TEHRAN (Iran News) – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei says enemies are seeking to deprive Iranians of peaceful nuclear energy, stressing once again that the Islamic Republic has never sought nuclear weapons.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a meeting via video conference with thousands of people from Iran’s East Azarbaijan Province on Thursday, marking the anniversary of the popular uprising of the people of Tabriz, which took place on February 18, 1978.

“You see how oppressively the enemy front is focusing on the issue of our nuclear energy. They [the enemy] impose sanctions [on us] because of a nuclear energy [program] that they know is peaceful. And whatever they may say about Iran being a certain amount of time away from producing a [nuclear] bomb is nonsensical and meaningless,” the Leader said.

“They know we are not seeking that; that we are not looking for a nuclear weapon. We are looking to benefit from nuclear energy in peaceful ways. They know this. [But] They do not want the Iranian nation to achieve such an outstanding scientific progress and that’s why they are pressuring us,” Ayatollah Khamenei added.

The Leader said that Iran will urgently need nuclear energy, and that if the country fails to take action today, it will be too late in 20 years.

The Leader warned that enemies have been attempting to make the Iranians, especially the youth, stray from the path of the Islamic Revolution using two tactics: economic pressure and a smear campaign of lies and allegations against the pillars of the Revolution through Western media.

“The enemies are using two tools to divide the people and the establishment and to engineer the people’s views and thoughts: economic hostility and media enmity,” said the Leader, calling on the nation and the youth to counter the two conspiracies.

The Leader added that the enemies “level accusations against the centers that play a role in the Revolution’s progress.”

Ayatollah Khamenei explained that economic pressure can be foiled through hard work at home, diplomatic efforts and neutralization of the sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.

The Leader praised the Iranian negotiators for working on the diplomatic front to persuade the Westerners to lift the sanctions placed on the nation.

“However, the major task is to neutralize the sanctions through [engaging in] domestic production and economic activities on the one side, and foiling the enemy’s media campaign and mudslinging, on the other,” Ayatollah Khamenei noted.

Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the role of the people in the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

“The Islamic Revolution emerged victorious thanks to the presence of the Iranian nation and not guns and political ploys and playing,” the Leader said.

The Leader praised as “astonishing” the infrastructural progress that the country has made in the years that ensued the Islamic Revolution.

As a case in point, Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to Iran’s scientific achievements in the past four decades and said the country’s growth rate has been “multiple times higher than that of the rest of the world.”

The Leader said the Iranian nation’s perseverance has been fruitful not just inside the country but also across the region.

“You witness today that the resistance movement in regional countries is growing and the grandeur of America and [global] arrogance is broken. The nations are speaking out against America. We should appreciate this and keep up the Revolution’s progress,” the Leader noted.

Ayatollah Khamenei also hailed the massive participation of the Iranian people in recent celebrations marking the 43rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the former US-backed Pahlavi regime, despite the coronavirus pandemic, economic problems and the campaign of lies launched by foreigners.

He said the Islamic Revolution’s goals were bringing about social justice, power, a Muslim society and, ultimately, a modern Islamic civilization, calling on everyone to make efforts toward fulfilling the objectives.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Ambassador to the Vienna-based international organizations Kazem Gharibabadi said that the acquisition of nuclear weapons by Israel is a serious threat to the security and stability of the region and the world.

He made the remarks in the Quarterly meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday evening, Mehr News Agency (MNA) reported.

Gharibabadi explained Iran’s stance on the West Asia (Middle East) nuclear weapons free zone and the Zionist regime’s nuclear capabilities.

Referring to the 50th anniversary of the NPT and regretting that this treaty is still a long way from globalization, he said, “Among those outside the treaty, some have made their accession conditional on the creation of a ‘special atmosphere’ and others are reluctant to do so because of the threat posed by nuclear weapons states.”

“Undoubtedly, after the failure to agree on the final outcome of the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in 2015, simply because of the three countries’ protests in support of a non-NPT member, the NPT Review Conference in 2021 will be a strong milestone for the world community to see if multilateralism is still effective in the field of arms control and disarmament,” he added.

Noting that the issue of the NPT and the nuclear-weapon-free Middle East should be addressed without prejudice, he said, “We believe that ignoring such an important issue directly affects regional and international peace and stability, challenges global arms control norms, and undermines the validity and sustainability of the current disarmament and arms control structure, including the IAEA and the safeguards regime,” Gharibabadi highlighted.

“That’s why we emphasize that ignoring the review of the status of the nuclear facilities and the activities of the Israeli regime, especially in the absence of IAEA safeguards, is a very dangerous step,” he added.

He went on to say, “All the countries except regime of Israel in the the West Asia are members of the NPT and has pledged to accept the IAEA’s comprehensive safeguards. Therefore, the regime’s covert acquisition of nuclear weapons is a serious threat to the security and stability of the region and the world.”

Noting that opposition to the Israeli nuclear issue means rejecting all practical steps taken to create a nuclear-weapon-free West Asia region, he said, “We strongly believe that by ignoring legitimate regional and international concerns about the Israeli regime’s refusal to adhere to the NPT, it and its supporters are deliberately violating all international norms and regulations.”

“The immediate and unconditional accession of the Israeli regime to the NPT and the placement of all its nuclear materials, activities and facilities under the Agency’s comprehensive safeguards are necessary steps to alleviate the current nuclear crisis in the West Asia,” Gharibabadi added.

“The Agency should not be influenced by political considerations in this regard and should not, on behalf of one of the parties in the region, describe the political situation in the region in its reports,” he stressed.

“Professional logic therefore requires the Agency to take steps to implement safeguards throughout the West Asia,” he added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – State-owned energy giant EDF on Saturday began shutting down the oldest nuclear power plant of France after 43 years in operation.

EDF (Électricité de France) said it had disconnected one of two reactors at Fessenheim, along the Rhine near France’s eastern border with Germany and Switzerland, at 2:00 a.m. (0100 GMT) in the first stage of the complete closure of the oldest nuclear plant of France, AFP reported.

The second reactor is to be taken offline on June 30 but it will be several months before the two have cooled enough and the used fuel can start to be removed.

The removal of the fuel is expected to be completed by the summer of 2023 but the plant will only be fully decommissioned by 2040 at the earliest.

Shutting down Fessenheim became a key goal of anti-nuclear campaigners after the catastrophic meltdown at Fukushima in Japan in 2011.

Experts have noted that construction and safety standards at Fessenheim, brought online in 1977, fall far short of those at Fukushima, with some warning that seismic and flooding risks in the Alsace region had been underestimated.

Despite a pledge by ex-president Francois Hollande just months after Fukushima to close the plant, it was not until 2018 that President Emmanuel Macron’s government gave the final green light.

“This marks the first step in France’s energy strategy to gradually rebalance nuclear and renewable electricity sources while cutting carbon emissions by closing coal-fired plants by 2022,” Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said earlier this week.

France will still be left with 56 pressurized water reactors at 18 nuclear power plants – only the United States has more reactors, at 98 – generating an unmatched 70 percent of its electricity needs.

The government confirmed in January that it aims to shut down 12 more reactors nearing or exceeding their original 40-year age limit by 2035 when nuclear power should represent just 50 percent of France’s energy mix.

But at the same time, EDF is racing to get its first next-generation reactor running at its Flamanville plant in 2022 – 10 years behind schedule – and more may be in the pipeline.

Located on a land areas as large as 14 ha, this giant project was fully funded by the private sector, costing over €6.5 million.

The solar power plant was constructed in four months and then connected to the nationwide power grid.

With the operation of this power plant, Zanjan province was listed among 27th province in the country in the field of equipping with solar power plant.

By generating more than 111 gigawatt/hour energy annually, this solar power plant, moreover contributing to meet the electricity demand in peak hours, is able to reduce consumption of fossil fuels as much as 3.95 million cubic meter.

Accordingly, launch of solar power plant in Zanjan province generated direct and indirect employment opportunities for 100 and 500 job-seeking people respectively.

Ali Akbar Salehi made the remarks Tuesday in an interview with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

He called upon the European countries to take more practical steps regarding the establishment of Special-Purpose Vehicle (SPV) and warned that Iran can immediately increase the volume and degree of uranium enrichment.

Some of the limitations that Iran has accepted in JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) has no effect on the country’s nuclear industry since Iran is still enriching uranium, he said, adding, “the difference is that we enriched 4 to 20% in the past and now the figure has reached 3.67%.”

“We do not need 20% enrichment for now, because we have enough resources of 20% enriched uranium for some next years. And if we produce some, we should store them.”

He went on to say that the volume of enriched uranium is among Iran’s commitments, however, “it is not a limitation, since if we wish we can remove this 300kg limit.”

Iran nuclear chief added that currently, activities are limited to the point that it doesn’t reach 300kg, “but if we withdraw from JCPOA, we can exceed this volume and use it for production of the required fuel for Arak reactor.”

The difference between current conditions and those before signing JCPOA is that now Iran is constructing two nuclear power plants, he said, highlighting, after inking JCPOA Tehran established scientific relations with European countries and obtained required know-hows for boosting peaceful nuclear activities.
