Hamas Rejects $15 Billion Aid for Disarming

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The head of the political bureau of the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement Hamas rejected a $15 billion development aid offer aimed at disarming the group.

“Hamas rejected a proposal of carrying out several economic projects, including an airport and a seaport in Gaza for disarming of the movement and changing its strategies towards Israel,” Ismail Haniyeh said, Xinhua reported.

Haniyeh, who had left the Gaza Strip ten months ago and is currently in Qatar, made his remarks to the Qatari news website Lusail in an interview at his office in Doha published on Monday.

The top Hamas leader said that the United States made the offer through a third mediator that he didn’t name, adding that the proposal was part of the US President Donald Trump’s so-called Mideast peace plan.

“The American plan is aiming at establishing an isolated Palestinian entity in the Gaza Strip,” Haniyeh explained, adding that a third party “came to us and made the offer, but we rejected it.”

“Hamas will not give up the land of Palestine and will never hand over its arms or stop the resistance or abandon the right of return,” said Haniyeh, adding that Hamas will never sell Jerusalem al-Quds for money.

In the interview, Haniyeh said that more than 13 years of an Israeli blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip caused more than 45 percent of unemployed and high rates of poverty.

“Thanks to Qatar, who had already donated 1.5 billion US dollars in support for the Gaza Strip over the past ten years,” he said.

Iran Parliament Speaker Underlines Backing Palestinian Resistance

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani highlighted the need for supporting the Palestinian resistance as necessary for foiling enemy plots hatched against Palestine.

Supporting resistance is the only way to counter enemies, Larijani said in a meeting with the secretary general of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance movement, Ziad al-Nakhala, and his accompanying delegation, in the Iranian capital Tehran on Wednesday.

He added that backing Palestine will boost security in the region amid US and Israeli efforts to undermine the resistance front.

“Supporting Palestine will help increase security in the region and the Islamic Republic will always back the Palestinian nation and the cause of resistance,” Larijani said.

“Under the current circumstances, the US and the Zionist regime (Israel) follow a strategy of countering and hindering the axis of resistance. But measures and initiatives by Palestinian people such as the Great March of Return foil such acts,” he added.

The top Iranian parliamentarian criticized certain Arab countries for taking steps to officially normalize ties with Israel and rebuked other Arab states for remaining silent, saying such an approach would undermine the Palestinian cause.

For his part, the Palestinian official praised Iran’s support for the Palestinian nation, saying the Islamic Republic backed Palestine at a time when several Arab countries were normalizing ties with Israel.

He said that today the axis of resistance enjoyed great capacities and was in possession of means to counter Israel’s acts of aggression.

“Undoubtedly, the axis of resistance will emerge victorious in the region and this front will counter any act of aggression through coherence,” he said.

Tensions have been running high near the fence separating the besieged Gaza Strip from the Israeli occupied territories since March 30, 2017, which marked the start of a series of protests dubbed “The Great March of Return.” Palestinian protesters demand the right to return for those driven out of their homeland.

The clashes in Gaza reached their peak on May 14 last, the eve of the 70th anniversary of Nakba Day, or Day of Catastrophe, which coincided this year with Washington’s relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.

More than 190 Palestinians have so far been killed and over 20,000 others wounded in the renewed Gaza clashes, according to the latest figures released by the Gaza Health Ministry.
