Iran Steel Production Hits 9.23m Tons in Five Months

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran cast over 9.23 million tons of crude steel in the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 20-August 21).

The figure shows a seven percent growth compared to the amount for the same period last year which was 8.62 million tons, announced Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) in a statement on Tuesday, IRNA reported.

The report added that over six million tons of steel products were produced during the said period, indicating two percent of growth compared to corresponding figure of preceding year, 5.88 million tons.

According to figures released by the World Steel Association (WSA) on August 24, Iranian steelmakers produced over 16.2 million tons of crude steel during the first seven of 2020, marking a 10.7 percent rise compared to the figure for the same period of 2019, which was 14.6 million tons.

Iran produced 2.3 million tons of crude steel in July, showing a 14.3 percent increase compared to the figure for the same month of 2019, which was 2.04 million tons.

Iran produced 31.9 million tons of crude steel in 2019, according to the WSA figures released in January.

The country plans to increase its annual steel production capacity to 55 million tons by 2025, with exports expected to reach between 10 million tons and 15 million tons per year.

The WSA is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. Its members represent approximately 85 percent of the world’s steel producers, including over 150 steel producers, with nine of the 10 largest steel companies, national and regional steel industry associations and steel research institutes.

Iron Pellets Production in Iran Increases

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran produced over 9.9 million tons of iron pellets during March 20-July 21, 2020, which marks a five percent increase compared to figure for the same period last year which was 9.4 million tons.

According to a report by Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) on Saturday, Gol-e Gohar Complex produced 4.15 million tons of iron pellets during the period while the output of Middle East Mines Industries Development Holding Company (MIDHCO), Chadormalou and Opal Parsian Sangan Industrial and Mineral (OPSIM) stood at 2.24 million tons, nearly 1.2 million tons and 954,899 tons, respectively.

The IMIDRO report added that Sanabad Iron Ore Complex, Sanabad Steel and Mineral Industries and Saba Nour Iron Ore Plant produced 343,992 tons, 844,833 tons and 164,253 tons of iron ore pellets during the four months.

The mentioned companies supplied 5.64 million tons of iron pellets as the feed of domestic steel plants, while the remaining were exported.

South Pars Refinery Gas Output Increases

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The supervisor of the second refinery of Iran’s giant South Pars gas field has said the refinery’s gas production has increased by two percent in the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 20-July 21, 2020).

According to Hossein Baghban, the increase in the supply of feedstock to the refinery in the mentioned four-month period has come from the rise in the production capacity of the field’s phases 6, 7, and 8, which send their gas to the mentioned refinery for processing, ISNA reported.

Reducing the downtime of processing units and improving processing conditions are also on the agenda to realize the goals of further increasing the refinery’s output in the current Iranian year (ending March 2021).

He said that overhaul operations and the realization of all overhaul programs based on schedule are among the important activities planned for the current year to sustain production in phases 2 and 3.

South Pars Gas Complex is comprised of 14 gas refineries in southern Iran that are currently processing the gas extracted from the country’s giant South Pars gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf.

The mentioned gas field covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which, called South Pars, are in Iran’s territorial waters. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers, called North Dome, are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.

Currently divided into 24 standard phases in the Iranian side, the field is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.

All the offshore operations of the development project of the field, except for phase 11, were completed in the past Iranian year (ending March 19).

Crude Steel Output of Iran Increases by 9% in 4 Months

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Production of steel ingots in Iran rose nine percent during the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 20-July 21, 2020) compared to the corresponding figure of the preceding year, according to figures released by the Industry Ministry.

Over 9.483 million tons of steel ingots were produced during the four-month period of this year, rising from 8.683 million tons of the product produced in the first four months of the previous year, reported IRNA.

Production of steel ingots in Iran is expected to surpass 30 million tons in the current Iranian year (ending March 20, 2021), announced Deputy Industry, Mine, and Trade Minister Darioush Esmaeili.

The official underscored that the country is planning to rise to eighth place by the Iranian calendar year 1404 (to start in March 2025).

“Given the country’s 2.8-billion-ton iron ore reserves, we need new explorations in this field, because when the annual steel ingot production capacity reaches 55 million tons, the current production levels of iron ore can only supply the industry for 12 to 13 years,” the official stated.

He further noted that over 90 million tons of iron ore were produced in the country during the previous Iranian calendar year (ending March 19), of which only seven percent was exported.

The Ministry of Industry, Mine, and Trade has announced that production of iron ore concentrates in Iran reached 47.306 million tons in the previous Iranian calendar year, registering a four-percent rise compared to the preceding year.

Iran’s export of steel products in the past Iranian year rose 27 percent compared to the preceding year.

As reported, the country’s major steel producers exported about 7.33 million tons of the products last year.

According to Esmaeili, 10 years ago Iran exported more than 20 million tons of unprocessed iron ore and the figure fell to a maximum of six million tons last year.

Sponge Iron Output Rises 11% in 4 Months

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Output of sponge iron and crude steel production increased by 11 percent and eight percent respectively during the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 20-July 20, 2020), the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) announced on Wednesday.

According to an IMIDRO report, large companies’ chain steel production comprising concentrate, pellets, sponge iron, and crude steel has risen in the first four months of the current Iranian year by one, two, 11 and eight percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year, reported Fars News Agency.

During the mentioned period, the production of iron ore concentrates and pellets has topped 16 million tons and 14.7 million tons, respectively, and the production of sponge iron and crude steel has also exceeded 10.5 million and 7.4 million tons, respectively.

Biggest Methanol Plant Operational in Iran

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Iranian president on Thursday inaugurated the world’s largest Methanol producing plant in the country’s southern province of Bushehr.

In a ceremony held via videoconference on Thursday, President Hassan Rouhani ordered the opening of three energy projects in Bushehr and the western provinces of Lorestan.

The projects, completed with an investment of $1.57 billion by the private sector, include Kaveh plant, known as the biggest methanol producing facility in the world, and Kimia Pars petrochemical factory in Bushehr, as well as a plant producing catalysts in Lorestan.

The three projects provide direct employment for 2,110 people.

In remarks at the conference, Rouhani said his administration has devised plans to reduce the export of crude oil and natural gas and intends to produce more petrochemical products instead.

Kaveh plant has the capacity to produce 7,000 tons of methanol every day.

Capacity of Steel Production Grows; Iranian CEO Says

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Chief Executive of Kaveh Pars Mining Industries Development Holding revealed the growth of the capacity of making steel in the country in the current year (started March 21, 2020).

Speaking in an interview with IRNA on Sat., Seyyed Mohammad Atabak said that 1.2 million tons of steel will be added to the current production capacity of the country annually upon the operation of the second phase of South Kaveh Steel Making Plant.

The second phase of South Kaveh Kish Steel Making Plant became operational concurrent with the Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) in the country on Fri., he added.

This giant project became operational by taking advantage of the expertise and technical know-how of domestic engineers, Atabak emphasized.

According to the Ministry of Industry, Mine, and Trade, planning is underway to achieve production of 55 million tons of steel in the 2025 Outlook Plan, so that the production capacity of the steel sector hit more than 35 million tons last year (ended March 20, 2020).

By complete operation of its production capacity up to 2.4 million tons of steel ingots per annum, South Kaveh Kish Steel Making Plant was turned into one of the largest producers and exporters of steel ingot in the country, he highlighted.

The Ministry of Industry put the volume of steel ingots produced in the country last year (ended March 20, 2020) at 27.2 million tons, expandable to 30 million tons before the termination of the current year (to end March 20, 2021).

Iran Steel Production Grew in June Despite Global Fall

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The steel production in Iran grew by three percent in the quarter ending late June despite a reported fall in the global production of the metal.

A report published by the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA) showed that total steel output in the country had surged in the three-month period ending June 20, to top 7.135 million tons, reported Press TV.

The surge came despite the 8.7 percent fall reported in the global production of the metal at the end of May which had come mainly as a result of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Iran closed down many steel mills in early March after the coronavirus pandemic imposed a lockdown on industrial and business activity.

However, breakdown figures by ISPA showed that Iranian mills pumped out 12 percent more steel slabs this year compared to the March-June period in 2019, to reach a total production of three million tons.

Production of billet and bloom decreased slightly, by three percent, over the three-month period as mills churned out a total of 4.1 million tons, added the report covered by the official IRNA news agency.

Moreover, the report said that Iran’s steel product output also increased between late March and late June, which corresponds to the first quarter of the Iranian fiscal year, to stand at 5.3 million tons.

Total production for sponge iron, also known as direct-reduced iron (DRI), also surged by 12 percent year-on-year in June, to top 8.1 million tons, it said.

The 10th largest producer of steel in the world, Iran eyes a slight increase in annual steel production in 2020 despite a projected fall in the global output because of the pandemic and also the fact that the country’s metals and mining sector remain under a series of US sanctions.

Iran cast a total of 28 million tons of steel in the year ending March 2019, of which just more than a fourth, around 8.5 million tons, was shipped to other countries.

Selected Industrial Productions Raised in Q1

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Statistics of the Ministry of Industry, Mine, and Trade indicate that selected industrial productions registered a hike in the first three months of the current Iranian calendar year (from March 21 to June 20).

Despite sanctions imposed against the country and also the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19 selected industrial productions recorded a growth in the first quarter of the current year as compared to last year’s corresponding period.

Over 200,100 different models of passenger cars, 15,943 pickups, and 1,207 trucks and mini-trucks were manufactured in the country from March 21 to June 20, 2020, showing 8.4, 22.9, and 4.9 percent growth respectively.

Accordingly, 93,000 combine harvesters and 4,330 tractors were manufactured by domestic companies in the first quarter of the current year, registering a 5.7 and 1.1 percent hike as compared to the same period of last year.

In spite of cruel sanctions imposed against Iran and also the spread of the novel coronavirus, COvId-19, in the country, manufacturing selected industrial productions increased in line with materializing the slogan of the current year dubbed ‘Surge in Production’.

Aluminum Production Doubles in 3 Months

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Production of the aluminum ingot in Iran rose 63 percent during the first three months of the current Iranian year (March 20-June 20) compared to the same period last year.

According to a report by IRNA, Iran had done the production of 101,195 tons of aluminum ingot in the first three months of this year.

The country’s aluminum ingot output stood at 36,025 tons during May 20-June 20, showing a 73-percent rise compared to the same period the previous year.

Production of the aluminum ingot in the country is planned to increase by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2021).

Iran’s major plants produced 275,716 tons of aluminum ingots in the past Iranian year (ended March 19), according to the data released by the Industry, Mine and Trade Ministry.

The country’s aluminum ingot production in the past year fell eight percent in comparison to the figure for its preceding year.

The data show that among the country’s top producers, Iranian Aluminum Company had the best performance registering a four percent rise during the mentioned period.

On April 23, during the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s biggest aluminum production complex (in the southern province of Fars), the former industry minister said the country’s aluminum production is expected to be doubled with that unit going operational.

Reza Rahmani put the value of the Iranian mining industry’s production at about $22 billion, saying that the country is relatively self-sufficient in minerals and a great volume is also exported every year.

“The country’s capacities in the sector, saying that Iran is ranked 18th among the world’s top aluminum producers, and with this new plant going operational the country will climb four places to stand at 14th place,” he said.

Iran plans to reach the annual production of 1.5 million tons of aluminum ingot by 2025.
