The crucial match was supposed to be held on Aug. 3 but was rescheduled for Dec. 14.

Esteghlal lead the table with 24 points and Persepolis are fourth with 20 points and have one game in hand.

Esteghlal, headed by Javad Nekounam, have shown stability in the current season but they have been held two times in their recent matches. Yahya Golmohammadi’s Persepolis have been recently kicked out of the AFC Champions League but they emerged victorious over Havadar in their last match in the league.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has been also confirmed for the derby, which has always been controversial.

The match will be held in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium on Thursday.

Mooud Bonyadifar has been appointed as referee and he will be assisted by Saeid Ghasemi and Alireza Ildorom.

Bijan Heydari is the fourth official.

Esteghlal and Persepolis have met each other 101 times in Tehran derby. Persepolis have won 27 matches, while Esteghlal emerged victorious 26 times and 48 matches ended in draw.

Star-studded Sepahan are also favorites to win the title and the result of the Tehran derby could affect the fate of the Isfahan-based football team.

“I anticipated these days and I knew that we would encounter difficulties. What matters now is our ability to progress with greater strength, concentration, and vitality,” said Golmohammadi on Friday.

Persepolis did not advance to the knockout stage of the AFC Champions League after a 2-1 home defeat against Al Duhail in Tehran. The team’s failure to win in their last six matches has sparked criticism towards the team and the head coach.

Comparing his team with Manchester City, Golmohammadi, whose side won the treble title last season, said, “It’s unrealistic to expect a team like us or Manchester City to stay at the top level and win trophies for many years, unless there is a solid organization and plan in place.

“Despite our success in winning the titles last season, we had a tough time holding onto all our players and had to let go of two or three.

“It is important for us to understand the fans’ anger and transform it towards positive change in our performance,” Golmohammadi added.

Recently, the Iranian media reports suggest that Ivankovic, former head coach of Persepolis, is a candidate to return to the team.

“I have complete faith in Branko’s ability to lead Persepolis, so I would offer him the coaching position tonight if he can come,” Golmohammadi said in response to the rumors.

“This doesn’t bother me at all, even though some people assume I’ll be upset if BronKo’s name is brought up. He was my coach, and many of Persepoli’ recent successes can be traced back to him.

“Nonetheless, I believe that spreading these rumors has nothing to do with football matters. Football fans are already informed, and I will discuss this in the future if required,” he concluded.

Persepolis currently hold the second position in Group E, which consists of strong teams like Al Nassr, Al Duhail, and Estiklol, with a total of eight points from five matches.

Sepahan earned 10 points by securing a valuable victory against Iraqi Al Quwa Al Jawiya, surpassing them and the Kyrgyzstan representative AGMK, but remaining below Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad in group C.

Persepolis have no choice but to face the challenging task of defeating Al Duhail on the Azadi Stadium.

Persepolis, having a significant fan base, have a chance to defeat Al Duhail. However, their progression to the next round remains uncertain as only the top three second-placed teams from the group stage will advance to the knockout stage.

If Sepahan earn points against Al Ittihad (Group C) and Sharjah win with a high number of goals against Al Faisaly or Nasaf Qarshi earns point against Al Sadd (Group B), Persepolis will be eliminated from the competition regardless of their win against Al Duhail.

For the Iranian football, it would be ideal if both Persepolis and Sepahan qualify for the next stage, which is not impossible. Persepolis need to defeat Al Duhail and Sepahan should earn at least one point from Al Ittihad, then the outcome of the two games will determine Iranian teams’ fate.
