TEHRAN (Iran News) – The secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) sent letters to the ministers of foreign affairs of the member states of the UNSC and members of the International Quartet rejecting the Israeli annexation plan for West Bank.

This initiative came pursuant to the relevant resolution adopted by the OIC Executive Committee convened at the level of foreign ministers on June 10, 2020.

In his letters, OIC secretary-general underscored the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities and called on the UNSC to take the measures necessary to prevent Israeli annexation plans and compel Israel, the occupying power, to halt all its illegal practices and honor its obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention and relevant UN resolutions.

He also conveyed to the members of the International Quartet the content of the said resolution, which requested holding an emergency meeting to save the chances of peace, pursue work to launch a multilateral internationally-sponsored political process to achieve the two-state solution and realize the sovereignty of the State of Palestine within the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds as its capital, in line with international terms of reference, including UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had set July 1 for the start of cabinet discussions on extending “Israeli sovereignty” to Israeli settlements, illegal under international law, in the occupied West Bank and annexing outright the Jordan Valley.

Netanyahu’s scheme however has not gone exactly as planned due to increasing rifts within his ruling coalition.

The Palestinians have already threatened to cancel existing peace agreements if Netanyahu moves forward with his plan, while the European Union foreign policy chief said annexation would be a violation of international law and force the bloc to “act accordingly”. The UN’s Middle East envoy said such a step would “ignite” the region.

In a statement on Friday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi dismissed a communiqué that certain leaders of Arab and Persian Gulf countries have issued at the OIC meeting to raise groundless allegations against the Islamic Republic.

He also deplored Saudi Arabia’s move to take advantage of hosting the OIC summit in the holy city of Mecca to foment division among the Muslim countries.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is confident that such statements do not reflect the real views of all OIC members, the spokesman noted, adding, “Saudi Arabia took political and instrumental advantage of the auspicious month of Ramadan and the holy city of Mecca to make accusations against the Islamic Iran from the mouth of some participants in the conference.”

Mousavi also denounced the Riyadh regime for adopting a wrong approach and creating division among the Islamic and regional countries – a favorite move for Israel – instead of taking the International Quds Day’s opportunity and using the OIC summit to support the rights of Palestinian people and the city of al-Quds.

“We deem the Saudi efforts to mobilize the views of neighboring and Arab countries a continuation of the indecisive process that the US and the Zionist regime are pursuing against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he deplored.

Mousavi finally expressed the hope that Saudi Arabia’s failure to support the cause of Palestine and also the wrong approach adopted by certain Islamic countries in the region would be compensated at the OIC summit in Mecca and that the participants would not allow the issue of Palestine and al-Quds to be overshadowed by such “divisive policies and strategic mistakes.”

“The Zionist regime of Israel’s old objective is to make the Islamic and Arab countries neglect their main and common enemy and to pit them against each other,” the Iranian spokesman concluded.

In comments on Thursday, head of Iran’s delegation at the OIC meeting dismissed the accusations made by Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister that Tehran was interfering in the internal affairs of others.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran rejects the (Saudi) allegations made at the (OIC) summit, and hopes, as a founder of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, that the summit held in the holy month of Ramadan would strengthen unity of the Islamic Ummah (community) and concentrate on the Islamic world’s overriding subject, namely the issue of Palestine,” Reza Najafi had announced.

In an address to a ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the 14th OIC summit on Wednesday, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Ibrahim Abdulaziz Al-Assaf had called on Islamic nations to reject Iran’s (alleged) interference in the internal affairs of the other countries.

In a Friday phone conversation with Mevlut Cavusoglu, the foreign minister of Turkey which is the rotating president of the OIC, Zarif called for appropriate reaction of Muslim states to this heinous crime.

IRAN NEWS POLITICAL DESK

The Iranian foreign minister pointed to the New Zealand terrorist attack as well as the Israeli soldiers’ recent insult to Muslims’ mosque in the occupied Palestine, and proposed that the OIC immediately holds an emergency meeting at the level of leaders or foreign ministers.

Zarif had earlier called for an end to Islamophobia in Western countries, saying, “Iranians are deeply shocked and saddened by Christchurch terror today. But we’re not surprised. Banned from travel to the US, and not allowed to abide by our faith if attending French schools, we Iranians know too well what bigotry and hatred of Islam augur.”

An Australian gunman identified as Brenton Tarrant killed 49 people and wounded more than 20 during Friday prayers at two New Zealand mosques in the country’s worst ever mass shooting.

Reacting to the terrorist attack, President Hassan Rouhani says the Friday massacre of Muslim people in New Zealand once again highlighted the need for an all-out international fight against Islamophobia fueled by certain Western governments.

In a Friday message, the Iranian president condemned the “terrorist and racist” attack on Muslim worshippers, and described the massacre as a “barbaric and painful” incident which broke the hearts of all Muslim people in the world, especially the Iranian nation.

At least one gunman killed 49 people and wounded more than 40 during Friday prayers at two New Zealand mosques in the country’s worst ever mass shooting, which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern condemned as terrorism.

“This barbaric crime, which resulted in the martyrdom and injury of a number of innocent and defenseless worshippers, is another proof of the need for an all-out fight against terrorism and hate-mongering toward other religions and ethnic groups, and the Islamophobia which is common in the West, and unfortunately fueled by certain Western governments,” Rouhani said in his message.

“This crime indicated that terrorism is still among the important issues of the world, and needs an integrated fight and a united approach by all countries against violence and extremism in any part of the world,” he noted.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is still committed to decisive fight against terrorism and racism, and is sure that, thanks to the unity and solidarity of Muslim people, such blind and aimless plots by the enemies would result in nothing but further disgrace for them,” he added.

Rouhani also called on the international community, particularly Muslim states, to show serious reaction to these anti-human crimes, and “disgrace the overt and covert sponsors of such moves.”

Elsewhere, he said that the issue of Palestine should remain top on the agenda of OIC, adding, “we do not allow any new developments in the Islamic world to divert attention from addressing the most important and oldest issue we are facing, namely, Palestine.”

Saying that Washington’s decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem is part of a plot dubbed as ‘Deal of the Century’, the Iranian official expressed worry over some OIC members’ indifference towards the Palestinian nation’s rights.

Dehghani went on to say that Iran opposes any decision in OIC which would recognize the Israeli regime as a country.
