TEHRAN (Iran News) – Production of steel ingots and products during the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 20-August 21) increased by 10 and three percent respectively, according to figures released by the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA).

During the period, the country’s production of sponge iron witnessed an 11 percent increase, reported imidro.gov.ir on Monday.

From the beginning of April to the end of August, the country’s steelmakers produced 11.8 million tons of steel ingots (billets, blooms and slabs), said the ISPA report, adding the figure was 10.7 million tons in the same period of its preceding year.

Also, the production of steel products (beams, rebars, angles, channel beams and sheets) during the said period stood at 8.8 million tons, while the corresponding figure last year was 8.5 million tons.

The ISPA report showed that the production of sponge iron for March 20-August 21 amounted to almost 12.9 million tons, which shows an 11 percent increase compared to the related output last year – 11.6 million tons.

According to figures released by the World Steel Association (WSA) on August 24, Iranian steelmakers produced over 16.2 million tons of crude steel during the first seven months of 2020, marking a 10.7 percent rise compared to the figure for the same period in 2019, which was 14.6 million tons.

Iran produced 2.3 million tons of crude steel in July, showing a 14.3 percent rise compared to the figure for the same month in 2019, which was 2.04 million tons.

Iran produced 31.9 million tons of crude steel in 2019, according to the WSA figures released in January.

The country plans to increase its annual steel production capacity to 55 million tons by 2025, with exports expected to reach between 10 million tons and 15 million tons per year.

The WSA is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. Its members represent approximately 85 percent of the world’s steel producers, including over 150 steel producers, with nine of the 10 largest steel companies, national and regional steel industry associations and steel research institutes.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s ministry of trade (MIMT) has said in its latest monthly report that the country’s exports of goods, excluding crude oil, reached nearly $11 billion in terms of value in five months ending late July.

The report, published on Saturday, showed that total exports from Iran between March 20 and August 21 had exceeded $10.9 billion while imports into Iran had topped $13.7 billion over the same period, Press TV reported.

Figures released by the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade (MIMT) showed that gross weight of export shipments over the period were nearly three times the weight of imported goods as Iran shipped 38 million metric tons of cargoes to other countries against 13.8 tons imported.

Corn, which Iran is increasingly using as animal feed, was a major import item, showed the report, as the country took delivery of nearly 4.3 million tons of shipments, a 14-percent surge year on year in late August.

The figures also showed that trade with other countries rebounded in July-August as neighbors and countries around the world began to ease restrictions meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Iran shipped $2.16 worth of goods in the fifth month of the calendar year while imports reached $2.875 billion. China remained the largest trade partner as it topped the list of Iran’s main export destinations while it was also the biggest supplier of goods to the country, according to the MIMT.

Iran’s non-oil trade has remained largely stable despite sanctions imposed by the United States since 2018. The bans have sought to deter governments and entities from engaging in trade with Tehran.

However, direct sanctions on trade of crude have caused a boom in Iran’s non-oil exports as the country keeps finding more markets for its high-quality products.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran exported 21,720 tons of pistachio worth over $154.1 million during the first three months of the current Iranian year (March 20-June 20), announced the spokesman of Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).

Rouhollah Latifi said on Wednesday that China was the first destination for exported Iranian pistachio during the said period, with 5,547 tons ($35.4 million), followed by Germany, with 2,982 tons, Iraq with 1,866 tons, Russia 1,455 tons and Kazakhstan with 1,129 tons, respectively.

He noted that last year, Iran was the second exporter of pistachios in the world with $586 million, while the US, with $1.56 billion in exports, was at the top.

The global pistachio market is dominated by Iran and the US, two countries in stiff competition to gain a bigger share of the market, said the head of Iran Pistachio Association in December 2019.

Mahmoud Abtahi told Iran Daily that Italy, Greece, Afghanistan, Syria, and Turkey are also among the main players in the world pistachio market.

Abtahi noted that Iran exports about 80 percent of its pistachio harvest, adding that the price of the product in the local market is determined by its global price as well as its supply and demand.

The official referred to the 100-year history of Iran’s pistachio exports, and said, “We export pistachios to almost all countries, both directly and indirectly.”

Abtahi said that dried fruits are among the country’s most important non-oil exports, of which the share of pistachios is 70 percent.

The official cited Kerman, Khorasan Razavi, and Yazd as the provinces with the highest number of pistachio orchards in the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Olive production in Iran in the previous calendar year (which ended on March 19) witnessed a 20 percent growth year-on-year, said the head of the Iranian Olive Council (IOC).

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Iran Daily, Mehdi Abbasi put last year’s output at between 110,000 tons and 120,000 tons, adding the figure stood at 90,000 tons in the preceding year.

He also said that Iran’s olive is known to rank first in the world in terms of taste.

Commenting on the reasons for the rise in Iran’s output in the previous year, the IOC head said although olive production is an emerging industry in the country, the area under olive cultivation has been expanded in the past few years.

“On the other hand, the greater use of science and modern technologies in the industry in recent years has had positive impacts on Iran’s olive production.”

Estimating the country’s olive output in the current year (to end on March 20, 2021), he said it is impossible to give an exact figure as the harvest season has not arrived yet.

Olive harvest season in Iran begins in late September and continues until late January.

Abbasi, however, regretted that Iran’s output would see a fall this year, compared to that of last year, given the climate fluctuations in late March and early April and the extreme cold in the winter.

During the spring this year, he added, sunshine was insufficient on many days, which has negative impacts on the olive trees’ yield.

Abbasi said it is estimated that olive is cultivated in 85,000 hectares of gardens in Iran.

He said major olive production regions in the country are located in the provinces of Zanjan (northwest Iran), Gilan (northern Iran), Qazvin (northern Iran), Fars (southern Iran), Golestan (northern Iran) and Semnan (northern Iran).

The IOC head stressed that subtropical and temperate climates are suitable for olive cultivation, describing a Mediterranean climate as the best option for growing the crop.

He said Iran has great potential for increasing its olive cultivation in light of its suitable climate if the public sector adopts appropriate policies to this end.

Abbasi regretted that Iran fails to have a significant share in the world’s olive export market, and said, “We have not put in a convincing performance in the field of branding. There are currently few brands in the country involved in olive exports, which has caused Iran to lag behind its rivals in international markets.”

“Each of the world’s major producers and their crops is famous for a certain property [or a number of them]. For instance, Spain is known as the world’s biggest olive producer. This is while Iran’s olive is known to be the world’s most delicious one. In addition, the country’s olive oil is also unrivaled in the world in terms of taste and quality.”

Iran’s olive is exported to many countries including a number of European states, he said, adding, even countries such as Italy, Spain, and the UK that are among the world’s major producers of the crop are willing to import Iranian olive for its high quality and delicious taste.

Abbasi put the per capita consumption of olive oil in Iran at solely 200 grams per annum, saying this comes as, Europe’s average stands at 11 kilograms per year and that of Greece, which ranks first in the world in this regard, at 24 kilograms yearly.

Also commenting on the health benefits of consuming olive oil, the IOC head said despite having the largest number of tobacco smokers in the world, Greece has the lowest number of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases worldwide, as the Greeks highly consume olive oil.

“Olive oil is the only of its kind that not only does not build up in the walls of arteries but also helps cleanse them. In the holy Quran, the olive has been sworn on in several instances.”

He called on the Iranian government to provide domestic olive oil production industry with further support as it helps boost employment, prevent the outflow of foreign currency resources, and, most importantly, ensures the health of the society.

Given the spread of coronavirus in the worldwide, some neighboring countries like the Persian Gulf littoral states [including Kuwait] had shut down their borders on importing products, he highlighted.

A couple of days ago, a refrigerated containerized cargo of agricultural products, as weigh as 500 tons, moved from Dayyer Port in Bushehr province towards Al Shyoukh Port in Kuwait, the deputy industry minister added.

Given the pleasant and favorable climatic condition of Iran in the current year [started March 21, 2010], the production of agricultural products is satisfactory as compared to a year earlier, he said, adding, “presently, country’s agricultural products are exported to neighboring countries.”

According to the available information, Iran’s agricultural products are exported to the neighboring countries including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, and Qatar considerably and Kuwait has recently been added to the list of Iran’s target market of agricultural produce, TPOI head stressed.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A downward trend in the inflation rate in Iran and the improvement in the country’s non-oil economic growth will continue in the next Iranian year (starts on March 20), a deputy governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) said.

In an interview with Tasnim, Peiman Qorbani, the CBI deputy governor for economic affairs, said macroeconomic indicators illustrate an improvement in Iran’s economic conditions despite the maximum pressures that the enemies have been exerting on the country.

Calculations and assessments indicate that the downward trend in the inflation rate and the improvement in the non-oil economic growth will continue next year, he added.

The continuation of the current trend and stability of other conditions will reduce the inflation rate in the next Iranian year to around 20 percent, Qorbani said, noting that such circumstances will offer an appropriate prospect for strengthening anti-inflationary policies, a bigger drop in the inflation rate, stabilization of economy, and a structural reform of the country’s money market.

In remarks in October 2019, Iranian President’s Chief of Staff Mahmoud Vaezi said the US economic war and unprecedented sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic have failed to stop the country’s economic growth.

Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri had also announced earlier that despite the US government’s sanctions against the country, Iran’s economy was moving toward a better and more stable situation.

The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since May 2018 after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of handicrafts, carpet and tourism committee of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives Mr. Abdollah Bahrami believes by a good and wise planning, carpets and handicrafts can replace oil sales revenues in the country and reduce reliance on oil revenues.

Bahrami in a joint press conference with the managing director of Talfigh-e Honar Cooperatives Mr. Seyed Morteza Mortazavi highlighted major programs of the cooperative sector in the country in handicrafts industry and ways to reduce reliance on oil revenues.

Bahrami said that Iran’s sales of hand-woven carpets in the past two decades usually stood at $1.5 and over 2m carpet weavers were active in the country while the annual capacity for producing hand-woven carpets was around 6m square meters and it could earn the country $3b through exports of carpet.

He went on to say that lack of attention by the government and abundant problems for carpet-weavers caused Iran to lose its world stance and its forex revenues began to fall. He added that although Iran is full of designs and priceless treasury in diversity in designs, and over 6,000 educated people are involved in the carpet industry, exports and production of carpets are declining due to inattention and negligence.

He also criticized Iran’s Central Bank’s regulations for hand-woven carpet exporters, adding that it takes one year and exporters have to sell their forex in the NIMA system.

He went on to criticize the government for stopping the support of carpet weavers by cutting their insurance. He added that the government is not ready to pay its share of social welfare insurance and carpet weavers themselves have to pay the total money and most of them cannot afford them and leave the job.

Bahrami went on to say that in the past, the carpet industry was exempted from paying value-added tax because most of the hand-woven carpet producers from the lowest deciles of the society but today both sale and export have to pay 9 percent VAT.

He added that currently over one million people are active in the carpet industry and they can earn the country over $3b.

He said the value of hand-woven carpet last year stood at $420m but the figure has been only $30m in the first four months of the current year.

Bahrami noted that over 113,000 cooperatives for producing hand-woven carpets exist in the country and the number of weavers who are under social welfare insurance is unknown.

He admitted that the carpet industry has faced both domestic and international sanctions, adding that exports are done in rial but the raw material for weaving is bought based on free-market price.

Bahrami said that Germany, the UAE, South Africa, China, and Japan are the main destinations for Iran’s hand-woven carpets.

He reiterated that to boost the carpet industry, it needs financial facilities, adding that levying VAT on the carpet industry has increased the production cast.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Talfigh-e Honar Cooperatives Mr. Mortezavi said that most of the handicrafts in the country are produced in the houses and over 6100 workshops are active in the country and over 5,000 people are busy in the handicrafts industry.

He added that according to the statistics, the country exports one million barrel of oil per day and $6m enter into the treasury while by exporting 10,000 pieces of handicrafts, the country can earn the same amount of money.

He reiterated that over 180,000 pieces of handicrafts are produced in the country per day and each piece worth 200 to 400 euros.

Mortazavi added that the statistics show that handicrafts industry can earn 18 times more than what oil earns the country like India whose revenues from handicrafts are over billion dollars.

He said that Iran is the biggest hub of the handicrafts industry in West Asia and it can earn money equal to oil revenues in three years. Thus the country’s reliance on oil revenues will decrease by the time handicrafts production goes up.

He went on to say that currently Iran’s handicrafts are exported to European countries and Canada and soon a permanent exhibition for sales of Iranian handicrafts will be set up in Afghanistan, while the cooperative has programs to have a vast presence in Germany and Poland.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s petrochemical exports have increased 1.5 times over the past six years in view of the completion of a number of projects within the same time span.

This has helped Iran improve its status in international petrochemical markets, raise its exports of raw materials and boost production of downstream products, according to IRNA.

Iran’s petrochemical industry has taken two major leaps since 1997. During 1997-2013, the country managed to increase its production of petrochemicals from 5.8 million tons per year to 22.6 million tons per annum. In addition, the value of Iran’s overseas sales of petrochemicals reached $11.85 billion in 2013 from $500 million in 1997.

As part of the industry’s second huge leap, the country’s installed production capacity amounted to 66 million tons per year over the past six years. This was accomplished by completing the implementation of 15 projects in this period with $5.4 billion in investments and helped Iran’s exports of petrochemicals witness a 1.5-fold growth since 2013.

Among the achievements of the Iranian petrochemical industry’s accelerated development over the past six years have been a decline in the country’s exports of raw materials, an increase in its creation of added-value and a boost in the production of downstream products.

In the year to March 2019, 8.5 million tons of petrochemicals, 29.5 percent of the country’s total output, were consumed domestically.

Despite the imposition of unilateral sanctions by Washington on Tehran, Iranian petrochemical firms are still exporting their products, generating substantial foreign currency revenues.

In May 2018, Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed between Iran and the P5+1 in July 2015, and reimposed Washington’s unilateral sanctions on Tehran.

In light of the Iranian government’s management of domestic petrochemical companies’ income, currently, the firms’ foreign currency revenues are injected almost entirely into the country’s economy, of which 80 percent are made available for imports through Iran’s domestic Forex Management Integrated System (locally known as NIMA).

The accelerated development of the domestic petrochemical industry has also helped create close to one million direct jobs.

If the development of the Iranian petrochemical sector continues to gather momentum, the country’s annual petrochemical production capacity will stand at 100 million tons in the year to March 2022, generating $37 billion in foreign currency revenues. This means that Iran’s annual installed production capacity of petrochemicals would increase 79 percent by March 2022, compared to the figure for 2013, thus, helping the income generated by the sector see an over 60 percent growth.

To achieve this target, 28 high priority projects are required to be completed in the country by March 2021 with $17 billion in investments.
