TEHRAN (Iran News) Last week, the Iranian lawmakers started debates on the credentials and backgrounds of 19 individuals on the shortlist for the cabinet of Pezeshkian, with the formal sessions on votes of confidence slated for Wednesday, August 21.

Addressing the parliamentary session this morning, Pezeshkian highlighted the opportunity for “hope and consensus” about rising to the challenges ahead.

Describing his proposed cabinet as the “administration of national consensus”, the president said the administration belongs to all Iranians and is committed to fulfilling the citizenship rights of all people by giving priority to the national interests.

Deploring injustice in the economic, social and political sectors of the country, Pezeshkian said the Iranians have faith in the capabilities of the country and the Revolution.

The president has two hours and a half to address the Parliament in defense of his picks.

Pezeshkian submitted the list of his proposed ministerial picks to the Parliament for a vote of confidence on August 11, 12 days after his swearing-in ceremony.

If any of the proposed ministers fails to win a vote of confidence, the president will have up to three months to name a replacement.

After the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19, Pezeshkian became one of six final candidates singled out by the Constitutional Council from 80 applicants seeking the presidency.

He won the highest number of votes in the first round of the presidential election on June 28 and faced off the runner-up, Saeed Jalili, in the runoff election on July 5.

The physician-turned-politician won the runoff by garnering 53.66% of the votes.

His new administration, the 14th after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, holds office for four years.

Alireza Salimi noted that the Parliament is not going to hold any session on Pezeshkian’s resignation, as the endorsement of his mandate by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei will confirm that he has stepped down as a parliamentarian.

Pezeshkian is going to take the oath of office to be officially inaugurated as the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ninth president in coming weeks.

Pezeshkian was elected to the Parliament as a representative of the northwestern city of Tabriz in the parliamentary elections on March 1.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –IAEA no longer to access images of Iran nuclear sites.Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf says the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will no longer be able to access images of the Iranian nuclear sites because a monitoring deal with the UN nuclear body has expired.

“From May 22 and with the end of the three-month agreement, the agency will have no access to data collected by cameras inside the nuclear facilities agreed under the agreement, and cannot transfer them,” Qalibaf told the parliament Sunday.

He said the Majlis is fully resolved to implement its Strategic Action Plan to Counter Sanctions, which has tasked the administration with suspending extra commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal.

The decision, Qalibaf said, is backed by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

“Discussions were held and decisions made yesterday. The law passed by the Parliament will be implemented. The Leader has underlined the importance of this issue as well,” Qalibaf said.

Last December, Iranian lawmakers overwhelmingly voted in favor of the Strategic Action Plan to Counter Sanctions.

The law tasked the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) with producing and storing at least 120 kilograms of enriched uranium with a 20-percent purity level every year and raising enrichment beyond 20 percent according to the country’s needs.

In February, Iran and the IAEA reached a technical understanding under which Iran agreed to keep the camera footage of its nuclear sites for three months in a goodwill gesture, waiting to see if the other parties to the nuclear deal can bring the US back into full compliance with the accord.

That deadline expired on Saturday, with the prospects of bringing Washington back to compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as the nuclear deal is officially known, looking uncertain.

Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who is the head of the Iranian delegation to the Vienna talks, told Japan’s NHK channel on Friday that the Islamic Republic may consider extending the deal with the IAEA on inspection of its nuclear sites.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi is going to hold a news conference on Sunday afternoon.

Senior diplomats from Iran and the remaining parties to the JCPOA are in Vienna for negotiations on a potential revitalization of the deal, and an effective removal of the US sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.

The United States, under former president Donald Trump, left the JCPOA in May 2018 and restored the economic sanctions that the accord had lifted on Iran.

Tehran responded to the US noncompliance through taking a series of remedial measures envisaged in the nuclear deal if in case the other side did not observe its obligations.

Iran has insisted that it would observe its commitments only after the US removed all its sanctions in one step and Tehran could verify it.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran, Portugal pledge to strengthen parliamentary relations . In a meeting in Lisbon on Friday, Iran’s Ambassador to Portugal, Morteza Damanpak Jami, and Vice-Chairman of the Iran-Portugal Friendship Group Luis Graca emphasized the importance of expanding reciprocal cooperation between the two countries’ legislatures.

Damanpak Jami and Graca discussed ways for the two parliaments to support political, economic, cultural, and academic ties.

Meanwhile, the Iranian ambassador reported on developments in friendly ties between the Iranian and Portuguese parliaments in economic, political, cultural, and scientific fields.

Graca also criticized the United States’ inhumane sanctions against Iran and hoped that the new U.S. administration would take a more optimistic and pragmatic approach to the 2015 nuclear deal and other international issues.

He also expressed hope that the Vienna talks would result in the lifting of sanctions on Iran.

In a noteworthy development in November 2020, Ambassador Damanpak Jami and the Consular Director-General of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs met and emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Damanpak and the Portuguese official discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties during their meeting in Lisbon.

“In a meeting with the Consular Director-General of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we talked about the delay in the extension of the residency permit of Iranians residing in Portugal, the visa certification process and two countries’ cooperation on judicial assistance and criminals extradition,” Damanpak tweeted.

Following the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), a number of Iranians living abroad, especially students studying in foreign countries, who have returned to Iran are facing visa extension issues and are unable to return to those countries to continue their studies.
