical companies and holdings should adjust their development plans in line with this document.

According to the NPC officials, if necessary, the document on the development and completion of the value chain of the petrochemical industry will be updated with the coordination of the NPC. In this way, according to the information in this document, investors can invest in Iran’s petrochemical sector with more confidence.

The 14th Iran Petrochemical Forum (IPF) kicked off at IRIB International Conference Center (IICC) in Tehran on Monday.

Focusing on “Value Chain, New Opportunities”, the two-day forum revolves around eight topics, including: “Feedstock, products and supply chain”, “Solutions and advanced optimization technologies”, “Integration and coordination between petrochemical and refining complexes”, “Production process and market”, “Methanol market and its roles”, “Global energy crisis and future of the petrochemical industry”, “Investment and financial supply opportunities”, and “Energy optimization and production without pollution”.

As stated by the managing director of National Petrochemical Company (NPC), “Our today’s important objective of completing the production chain in the country’s petrochemical sector highlights the significance of holding this conference”,

Morteza Shahmirzaei has expressed hope that IPF can pave the way to achieve all strategic petrochemical products in the world.

As reported, 15 countries, including the members of the BRICS countries (five leading economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) as well as some European countries, are participating in IPF, which is a famous scientific conference in the world, and the latest products and achievements of the petrochemical industry are being presented and introduced in the two-day event.

An industry source said that petrochemicals shipment had accounted for $12 billion or 27% of Iran’s total exports in the 10 months to late January.

Hamid Hosseini, a senior member of Iran’s Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters Union (OPEX), said oil products exports from Iran had reached $13 billion between March 2022 and January this year.

Hosseini said that Iran had earned some $4.9 billion from exports of 6.6 million metric tons (mt) of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the nine months to late December, an increase of 120% compared to the same previous period.

He said exports of methanol from Iran had reached $1.8 billion for 6.8 million mt of shipments in the nine months to late December.

The businessman added that Iran had exported 1.6 million mt of urea worth $975 million in the nine calendar months to the end of 2022, adding that exports of polymers also increased by 77% over the same period.

A y report by the official IRNA news agency said that Iran had earned some $1 billion from exports of bitumen over the 10 months to late January.

The figures come amid Iran’s continued efforts to increase its exports of petroleum products and petrochemicals as a solution to avoid foreign sanctions affecting its direct crude oil exports.

Experts say the policy has strengthened Iran’s non-oil exports and led to the creation of tens of thousands of new jobs in the country.

Reacting to a report that the U.S. is working to zero Iraq’s dependence on Iran’s gas and electricity, Hosseini said that it is impossible because Iraq’s condition is in a way that they cannot cut their dependence on Iran’s gas and electricity and pointed to the reasons for this dependence.

He added that with development of industries and consumption in Iraq, this country will continue to buy Iran’s gas and electricity because Iraq is unable to import all of its needs via its ports, Saudi Aabia, Kuwait or Turkey and it needs at least to import 20m to 25m tons of its needs either transit from Iran or buying Iranian goods and energy.

Speaking in a press conference, Mahdavi said that petrochemical industry is a rewarding industry and if the country seeks sustainable economy, it should focus fully on this industry. He went on to say that petrochemical industries in last decade used to challenge with the primary sanctions and economic war and after U.S. President Donald Trump left the JCPOA and reimposed sanctions, this industry with its exports, production and earning forex helped the national economy.

He reiterated that currently the companies pre-sell their products, adding that today the world is moving towards using new technology and petrochemical products are turned into more value added and this industry today enjoys having a special stance and has considerable role in the people’s lives and this role increases more day in day. He reiterated that everybody who seeks economic growth in the country should help this industry.

Mahdavi went on to say that 39.6% of the non-oil exports in the first half of the current year belong to the petrochemical sector and this industry should be developed in order to meet the Iranian calendar year 1404 targets and 140m tons of production.

He also said that currently some 17,000 people are busy and active in the downstream units of this industry, adding that the industry sells some 6 to 7 billion dollars of its products in the domestic market which are used in the complementary industries and after being converted into the final goods, they are exported.

Mahdavi predicted that the petrochemical products exports would hit $17b by the yearend and this year $15b would be injected into the NIMA system. He admitted that the Ukraine war has also affected Iran’s petrochemical sector, adding that consequences of this war o Iran is doubled because the country is also under the sanctions, adding that while the price of gas has increased, the price of methanol in China has declined and since the country is under sanction, China takes advantage of this situation. He reiterated that petrochemical units should be helped in a way that they do not lose the market and also continue the previous route of exports because Iran can turn into the hub of methanol production of the world in the near future.

He pointed to the amount of the non-oil exports of the country in the current year which stands at $24.251b, adding that $9.605b of this figure belongs to the petrochemical industry.

He reiterated that in the first half of last year, the amount of petrochemical products exports was $6.95b but this year it has increased to $9.605 and in fact the non-oil exports have not grown except in the petrochemical sector.

He stated that the amount of petrochemical production in the first seven months of last year was 38.66m tons but the figure has increased to 41.55m tons in the same period this year and it shows 7% growth.

Speaking on national TV on Sunday night, Oji said the mentioned parks are going to be constructed in southern Iran where most of the country’s oil and gas reserves lay.

According to the official, the Oil Ministry first identified 29 areas in four provinces on the coasts of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, and after assessing the mentioned areas 13 sites have been finally chosen based on studies of land, the possibility of providing feed and the availability of ancillary facilities.

Mentioning a meeting with First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber and some experts and oil industry officials, as well as the representatives of some major petrochemical complexes on Sunday, Oji said that the resources for the implementation of these parks are going to be supplied by the Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (PGPIC), bank facilities, and some private investment.

“These parks will be established in four provinces of Khuzestan, Bushehr, Hormozgan, and Sistan-Baluchestan,” he added.

“One of the main duties of the Oil Ministry is to prevent the sale of raw materials and to complete the oil industry’s value chain, which is emphasized by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution,” Oji said.

Mentioning the country’s petrochemical capacity, the minister said: “Today there are 60 petrochemical complexes in the country whose 70 percent of major products are exported in the form of semi-crude products, and the other 30 percent is consumed inside the country.”

Saying that the completion of the value chain is one of the priorities of the Oil Ministry, Oji added: “In this regard, a plan has been made to complete the value chain for the mentioned 70 percent of products; this can create added value, prevent the outflow of revenues, generate higher income and create jobs.”

Establishing petchem parks to create employment: VP

Mohammad Mokhber who had also attended the meeting with Oji on Sunday to discuss the establishment of the mentioned petrochemical parks emphasized that dynamism in the petrochemical fields is one of the country’s main advantages.

“The marine economy and the oil industry value chain in southern Iran are very important and should be focused on by the 13th government with proper and timed planning for the prosperity of this part of the country’s economy,” Mokhber said.

The first vice president considered the establishment of petrochemical parks and petro-refineries on the shores of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman as a major driving force for the maritime economy and job creation in the region and added: “The implementation of these petrochemical settlements on the seashore is one of the important and priority plans of the government.”
