The two sides met in the third match of the group stages, which saw the Selecao emerge with a whopping 5-0 victory. They couldn’t manage a repeat of that scoreline in the final, but they won’t be complaining, as they secured their first Copa America title for 12 years.

The home side started shakily, but soon got to grips with an energetic Peruvian side and they began to take control of the game. They made their pressure count when an unmarked Everton steered the ball home from a deep Gabriel Jesus cross on 15 minutes.

Unlike this fixture a couple of weeks ago, Peru were able to maintain their composure, restrict Brazil’s play and keep the score down to 1-0 for the majority of the half. That was until they were awarded a penalty just before half-time, which Paolo Guerrero duly stuck home to draw the score level on 44 minutes.

Just as Peru manager Ricardo Gareca thought he would have a positive team talk to give at the break, Jesus broke through to regain the Brazilian lead with the last kick of the half. A sucker punch for Peru.

The second half was fairly uneventful, as Peru looked happy to keep their one-goal deficit until a golden opportunity presented itself. And in a way, it did in the 70th minute as Jesus was given a harsh second yellow card, reducing the hosts to ten men. Peru smelled blood.

Witnesses said the fire started in the bus’s motor at the rear of the vehicle and quickly spread to its interior, according to the spokesman Lewis Mejia, in broadcast comments on local TV channel Canal N.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, he added.

Lima’s Mayor Jorge Munoz said the bus burst into flames at a bustop that authorities had banned just weeks ago because it was located next to an illegal shop that sells fuel, Reuters reported.

“It appears that on the second floor of bus, where most of the victims were found, they were transporting fuel. That’s a very serious matter,” Munoz told journalists in broadcast comments before visiting survivors at a local hospital.

Eight units of firefighters were deployed to put out the fire on the bus, which had been headed to the northern coastal city of Chiclayo, according to local broadcaster RIP.

TV images showed the scorched remains of the vehicle surrounded by crowds of people in the district of San Martin de Porres on the outskirts of the capital.

Authorities in Lima have repeatedly failed to reign in the city’s so-called “informal” transportation system, a chaotic network of independent and unauthorized vans and buses used by millions of people every day.

Firefighters found that the bus lacked fire extinguishers and safety equipment, RPP reported

Munoz vowed to punish the owners.

“They have defied a municipal order…I’m completely outraged,” Munoz said. “These people must be removed and criminal sanctions will be sought.”

Yet to find the net at this FIFA World Cup, Peru finally struck when it mattered least to see off Australia 2-0 in their last Group C encounter.

Already eliminated, Los Incas set about their task with calmness and patience before breaking the deadlock with their first chance on 18 minutes, Andre Carrillo volleying a splendid effort inside the far post from a cross. It was a wonderful finish and a memorable moment, sparking joy among the sea of Peru supporters decked out in red.

For Australia, that early goal was a damaging blow to their hopes of clinching a spot in the last 16.

The Socceroos needed a victory combined with a France win against Denmark to advance, but the situation in the other game began to matter far less after Paolo Guerrero doubled the deficit five minutes after the break, adding to his assist for the opener, FIFA.com reported.

Although Tim Cahill came on for his first taste of action in three games, Australia remained short of ideas.

Instead, Peru maintained their dominance to soften the blow of their early exit, the South Americans putting in another impressive performance – and this time ending with the goals to show for it.
