Pakistan commemorates great Persian-speaking poet Iqbal

TEHRAN (Iran News) Born on November 9, 1877, Allama Muhammad Iqbal was a prominent South Asian poet, recognized for his influential poetry and thought. He passed away on April 21, 1938.

The birth anniversary of the prominent figure falls on Saturday (today). His work is celebrated as some of the finest poetry of the 20th century.

Iqbal Lahori was not only a poet but also a philosopher, a politician, and a scholar.

He played a significant role in advocating for the cultural and spiritual revival of the Muslim community.

Iqbal is the only non-native Persian poet who has captured the attention of Iranians with his Persian poetry.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said in 2012 that Iqbal Lahori was from Lahore, but his Farsi poems are more famous than the poems he composed in other languages.

He has said Persian poetry is so rich in both form and content that it had even influenced great non-Iranian poets such as the renowned German polymath and writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the philosopher and writer Muhammad Iqbal from Pakistan.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abbas Mousavi took a swipe at US President Donald Trump for “dishonoring” the Persian language by his Farsi tweet, saying a regime that has assassinated the Iranian nation’s hero has no right to voice support for Iranians in Persian.

“Hands and tongues smeared with threatening, sanctioning and terrorizing the #Iranian nation, are not entitled to dishonor the ancient #Persian_language,” Mousavi said in a post on his Twitter account on Sunday, reacting to a tweet in Farsi from Trump.

“By the way, are you actually ‘standing by’ millions of Iranians whose hero you just assassinated or ‘standing against’ them?!” Mousavi said in response to Trump.

Trump’s tweet came after dozens of people protested outside a university in downtown Tehran to denounce officials’ belated confirmation of a Ukrainian passenger plane unintentionally downed outside the Iranian capital.

“To the brave, long-suffering people of Iran: I’ve stood with you since the beginning of my Presidency, and my Administration will continue to stand with you. We are following your protests closely, and are inspired by your courage,” wrote Trump.

The US president had uncharacteristically remained silent as several million Iranians took to streets for days to honor Lt. General Qassem Soleimani who was assassinated on Trump’s order in Baghdad, Press TV reported.

Trump’s reference to the suffering of the Iranian people was also ironic because it has largely been caused by his most draconian sanctions on the country.

On Friday, the Trump administration announced new sanctions targeting Iran’s construction, manufacturing, textiles, mining, aluminum, copper, iron, and steel industries.

Apart from threatening to attack sites “very important” to the Iranian culture, the US president has described Iran as a “terrorist nation” and outraged Iranians by referring to the Persian Gulf as “Arabian”.

Trump’s tweet in Persian also drew a denunciation from Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Abbas Salehi.

“The Persian language is a symbol of the Iranian culture. Until yesterday, the repeated threat of Iranian cultural sites and today dialogue with Iranians in Persian!” he tweeted.

The Persian Language annual forum provides a ground for experts to talk about various aspects of the language which is thought both as a primary and additional foreign language at universities in Russia, Presstv Reported.

Today in Russia people of different ages study the Persian language, not within the framework of academic science. Many are keen on calligraphy and Persian poetry. There are at least 18 centers for the Persian language study in the country. The Persian Language annual forum is initiated by Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, Dr. Mehdi Sanai.

During the previous annual forums, Iranians from different Russian regions were able to form their own teaching classes with the active financial support of Iran.

The number of Iranian studies Programs offered in Russia has increased significantly over the past few years. Linguists say when bilateral relations improve between two countries, they feel the need for learning each other’s languages more than before.

Persian is a member of the Western Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It is spoken by about 110 million people, mainly in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, and also in Uzbekistan, Iraq, Russia, and Azerbaijan.

The travelogue of British geographer George Passman Tate across the regions of Sistan and Baluchestan has been translated into Persian by researcher of Sistan history, Hassan Ahmadi Karviq.
The original English title of the travelogue is ‘The Frontiers of Baluchistan: Travels on the Borders of Persia and Afghanistan.’ It is a monograph authored by Tate with an introduction by British Indian Army officer and diplomat Colonel Sir Henry McMahon who served twice as chief commissioner of Baluchestan.
Baluchistan is an arid desert and mountainous region in southwest Asia. It comprises the Pakistani province of Balochistan, Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan and the southern areas of Afghanistan including Nimruz, Helmand and Kandahar provinces.
Ahmadi Karviq’s translation is released in 200 pages by Mazyar Publications based in Tehran. The publishing house has also released ‘History of Sistan’s Physical Geography,’ authored by Karviq, ISNA reported.
First publication of the original book was in 1909 by the publishing group Witherby & Co. in London.
Born in 1856, Tate was a member of Asiatic Society, an India-based institution for Oriental research. He was a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, UK’s learned society and professional body of geography. His date of death is not recorded.
He was an assistant superintendent employed by the Survey of India, an Indian agency in charge of mapping and surveying. He headed the surveys undertaken by two missions that determined large parts of the borders of Afghanistan, the Baluch-Afghan Boundary Commission of 1895-96 and the Sistan Arbitration Mission of 1903-5.

Surveys
The first of Passman’s surveys was carried out to delimit the so-called Durand Line, the border between Afghanistan and British India (present-day Pakistan) that was negotiated during the 1893 mission to Kabul by Sir Mortimer Durand of the Indian government and codified in an agreement signed by Durand and the ruler of Afghanistan, Amir ‘Abd al-Rahman Khan.
The second survey was on Sistan, a region that straddles eastern Iran and southern Afghanistan (and parts of Pakistan). It was undertaken after the governments in Kabul and Tehran asked Britain to arbitrate the border between the two countries in the region.
The book contains an introduction by Colonel Sir Arthur Henry McMahon (11862-1949), the British commissioner on both missions. Most of the book is taken up by Tate’s account of the Sistan Mission.
He describes the journey overland from Quetta (in present-day Pakistan) to eastern Iran and the region of the marshy Hamun-i Helmand (present-day Daryacheh-ye Hamun) fed by the Helmand (Hirmand) River.
Tate offers vivid descriptions of the harsh and forbidding climate, the famous ‘Wind of 120 Days,’ and the people, economy, and social conditions of the region.
The final chapter is devoted to the Helmand River. The book includes illustrations and two fold-out maps, one showing the route of Tate’s travels, and another the region of the Daryacheh-ye Hamun.
The author describes the work of the surveying parties, but he offers little insight into the politics surrounding the determination of the borders, a topic which, as Sir Henry McMahon phrased it in his introduction, he “felt himself debarred from touching.” Tate filed a number of official reports in which these topics were discussed.
