Strong quake hits northwest Iran at night, kills 3 and injures hundreds

TEHRAN (Iran News) –A strong earthquake with a magnitude 5.9 hit the city of Khoy and surrounding areas in northwestern Iran on Sunday night, leading to the death of at least 3 people and the wounding of hundreds of others.

The quake happened at 21:44 p.m. local time in northwestern Iran, the region bordering neighboring Turkey.

The earthquake was triggered at a depth of seven kilometers under the ground.

Cold weather and darkness of the night have made rescue efforts highly difficult.

The number of deaths and injuries are expected to rise. The ISNA news agency put the number of injuries at 447.

A number of officials, including the interior minister and rescue officials, have flown to the city of Khoy to monitor rescue efforts.

The quake happened after a tremor measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit the region on January 19.

Reportedly, officials from the Energy Ministry were trying to connect the electricity that has been cut in some areas.

People are spending the night outdoors or in their cars in the cold winter. So far more than 10 aftershocks have struck the quake-hit areas.

According to ISNA, the Koy hospital in has also suffered cracks.

The news agency that two cities and 87 villages are affected by the quake.

The strong tremor has been felt in surrounding provinces as well.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – In less than 48 hours, troops, equipment transferred to drill field in northwest Iran. In less than 48 hours troops and equipment were transferred to the drill field in northwest Iran, the commander of the Army’s northwestern regional base has said, IRNA reported on Friday.

The Army started a drill, codenamed Fatehan Kheybar, in northwestern Iran on Friday.

“According to the orders we receive from the command hierarchy, we will conduct exercises in different places, and for the Fatehan Kheybar exercise, equipment and forces were transferred to the area in less than 48 hours,” Commander Ali Hajiloo explained.

“The drill was carried out using part of the power of the major units in the northwest of the country,” he added.

Brigadier-General Hajiloo said units based in the provinces of Qazvin, Markazi and Tehran as well as Ground Force UAV unit and Army Aviation Force were deployed in the maneuver area.

Hajiloo added since exercises are a complementary stage for training and the Army is updating its structure, equipment and knowledge, it is “necessary to practice these trainings in the field.”

On the sidelines of a military drill in northwest Iran on Friday morning, commander of the Army Ground Force Kioumars Heydari said that Iran will test four new weapons in the drill.

There was no word how long the drill will last.

Heydari also said that Iran will not tolerate presence of foreigners in the northwest region of the country.

“The overt and covert presence of the Zionist regime’s proxies and the possibility of a significant number of Daesh terrorists in regional countries add to the importance of this exercise,” General Haydari said.

Daesh militants were brought into the region at the height of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, he said.

“Since we are not sure whether they have departed the area, the drill will convey a message to them. They and the Zionists must know they have no place in the region, and that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran are fairly sensitive to them and will deal with them wherever they see them,” the senior commander stressed, according to Press TV.

He went on to say that various types of home-grown military equipment manufactured by the Islamic Republic of Iran Army and its Ground Forces will be used during the exercise.

Iran’s Northwest Borders Secure, Stable: Police Chief

Iranian Police Commander Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari praised the border forces for ensuring sustainable security in the country’s northwestern areas, saying rapid response by the Police has helped lower the crime rate in that region.

Speaking to reporters in the provincial capital of Oroumiyeh on Monday, General Ashtari commended the security forces for contributing to “appropriate, stable and sustainable security conditions” along the country’s northwestern borders.

The fruitful measures in the northwestern border regions have raised satisfaction among people, he added.

According to the commander, the swiftness and precision of police activities have brought down crime rates in West Azarbaijan Province, which shares border with three countries.

In comments in July, General Ashtari warned that Takfiri terrorists have increased their activities along the Islamic Republic’s borders with the support of certain countries.

Last week, Iraq’s interior minister said his country has reached an agreement with Iran and Turkey to increase cooperation in border control and the fight against illicit drugs.
