Tehran sold an average of 1.56 million barrels a day during the first three months of the year, almost all of it to China and its highest level since the third quarter of 2018, according to data company Vortexa.

Iran’s success in exporting its crude underscores the difficulties facing the US and the EU as they seek to build up pressure on Tehran.

“The Iranians have mastered the art of sanctions circumvention,” said Fernando Ferreira, head of the geopolitical risk service at the Rapidan Energy Group in the U.S.

In Tehran, Tasnim News Agency reported on Wednesday that the country’s oil industry had found ways to get around sanctions.

Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Oji stated last month that oil exports had generated more than $35 billion in the preceding year. On another occasion, he said that while Iran’s enemies wanted to stop its exports, “today, we can export oil anywhere we want, and with minimal discounts”.

Earlier this month, The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said that Iran produced 3.25 million barrels per day (bpd) of oil in March 2024, 20,000 bpd more than the previous month.

According to the EIA report, Iran’s oil production in February stood at 3.23 million bpd.

Iran has produced an average of 3.2 million barrels of oil per day in the first quarter of this year, based on the report.

Iran’s oil production in the first quarter of this year has increased by 50,000 bpd compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year and by 630,000 barrels per day compared to the first quarter of 2023.

Iran produced 2.6 million bpd of oil in the first quarter of the previous year and 3.18 million bpd in the fourth quarter of the mentioned year.

With an increase of 630,000 barrels in oil production over the past year, Iran had the highest production rise among OPEC members, according to EIA.

Gabon, Nigeria, and Venezuela have been the only OPEC members to increase production over the past year. The production of Gabon increased by 10,000 bpd, Nigeria by 40,000 bpd, and Venezuela by 90,000 bpd.

OPEC oil production in the first quarter of last year was 27.380 million bpd, which has decreased by 720,000 barrels to 26.660 million in the first quarter of 2024.

Based on the EIA report, Iran maintained its position as the organization’s third oil producer in March.

Abbas Asadrouz made the remarks in a press conference held on the sidelines of the 26th International Oil, Gas, Refining and Petrochemical Exhibition of Iran (Iran Oil Show 2022) on Sunday.

“Given the Oil Ministry’s target of the pre-sanction level of oil export, our whole attention is toward the infrastructure in this due, including storage facilities and pipelines”, the official further underlined.

Emphasizing that the IOTC does not have a problem in terms of infrastructure for increasing exports, Asadrouz stressed: “Evidence shows that Iran’s oil exports have increased significantly and the export operations are underway in oil terminals.”

Saying that Iranian Oil Terminals Company has done its job well in the field of oil storage under the sanctions condition; about how much the storage capacity of crude oil is to be increased, he said that the storage capacity of crude oil in Kharg oil terminal is planned to be increased by 4.2 million barrels.

Kharg Island is a continental island in the Persian Gulf in the south of Iran. The island is located 25 kilometers off the coast of Iran and 483 kilometers northwest of the Strait of Hormuz. Administered by the adjacent coastal Bushehr Province, Kharg Island provides a seaport for the export of oil and extends Iranian territorial sea claims into the Persian Gulf oil fields.

Due to its close distance to oilfield regions, its good offshore position, and suitable depth for gigantic oil vessel berthing, Kharg Island oil terminal has been recognized as one of the country’s most suitable places for crude oil export and loading sites.

High co-op with knowledge-based companies on agenda

Answering to the Tehran Times about the approach of the company for materializing the motto of the present Iranian calendar year (Knowledge-Based and Job-Creating Production), the managing director said that IOTC has long-term and short-term plans to this end, and relations and high cooperation with the knowledge-based companies is on the agenda.

It should be mentioned that Iranian Oil Terminals Company signed some contracts with a number of Iranian companies in a ceremony before the Sunday press conference.

The mentioned contracts were on domestic production of some major and strategic equipment used in the oil terminals.

Signing these contracts (on the sidelines of the oil show) is a big step toward materializing the slogan of the year.

Iran Oil Show is among the most significant oil and gas events in the world in terms of the number of participants and its diversity.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Considering progress in Goreh-Jask oil pipeline project, the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) will be able to export its first oil cargo from Jask terminal by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2021), said the managing director of Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEC).

According to Touraj Dehqani, the development of the project is going on uninterrupted and the project has reached over 50 percent of physical progress, IRNA reported.

“With the main pumping stations of the project becoming operational, we will witness the beginning of the oil transfer from Goreh to Jask by the end of the year,” Dehqani said.

“Of course, like other parts of the project, Jask export terminal itself has developed and progressed,” he added.

The official added if the required storages at the Jask terminal are not addressed by the end of the year, alternative options such as the use of single-point-mooring (SPM) storing the oil will be on the agenda.

The PEDEC’s goal is to export the first oil cargo from Jask oil terminal in the last month of the current Iranian calendar year (starting on February 19, 2021).

Goreh-Jusk oil pipeline project was inaugurated in late June by President Hassan Rouhani.

The pipeline will transfer one million barrels of heavy and light crude oil per day to Jask oil terminal in the southern province of Hormuzgan to be exported.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the project, Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said it was one of the most strategic projects in the Rouhani administration.

Zanganeh said a total of $300 million has so far been invested in the project while another $800-$850 million is needed for its full operation.

“We hope that exports from Jask will begin as the government’s most strategic project by the end of this [Iranian] year,” the minister noted.

Director General of Chabahar Free Trade Zone Organization (FTZ) Abdul Rahim Kordi said on Sunday the Chabahar route goes through the Baltic Sea to Russia’s Saint Petersburg and then through the Volga River to Astrakhan from where it travels via the Caspian Sea to Anzali in northern Iran.

It then travels further south across the lengths of the Iranian territory to Chabahar on the Sea of Oman and then through the Arabian Sea to the Nhava Sheva port in India’s Mumbai.

Speaking in a local meeting, Kordi added Chabahar will become busier once a 580-kilometer railway connecting it to Zahedan, near the eastern Iranian border, comes on line.

It will be more than a half shorter than the traditional Suez canal taken by large ships to deliver cargoes from Europe to Asia, he said, adding the Chabahar route will decrease the time needed from 38 days to 14-16 days.

Noting that the Iranian government has been awash with requests for foreign investment in Chabahar, Kordi added, India has been a major stakeholder in development projects in Chabahar as the country seeks to facilitate its trade access to Afghanistan and other landlocked countries in the Central Asia region.

“Being present in Chabahar has become so popular that we currently lack the capacity to process some of the excess investments in this region,” Kordi added.

Referring to Chabahar as the sole Iranian ocean port, the official stressed its significance on the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman shores and in North-South Corridor.

He described Iran as a terminal in the world, noting that the port of Chabahar can be the connecting point of the North-South and East-West corridors.

IRNA and Press TV contributed to this story.

Rouhani made the comment after he launched an oil pipeline project which will enable Iran to export its oil using a route other than the narrow waterway at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.

“What is strategic about this project is that many countries in the region have managed to find a second way so that they can export their oil using other routes whenever the Strait of Hormuz faces danger,” Rouhani said addressing a ceremony to inaugurate the project.

“This is a strategic decision and an important step for Iran that will secure the continuation of our oil exports,” he said in a televised speech.

Rouhani said Iran aimed to export 1 million barrels per day (bpd) of oil by March from Jask, a port on Iran’s Sea of Oman coast, just south of the Strait of Hormuz.

“This move will assure our oil buyers that Iran will continue exporting oil if the Strait is closed,” he said.

The 1,000-km pipeline will bring oil from Goreh in Bushehr port city in the Persian Gulf to Jask.

The Kharg Island terminal in the Persian Gulf is currently Iran’s main terminal, accounting for 90 percent of its oil exports. To reach Kharg, tankers must pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

With the launch of the pipeline from Goreh to Jask, the country’s oil exports will no longer be linked to the Hormuz Strait, which will make Jask strategically important as the country’s second-largest crude oil export terminal.

Hit by US sanctions, Iran’s oil exports are estimated at 100,000 to 200,000 bpd, down from more than 2.5 million bpd that Iran shipped in April 2018. The Islamic Republic’s crude production has halved to around 2 million bpd.

The strait is a narrow channel at the mouth of the Persian Gulf through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes from West Asian producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond.

Reuters and Xinhua contributed to this story.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani said Iran no longer relies on the Strait of Hormuz for oil exports as a new oil terminal created on the Sea of Oman is opening a new export route for its crude.

The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important bottleneck for oil, where almost a fifth of the world’s crude or about 20 million barrels per day (bpd) passes through to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond, Press TV reported.

Shipping through the narrow strait, with the lane just three kilometers wide in either direction at its narrowest point, has become fraught since the US began building its military presence in the Persian Gulf.

Iran is currently building a $1.8-billion oil pipeline to its port of Jask outside the mouth of the Persian Gulf as part of plans to protect its exports against potential problems in the region and to boost shipments of Caspian oil.

The approximately 1,000-kilometer pipeline will bring oil from Goreh in Bushehr to Jask, making it strategically important as the country’s second-largest crude oil export terminal.

The Kharg Island terminal deep in the Persian Gulf is currently Iran’s key outlet, accounting for 90 percent of its oil exports. To reach Kharg, tankers must pass the Strait of Hormuz.

“We are now building a 1,000-kilometer pipeline from Goreh to Jask, and our oil exports are no longer connected to the umbilical cord of the Strait of Hormuz. This is a first in Iran’s history,” Rouhani told a governors’ meeting in Tehran late Tuesday.

Rouhani said that the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei had told him that the project was “the most strategic work” his administration had done.

“This pipeline, through which we will be transporting our oil to Jask and the Sea of Oman, is a great, huge and unique work in the history of Iran,” the president added.

The new terminal is close to Chabahar which Iran is developing in cooperation with other countries, most notably India.

Chabahar is about to become a key link in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a multimodal network of ship, rail and road routes to move freight between India, Iran, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia, and Europe.

It offers a key trade and transport corridor that presents a cheaper and shorter alternative to the traditional route through the Suez Canal.

The terminal would be connected to Iran’s Caspian Sea port of Neka, enabling Tehran to boost shipments of oil from Caspian producers.

Iran’s oil industry is on the frontline of the fight against the United States’ maximum pressure in a bid to reduce exports to zero.

The head of Iran’s Plan and Budget Organization, Mohammad Baqer Nobakht, said earlier this month that the government planned to run the country without oil. Iran, he said, earned just $8.9 billion from the sale of oil and related products in the last fiscal year, down from a peak of $119 billion less than a decade ago.

A boom in manufacturing has already seen Iranian companies looking beyond the domestic market to export an increasingly diverse range of goods, turning the devaluation of the rial to their advantage.

In 2019-20, non-oil exports totaled $41.3 billion, exceeding oil exports for the first time in Iran’s modern history. Around half of Iran’s non-oil exports were reportedly in manufactured goods, meaning that Iran’s factories earned more than double what the country’s oil rigs earned in export revenue last year.

Iranian consumer goods and industrial products—ranging from cookies to stainless steel—are exported widely within the Middle East as well as further afield to China, Russia, and Europe.

Manufacturing is also a major contributor to employment. Between March 2018 and December 2019, the manufacturing sector added 472,000 jobs.

The pivotal role of the sector in Iran’s economic resilience has not escaped the attention of the Trump administration. In January, Washington imposed new sanctions, targeting Iran’s construction, manufacturing, textiles, mining, aluminum, copper, iron, and steel industries, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

The coercive measures affect the private sector and millions of blue-collar workers in Iranian factories, disproving the US government’s claim that the sanctions target the state and not ordinary people.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A flotilla of five tankers carrying Iranian fuel for gasoline-starved Venezuela is approaching the Caribbean, with the first vessel expected to reach the South American country’s waters on Sunday, according to Refinitiv Eikon tracking data.

Iran is supplying about 1.53 million barrels of gasoline and alkylate to Venezuela, according to both governments, sources and calculations made by TankerTrackers.com based on the vessels’ draft levels.

Washington is considering measures in response, according to a senior US official, who did not elaborate on any options being weighed.

The US recently beefed up its naval presence in the Caribbean for what it said was an expanded anti-drug operation. But a Pentagon spokesman, Jonathan Hoffman, said on Thursday he was not aware of any operations related to the Iranian cargoes.

“We have continued to say that Iran and Venezuela – both two outliers in the international order – (are) clearly violating international sanctions on both nations with this transaction,” he told reporters.

Venezuela’s defense minister said its military will escort the Iranian tankers once they reach the nation’s exclusive economic zone.

Iran-flagged tanker Fortune, the first in the flotilla, was approaching the Caribbean Sea on Friday. It has been navigating with its satellite signal since it passed the Suez Canal earlier in May. The four other vessels are following the same route across the Atlantic Ocean, the Eikon data showed, Reuters reported.

The OPEC-member country desperately needs fuel for up to 1,800 gasoline stations that have been partially closed for weeks due to insufficient supply from state-run PDVSA’s refineries, which until March worked at about 10 percent of their joint capacity of 1.3 million barrels per day (bpd).

PDVSA’s gasoline output is now limited to a single facility, the Amuay refinery, but most fuel produced is low octane as most of the country’s alkylation units are out of service, according to company sources. Imported alkylate could improve the quality of domestic gasoline.

PDVSA did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Venezuela was consuming 170,000 bpd of gasoline before coronavirus-related lockdown measures. Fuel sales at stations declined to about 40,000 bpd due to rationing, according to analysts.

Over a decade of mismanagement and lack of staff – combined with US sanctions that since 2019 have limited imports – have left Venezuela’s refineries in poor condition. Shipments of equipment in flights by Iran’s Mahan Air have arrived in Venezuela in recent weeks to start repair work.

The US Department of the Treasury this week blacklisted the Chinese firm that provided the refinery parts. Beijing called the sanctions “illegal”.

US West Texas Intermediate crude fell 67 cents on Friday to settle at $33.25 a barrel, paring about half earlier losses of more than five percent. Global benchmark Brent settled at $35.13, down 93 cents on the day.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami said that any US harassment of Iranian oil tankers will be met with a decisive response.

“Any disruption for tankers is against international regulations and security,” Hatami said on Wednesday referring to the release of some reports on the threat of US officials to harass tankers carrying Iran’s fuel to Venezuela.

“Both international organizations and countries that are sensitive to water regulations and security must react to this issue,” he added.

Stating that any US harassment of Iranian tankers will be met with a decisive response, Hatami said, “It is a kind of piracy.”

“Of course, our policy is quite clear, and we have made it clear that we will not tolerate any harassment,” he stressed, adding, “The Americans and others know that we will certainly not hesitate to react to this issue, and if the harassment intensifies and continues, it will certainly face a decisive response.”

Unconfirmed reports and tanker monitoring groups said at least five Iranian-flagged tankers are transporting fuel to Venezuela through the Atlantic Ocean despite US sanctions targeting both Tehran and Caracas.

The US Navy is said to have deployed its USS Detroit (LCS-7), USS Lassen (DDG-82), USS Preble (DDG-88), and USS Farragut (DDG-99) to the Caribbean along with its patrol aircraft Boeing P8-Poseidon for a possible encounter with the Iranian vessels.

In a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday, Zarif described “the illegal, dangerous and provocative US threats [against the Iranian tankers]” as a form of piracy and a big threat to international peace and security. He then highlighted the responsibility of “the US administration with regard to the consequences of any illegal move, reiterating Iran’s right to adopt appropriate and necessary measures in the face of such threats.

Tehran also summoned Swiss ambassador whose country represents US interests in Tehran, to voice the country’s vehement protest at US provocations.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for boosting the production of oil byproducts and minimizing exports of crude oil.

In a phone conversation with Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh, the president added the country has been provided with the opportunity to reach this goal given the government’s economic plans over the past 12 months and the progress made in their implementation without relying on oil revenues in the national budget, which is an unprecedented achievement in the history of the country, Mehr News Agency reported.

Rouhani said accelerating the implementation of the Oil Ministry’s plans to increase production of oil byproducts and prevent the overseas sales of crude oil can minimize the damage of the global market’s severe fluctuations and drop in oil prices on Iran’s economy.

Rouhani described the current Iranian calendar year (which started on March 20) as the year of preparing and completing the country’s major development and infrastructure projects, calling on the oil minister to draw up the ministry’s plans in such a way as to guarantee the timely completion of the country’s large-scale oil projects this year.

“If there are problems or obstacles in the way of implementing these plans, they must be immediately referred to the headquarters formed for this purpose in the President’s Office,” he stressed.

Zanganeh also presented a report on the progress made in the implementation of Iran’s oil projects, the latest developments in the global oil market and oil exchange with other countries.

The president also held separate phone talks with Health Minister Saeed Namaki and Economy Minister Farhad Dejpasand, discussing the latest developments in the country, including the battle against the coronavirus pandemic and the economic development plans that are aimed to help support people amid the crisis and accelerate the process of curbing the disease.
