President Rouhani received visiting Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Sunday and stressed the importance of close relations between Iran and its eastern neighbor.

“Relations with Pakistan are very important for Iran and we recognize much significance for an expansion of ties between the two countries,” Rouhani said.

The Iranian president added that Tehran welcomed Pakistan’s efforts in seeking to ensure peace and stability in the region. He also called for improved dialogue and cooperation between the region’s Muslim states.

Rouhani added that Tehran and Islamabad should deepen their relations and not allow certain terrorist groups to threaten the security of the two countries’ shared borders.

The Iranian president also expressed gratitude for Islamabad’s solidarity with Tehran regarding the recent crash of Ukrainian Airlines flight 752 in Iran and Washington’s assassination of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani last week.

“The leaders of the United States and Israel, along with leaders of terrorist groups around the world such as Daesh, were happy with the assassination of General Soleimani,” Rouhani said.

“However, people who seek peace and security in the region were saddened [by the incident]’, he added, calling on “all countries to firmly condemn Washington’s act of government terrorism”.

Rouhani stressed that in the “current circumstances” all sides need to “cooperate in deescalating tensions in the region”.

Speaking on his part, Qureshi vowed that Islamabad will not allow his country’s borders to be used to threaten Iran and that Pakistan regards itself as “a partner in the peace and stability” of Tehran.

“We believe that that the borders between the two countries are borders of peace and friendship,” he said, adding that Islamabad was determined to deal with those seeking to create insecurity in the border area.

Iran has been the victim of a number of terrorist attacks in its Southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan originating from Pakistan, which lies east of the province.

In the most recent significant incident last year, an explosives-laden car rammed into a bus carrying a number of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) forces on a road between the cities of Zahedan and Khash, leaving 27 of them dead and 13 others wounded.

According to a statement by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qureshi’s visit to Tehran has been “the first leg of his visit to regional countries with a view to supporting the efforts for de-escalating tensions and promoting a diplomatic way forward”.

Iran-Saudi Conflict

Speaking to reporters at a joint press conference with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran on Sunday, Khan said the main reason for his trip to Iran was reducing recent tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Iran News quotes the reports about Pakistan attempts to prevent Iran-Saudi Conflict.

“The main reason for my trip to Iran is that we do not want a new conflict in the region, especially because we, ourselves, were busy fighting for 15 years and lost 70,000 in the war on terror,” he said.

“Iran is our neighbor and has helped us on important occasions and Saudi Arabia is also our friend and has helped us,” the Pakistani premier stated.

Pakistan does not want any conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia and believes that problems should not lead to war but should be resolved through negotiations, he added.

Disputes and conflicts lead to higher oil prices and eventually to the spread of poverty in the region and human casualties, Khan went on to say.

The remarks came after an Iranian oil tanker was hit by two suspected rockets on Friday off the coast of Saudi Arabia.

The oil tanker was 60 miles (97km) from the Saudi port city of Jeddah when the incident took place, media reports said.

Friday’s incident came against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia after attacks by Yemeni forces on the kingdom’s oil facilities, with Washington and Riyadh claiming Iran was behind them.

The Yemeni Houthi Ansarullah movement immediately took credit for the attacks, but US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo swiftly accused Iran of being behind the assault, without providing any evidence. Tehran categorically rejected the allegations.
