Trump’s grand ambition: The war Nobel for peace

TEHRAN (Iran News) As the announcement of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner approaches, a notable record of 338 nominations, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations, has been set in recent years. In this context, US President Donald Trump has launched an extensive lobbying campaign, employed controversial statements, and exerted pressure, threatening that if he does not succeed, the event would be considered a great insult to America.

Nominations for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize:

According to the Nobel Peace Prize website, as of March 5 of this year, 338 candidates have been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, comprising 244 individuals and 94 organizations, reflecting a significant increase from the previous year. Statistics show that last year there were 286 nominees, with the highest number of candidates recorded in 2016 at 376.

The deadline for nominations for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize was January 31, 2025, but members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee have the authority to add more names to the list up to one month after this date.

According to a long-standing tradition of the Nobel Committee, the names of the nominees are not disclosed to the media or the nominees themselves. However, there are instances where names become public, either due to media speculation or when certain organizations and individuals announce that they have nominated a specific candidate.

The list of nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize is ultimately published 50 years after the fact, according to the Nobel Foundation’s statutes. The Nobel website has announced that the list of the winner or winners of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be revealed on Friday, October 10, 2025, coinciding with the anniversary of Nobel’s death, and the award ceremony will take place on December 10 in Oslo, Norway.

But in response to the question of who can submit nominations, it can be said: thousands of people; members of governments and parliaments; current heads of state; university professors in history, social sciences, law, and philosophy; former Nobel Peace Prize winners, and others.

Who has been nominated?

While efforts have been made to keep the complete list of nominees secret, some nominators have publicly mentioned their candidates. Among the names revealed this year are the International Criminal Court, NATO, jailed Hong Kong activist Chow Hong-Tung, a Canadian human rights lawyer Irwin Cotler, and Elon Musk.

According to Reuters, Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have also stated that they nominated Donald Trump, the President of the United States. However, their nominations were made in the spring and summer, after the January 31 deadline, which is why they are said to be invalid for the 2025 award.

Analysts say that Trump, like his other policies, has approached the Nobel Peace Prize with a confrontational strategy.

Trump lobbying for the Nobel Peace Prize: Can he win?

Most international media emphasize that Trump is using a confrontational approach to secure the Nobel Peace Prize, just as he has with all his other policies. Trump has repeatedly stated that if he does not win, it would be a “great insult” to the United States.

According to media reports, Donald Trump, eager to win the Nobel Peace Prize, has launched an aggressive lobbying campaign behind closed doors to secure the Nobel Prize this year by any means necessary. Consequently, his promotional efforts have intensified in the days leading up to the upcoming Friday.

The aspirant for the prize stated at the United Nations General Assembly: Everyone says I should receive the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming that he and the United States never received any credit for signing the Abraham Accords, which normalized diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab countries during his first term in 2020.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, who is involved in efforts to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the war in Gaza, claimed during a cabinet meeting in Washington in August that the Nobel Committee should act and award the prize to its leader.

Trump has long claimed that the Nobel Committee has unfairly overlooked him and has repeatedly criticized the awarding of the prize to one of his predecessors. In October 2024, at the Detroit Economic Club, he stated, If I were Obama, they would give me the Nobel Prize in 10 seconds.

Trump claims to have ended at least six or seven wars since returning to the White House in January, including armed conflicts between India and Pakistan in May, the war between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwandan-backed rebels, and border conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia.

A longtime friend of Trump, who is managing this campaign, is working hard to help him achieve his ambition. Steve Witkoff, his special envoy to the Middle East, involved in efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war and the Gaza conflict, stated during a cabinet meeting in Washington in August that the Nobel Committee should finally take action and award the prize to his boss.

In recent days, Trump has indirectly pressured the Nobel Foundation in front of senior US military figures, stating that he does not expect to win the prize: They give it to someone who has done nothing, claiming that such an outcome would be a great insult to America, just days before the committee’s decision is announced.

This remark came less than 24 hours after the US President announced a new effort to end the war in Gaza with a 20-point plan agreed upon with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Friday, Hamas, the Palestinian group that governs Gaza, agreed to release all Israeli captives captured during the October 7, 2023, operation, but stated that other aspects of Trump’s plan would be negotiable.

The issue is serious enough for Trump that, according to some informed officials, Witkoff has privately raised Trump’s proposal for the award in discussions with his European counterparts.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also leveraged all of America’s foreign policy capabilities to drum up support for the Nobel Prize in favor of Trump.

According to media reports in July, while walking down a street in Oslo, the US President had a cold call with Jens Stoltenberg, Norway’s finance minister and former NATO Secretary-General. Norwegian government officials confirmed that the two discussed tariffs as well as the Nobel Prize. This call was initially revealed by a local newspaper in Oslo.

According to Bloomberg, Trump’s campaign lobbying has even extended into the corporate world. Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer, recently praised Trump for managing Operation Warp Speed, which led the development of COVID vaccines in the US, and explicitly claimed that this effort is usually deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Some media outlets have also listed six leaders from various countries who have announced Trump’s nomination for the award, including Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia; Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan; Brice Oligo Goma, the President of Gabon; Hun Manet, the Prime Minister of Cambodia; Olivier Nduhungirehe, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Rwanda; and the government of Pakistan.

While Netanyahu is a proponent of the Nobel Peace Prize for Trump, the extensive attacks by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people have resulted in over 67,000 deaths, the majority of whom are women and children. Additionally, the US and Europe are major arms suppliers to Israel.

Acknowledgment of political pressure

The head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee recently stated to the media that the Nobel Committee has not been subjected to any direct political pressure, but it is evident that several campaigns, both public and private, are underway. He is aware that companies have previously been hired to influence the media and individuals who believe they can impact the committee.

Trump’s campaign lobbying has even infiltrated the corporate world. Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer, recently praised Trump for managing Operation Warp Speed, which led the development of COVID vaccines in the US, and openly claimed that this effort is typically deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Despite all of Trump’s efforts and his promotional campaign for this award, if he does not win on October 10, historians will have to wait half a century to know whether he was ever on the final list for 2025.

Since the first awarding of this prize in 1901, a total of four US presidents have received it: Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Woodrow Wilson in 1919, Jimmy Carter in 2002, and Barack Obama in 2009. Now, Trump believes he can aggressively obtain this award as the fifth US President.

However, Bloomberg reported that some in Norway fear Trump’s potential retaliation if he is disappointed in his quest for the Peace Prize.

105 awards, 139 winners

Since 1901, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 105 times to 139 winners: 92 men, 19 women, and 28 organizations.

Regarding the Peace Prize, Alfred Nobel’s intention specifies that the prize should be awarded to the person who has done the most or the best work for promoting friendship among nations, abolishing or reducing standing armies, and organizing and promoting peace congresses.

According to the Nobel Peace Committee, in the early years of the Peace Prize, up until World War I, it was often awarded to pioneers of organized peace movements. In the interwar years, the focus shifted to active politicians seeking to promote peace, stability, and international justice through diplomacy and international agreements, but awards were also given for humanitarian efforts, such as the prize awarded to Nansen, the High Commissioner for Refugees of the League of Nations.

According to this report, since World War II, the Peace Prize has primarily been awarded for efforts in four main areas: arms control and disarmament, peace negotiations, democracy and human rights, and efforts aimed at creating a more organized and peaceful world. In the 21st century, the Nobel Committee has also accepted efforts to limit the harm caused by climate change and environmental threats resulting from human activities as part of the Peace Prize.

Conclusion

Although the Nobel Foundation states that the winner of this prize receives a medal, a diploma, and 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.19 million), it is likely that global attention matters more to Trump than the other two aspects.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he is deserving of this award, as he has ended seven wars and may also end an eighth if Israel and Hamas agree. Experts have deemed these figures to be highly exaggerated and unrealistic.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, since the onset of the Israel-Gaza war on October 7, 2023, 192 journalists have been killed, with at least 178 of them being Palestinian journalists killed by Israel.

In any case, Trump has shown significant interest and effort in receiving this award, which is why he has been nominated multiple times by himself, individuals within the US, and some foreign politicians since 2018.

An examination of some past awards reveals that they have previously been granted to individuals who faced significant criticism and protests, including the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Aung San Suu Kyi, the former Prime Minister of Myanmar, in 1991, who remained silent regarding the widespread killings of Muslims by the military and extremist groups in her country.

The awarding of the prize by the Nobel Peace Committee in 1973 to Henry Kissinger, the then US Secretary of State, and Le Duc Tho, the leader of North Vietnamese forces, for their joint negotiations on a ceasefire and the end of US involvement in the Vietnam War, as well as the award to Barack Obama in 2009, which occurred just months after his first term began and before the increase of US troops in Afghanistan, has widely caused anger or confusion among nations and critics.

Therefore, critics argue that the Nobel Peace Committee could take similar actions under various political pressures.

Some media outlets have even stated that these days, Norway is holding its breath. Bloomberg, when asked by one senior official, who wished to remain anonymous, about the potential reaction if the President does not win, jokingly said he is considering taking sick leave on October 10.

On the other hand, Oslo has been embroiled in tariff pressures since Trump’s rise to power. The Trump administration had previously imposed a 15% import tax on Norway as part of its global tariff program, causing discontent among Norwegians and resulting in ongoing trade negotiations with Washington.

Ultimately, some observers have speculated that the extensive political pressures and lobbying efforts by Trump may lead to 2025 being the twentieth time that the Nobel Committee does not announce a winner or winners for the Peace Prize.

TEHRAN (Iran News) Addressing a cabinet meeting on Sunday, Pezeshkian hailed the Iranian nation for seeking independence, peace and friendship, and standing against cruelty.

“We have never initiated war and never advised any country to enter war. It has been the United States that has always instigated wars in various parts of the world, including our region”, he said, adding that the US is today keeping the “flames of war burning” in West Asia by supporting the Zionist regime.

He also said that the Zionist regime has sought to foment war in the region by taking acts of aggression, adding that the regime assassinated Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh on the inaugural day of the incumbent Iranian government, as part of its warmongering policies.

Iran exercised restraint in hopes of helping establish a ceasefire in Gaza, but the Zionist regime intensified its crimes and spread its aggression to Lebanon, Pezeshkian noted, his official website reported.

The president also criticized the US and European countries for their hypocritical approach towards the crisis in the region, saying, “If they really want a halt to war and bloodshed, why do they veto proposed UN Security Council resolutions on cessation of hostilities?”

“Today, all regional countries have become certain that the Islamic Republic of Iran is seeking to establish peace and stability in the region, while the Zionist regime, with the support of the US and Western countries, is seeking to escalate crisis and war”, Pezeshkian said.

The president also warned the Zionist regime that it will receive a crushing response if it violates Iran’s security.

If the Israeli regime accepts a ceasefire and stops the massacre of innocent people, it may affect the type and severity of Iran’s response, he said.

The Iranian president also criticized the countries that claim to be champions of human rights but remain silent on the Zionist regime’s killing of thousands of women and children in Gaza and Lebanon, describing that approach as “disgraceful and shameful”.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Iran celebrates World Science Day for Peace and Development 2022 during a week, holding various programs and meetings.

World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated every year on November 10. It was introduced by UNESCO in 2001 to highlight the important role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging and important contemporary issues relevant to science.

A week with the theme of “Science Promotion” is celebrated in Iran from November 15 to 21 by holding various programs. The theme of World Science Day for Peace and Development 2022 is Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.

On this occasion, a week with the theme of “Science Promotion” is celebrated in Iran from November 15 to 21 by holding various programs.

Basic sciences for progress in different fields of medicine, food industry, agriculture, water resources, urban planning and energy, environment, communication, and culture, caused the United Nations on December 2, 2021, to call 2022 the International Year of Basic Sciences in the Service of Sustainable Development.

The role of basic sciences in realizing the sustainable development goals of 2030, once again emphasized the importance of these sciences and although the budget allocated to basic sciences is different in different countries, according to the UNESCO science report, 86 countries in 2021 earmarked less than 10% of the budget to basic sciences and more than 30% to other sciences.

Akram Ghadimi, the head of the Iranian Association for Popularization of Science, told IRNA that since 2012, the association has been celebrating science for peace and development week, which will also be commemorated this year by holding meetings in a different way.

The event commemorating World Science Day for peace and development will be held on November 12 and will host speakers from various institutions, including the UNESCO Regional Office, the UNESCO National Commission, the Ministry of Science, the Vice Presidency of Science and Technology, and university professors.

Also, on Tuesday (November 15), we will have a meeting on the occasion of the International Year of Basic Sciences, with the cooperation of organizations and institutions.

In addition, we will have another meeting in the field of promoting basic sciences and sustainable development with the presence of various speakers from universities, which will be the background of the conference on promoting basic sciences and sustainable development.

This conference focuses on different issues, including the importance of promoting basic sciences in sustainable development (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology), the importance of promoting interdisciplinary sciences in sustainable development, the relationship between basic sciences and other sciences (humanities, medicine, technology, and engineering), the connection of basic sciences with innovation and technology, the role of basic sciences in creating new job opportunities, the role of basic sciences in promoting health and food security, the role of basic sciences in climate issues and environmental protection, changing the methods of teaching basic sciences in order to increase interest in people, policy making in basic sciences and sustainable development, the impact of promoting basic sciences and providing strategies.

The award of the Iranian Association for Popularization of Science is granted every year to the most important institutions and personalities active in the field of science promotion on World Science Day.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Heading an Iranian delegation, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi as Iran’s special representative to proceed Iran’s initiative for solving the differences between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, arrived in Baku on Tuesday night.

Upon his arrival, he announced parts of Iran’s initiative for solving the conflict between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“This visit is part of a periodic visit to those countries in the region that are influential in ending the recent conflicts between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia,” he said, adding, “It aimed at presenting the proposed initiative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to resolve this conflict and achieve lasting peace between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan and, consequently, the region.”

“The framework of Iran’s initiative is prepared and it will be consulted with the officials of the Republic of Azerbaijan during the trip,” Araghchi noted.

“This plan can bring the situation to a lasting peace and end the existing conflicts between the two countries, and, of course, the occupation of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” he added.

He said that the issue of ending the occupation of the territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan is an important element in the proposed initiative of Iran, adding, “Minority rights and humanitarian law are another basis of this plan.”

“Ending the conflict and starting talks with the help of influential, helpful and peace-guaranteeing countries are other elements of Iran’s initiative,” Araghchi said.

He highlighted, “In this regard, we will meet and consult with the officials of regional countries so that with the consultations that will take place, this plan can reach a point where it can be implemented.”

He also called the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan as two friendly, neighboring and close countries, adding, “The two countries enjoy close relation and we have always supported the efforts of the Republic of Azerbaijan to liberate its cities and occupied territories.”

“The territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan and other countries in the region and the inviolability of borders is an important and inviolable principle that must be maintained,” he stressed.

“We have made many efforts for peace in the region in the past and we will continue to do so,” he said, adding, “We hope that during this trip we will be able to reach an agreement with our friends in the Republic of Azerbaijan for implementation of this plan.”

He is scheduled to meet and hold talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Ceyhun Bayramov and other Azerbaijani officials on Wednesday.

After meeting with Azerbaijani officials, Araghchi will travel to Moscow and Yerevan, and then to Ankara to explain the Islamic Republic of Iran’s proposed initiative to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

In an interview with IRNA, Bahador Aminian said political parties, the government and opposition in Afghanistan have no choice but to sit at the negotiating table to secure peace through dialogue and without foreign interference.

“There might be problems on the road to peace, but there is no option other than negotiations,” the Iranian ambassador stressed.

He also reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to facilitate and support the intra-Afghan talks and help the Afghan people and government achieve peace and development.

Aminian expressed hope that establishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan would allow for the promotion of relations between the two neighbors.

In a telephone conversation with President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani in August, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed Tehran’s support for the peace process in Afghanistan under the guidance of the Kabul government, hoping that the intra-Afghan negotiations would yield results with the inclusion of all Afghan groups.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Afghanistan authorities said on Tuesday 900 more Taliban prisoners will be released, as calls grew for the militants to extend a cease-fire on its third and final day.

The pause in fighting – which came into effect on Sunday to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr – was, for the most part, holding across the country, officials said. The government announced plans Sunday to release up to 2,000 prisoners in response to the Taliban’s three-day cease-fire offer, AFP reported.

On Monday they freed 100, and will release another 900, the government said – the biggest group of Taliban prisoners to be freed so far.

The exact number could vary subject to legal procedures, National Security Council spokesman Javid Faisal said.

He said the authorities hoped the Taliban would extend the cease-fire so that delayed peace talks could commence.

“If the Taliban are ready to extend the cease-fire, we are ready to continue the cease-fire too,” Faisal told a news conference.

“We hope they release our prisoners so that intra-Afghan peace talks begin as soon as possible… The future depends on the Taliban’s next move,” he said.

A senior member of the Taliban said the group planned to release about 200 Afghan security force members held captive, without specifying when.

The cease-fire, only the second of its kind in the 19-year-old conflict, has raised hopes of an extended truce that could pave the way for long-awaited peace talks between the Taliban and Afghan government.

“Extend the cease-fire. Save lives,” Shaharzad Akbar, the head of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, said on Twitter.

“End the violence so that we can all focus on making services available to the most vulnerable across the country, on expanding access to human rights, so that we have space to breathe.”

Another senior Taliban source said that the group could extend the cease-fire by seven days if the government speeds up the release of prisoners.

But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said he had no information about an extension.

The Taliban has insisted on the release of their militants as agreed to with the United States in February.

The US-Taliban deal stipulates the Afghan government would release up to 5,000 Taliban prisoners and the militants would free about 1,000 national security personnel.

It also paves the way for all foreign forces to leave the country by next year.

Prior to this week’s releases, Kabul had already freed about 1,000 Taliban inmates, while the militants had let go about 300 Afghan security forces captives.

President Ashraf Ghani has said his government is ready to begin peace negotiations – which had been scheduled to start by March 10 – seen as key to ending the war in the country.

Before the cease-fire started the Taliban had claimed deadly attacks against Afghan forces across the country.

The group denied a gruesome attack on a maternity hospital in Kabul earlier this month when gunmen shot dead mothers, nurses, and newborns.

Ghani has blamed the Taliban and the Daesh terror group for the hospital attack which triggered international outrage.

“Iran’s message for the region and neighbors, especially to the Muslim ones, has always been friendly and brotherly relations,” Nezami told IRNA in Moscow.

Pointing to Iran’s Hormuz peace initiative, known as HOPE, he said that the regional countries’ positive response to the peace plan will help the restoration of stability to the region.

At the United Nations summit in New York in late September, Iran officially unveiled the proposal for regional security. The proposal is officially called the Hormuz Peace Endeavor (HOPE).

Foreign Minister Zarif has invited all regional states to join the peace plan for securing the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

In a tweet in September, Zarif said the initiative entails “dialogue, confidence-building, freedom of navigation, energy security, non-aggression, and non-intervention”.

In a post on his Twitter account on October 15, Zarif renewed Iran’s call to all countries bordering the Persian Gulf to join Tehran to “forge a blueprint for peace, security, stability, and prosperity” in the region.

“Iran sees no benefit in continued war and siege in Yemen, but it welcomes peaceful solutions,” Zarif wrote on his twitter page in the Arabic language on Thursday.

He added that Iran welcomes all initiatives which invite to talks and persuades everyone to use peaceful solutions.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing the Houthi Ansarullah movement.

The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the war has claimed more than 100,000 lives over the past four and a half years.

The war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN says over 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.

The Western-backed military aggression, coupled with a naval blockade, has plunged Yemen into “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis”, according to the United Nations.
