Veteran forward Arsalan Kazemi anchored the effort with 16 points, 15 rebounds and two timely triples, while Seyed Jafari shone brightest with a game-high 22 points, 5 assists and 5 three-pointers. Guard Sina Vahedi added 19 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists as Team Melli finished with a 5-1 record and the bronze medals.

New Zealand’s Flynn Cameron fought to the end with 18 points and relentless rim attacks, while Mojave King contributed 13 points and 4 rebounds.

TEHRAN (Iran News) Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani on Wednesday rejected the joint statement released recently by the prime ministers of Australia and New Zealand.

After a meeting in Canberra on August 16, Anthony Albanese and Christopher Luxon called on Iran to refrain from what they called destabilizing actions in the Middle East. The two have also asked Iran in the joint statement to cease threats of a military attack against the Israeli regime.

In response, Kanaani said the joint statement has covered only a piece of reality and ignored many other important parts.

“The request for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the protection of civilians, and the immediate and adequate delivery of humanitarian aid supplies to the people of Gaza are global demands, and the international community must take practical and effective measures to fulfill them and force the Zionist regime to accept them,” the Iranian spokesman said.

He noted that the joint statement by Australia and New Zealand reveals their double standards regarding fundamental human rights, international law and regional developments.

The spokesman noted that overt and covert support for the Israeli regime, which has been committing genocidal and war crimes against Palestinians for over ten months, is tantamount to the encouragement of the criminal Zionist regime.

The statement from Australia and New Zealand has truly turned a blind eye to the realities and misled the world public opinion, Kanaani added.

He noted that while the UN Security Council has failed to issue even one statement in condemnation of the Israeli assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in the shadow of the US’ unconditional support for the Zionist regime, the “illogical request” from Australia and New Zealand translates to the ignorance of Iran’s inherent right to punish the aggressor and create deterrence against the Zionist regime’s acts of adventurism.

Denouncing the racist Israeli regime as the root cause of threats to regional and international peace and security, Kanaani reminded Australia and New Zealand that the arbitrary selection of the international norms would not only fail to reduce the regional tensions, but also encourage the rogue Israeli regime to escalate its destabilizing activities in the region.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Australian man who killed 51 people at two mosques in New Zealand in 2019 meticulously planned his shooting rampage to maximize casualties, a prosecutor said at the start of sentencing hearings on Monday.

Brenton Tarrant, a self-confessed white supremacist, has pleaded guilty to 51 murder charges, 40 charges of attempted murder and one charge of committing a terrorist act in relation to the massacre in the southern city of Christchurch, which he streamed live on Facebook.

The 29-year-old faces a life prison term, possibly without parole, when he is sentenced later this week.

Handcuffed and dressed in grey prison clothes, Tarrant sat impassive as he looked directly at survivors and family members of those who died speaking about how their lives had been affected by the killings.

Crown prosecutor Barnaby Hawes said Tarrant told police after his arrest that he wanted to create fear among the Muslim population.

“He intended to instil fear into those he described as invaders, including the Muslim population or more generally non-European immigrants,” Hawes said, Al Jazeera reported.

Tarrant also expressed regret for not taking more lives and had planned to burn the mosques down, Hawes said.

Maysoon Salama, mother of 33-year-old Atta Elayyan, who was shot dead as he prayed at the back of the mosque, said she constantly wondered what her son had been thinking in his last moments “armed only with his courage”.

Elayyan was a goalkeeper for the New Zealand men’s futsal team.

“I can’t forgive you…” She said. “You gave yourself the authority to take the souls of 51 people. Our only crime in your eyes is that we are Muslims.”

Gamal Fouda, imam of Al Noor mosque, told Tarrant that he was “misguided and misled”.

“I can say to the family of the terrorist that they have lost a son and we have lost many from our community, too,” Fouda said.

“I respect them because they are suffering as we are.”

While most of Tarrant’s victims were at Al Noor mosque, he attacked a second mosque before being detained en route to a third.

The attacks prompted a global outpouring of grief, as well as a ban on weapons and closer scrutiny of online platforms.

Security was tight outside the court, with police dogs pacing the streets and snipers on rooftops, television footage showed.

High Court judge Cameron Mander said that he had received more than 200 victim impact statements, along with submissions from various organizations.

“I have read them all,” said Mander, who added that he would not sentence Tarrant before Thursday morning after survivors and family members of victims had had an opportunity to address the court.

Many of the people who will give victim impact statements have travelled from overseas for the sentencing, undergoing two weeks of quarantine so they can participate.

Due to coronavirus-related restrictions, hundreds more will have to observe physical distancing as they watch proceedings via live feeds to seven courtrooms in Christchurch.

Others have been granted permission to monitor the hearings online, all part of a massive logistical exercise that includes the live translation of proceedings into eight languages to accommodate the diversity of the Muslim community.

Live reporting from the courtroom has been banned, and other restrictions have been put in place on what the media can report.

A murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison. The judge can impose a life term without parole, a sentence that has never been used in New Zealand.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – New Zealand’s embattled Health Minister resigned on Thursday after security slip-ups at quarantine facilities where the coronavirus was detected just days after officials declared it had been eliminated from the country.

New Zealand’s Health Minister, David Clark was also under fire for personally breaching strict lockdown rules twice earlier in the year, by taking his family on a beach trip and driving to a mountain biking track.

“It has become increasingly clear to me that my continuation in the role is distracting from the government’s overall response to COVID-19 and the global pandemic,” Clark said at a news conference in Wellington, Reuters reported.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who had earlier refused calls to sack Clark, citing his critical role in the country’s response to the pandemic, said she agreed with his decision.

Recent opinion polls have Ardern’s Labor Party far ahead of its main rival National Party, putting it on track to win a September 19 general election, but public confidence in her government has been undermined by a series of blunders.

Ardern had declared in early June that New Zealand had eliminated coronavirus, although she warned there would almost certainly be new cases, as she lifted social distancing restrictions.

Just days later it was revealed that two women who arrived from Britain who were allowed to leave quarantine early on compassionate grounds later tested positive for the virus.

The country still has no known cases of community transmission, but there are 22 active cases at the border through returning New Zealanders.

Ardern appointed Education Minister Chris Hipkins as interim health minister until the September election, after which she said she would consider a permanent replacement.

The Southland region declared a state of emergency after being deluged with more than 1,000 mm of rainfall in 60 hours, triggering landslides on major roads and causing rivers to burst their banks, making severe flooding in New Zealand.

Authorities told residents in the low-lying areas of Gore and Mataura to evacuate immediately early on Wednesday as floodwaters in the Mataura River peaked, warning those further downstream in Wyndham to prepare to leave.

“We have issued notices to evacuate and to prepare to evacuate to 6,000 people across the region,” an Emergency Management Southland (EMS) spokeswoman told AFP.

Residents were advised to grab medication, clothing and identification documents, then head to higher ground.

Power to affected areas was cut off as a precaution and evacuation centres were set up in local churches and schools.

Floodwaters washed away sections of the only road to Milford Sound, a popular hiking spot for international tourists, and EMS said almost 200 people were being airlifted to nearby Te Anau.

“The tourists… Have been well catered for,” it said.

“Morale has been high amongst the visitors and staff, as they received regular briefings and have been in contact with friends and family.”

Only two minor injuries have been reported after a landslide hit a hut on the Routeburn walking track, with both people receiving treatment at the scene.

“Police can confirm a further person died in an Australian hospital last night as a result of injuries suffered in the Whakaari/White Island eruption,” New Zealand’s deputy police commissioner, John Tims, said in a statement on Monday, Reuters reported.

Police did not provide details on the identity or nationality of the person. The majority of the previously named victims after the powerful eruption of White Island, also known by its Māori name of Whakaari, were Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Two others are still missing since the incident and presumed dead. New Zealand scaled down the search operations and has acknowledged that the bodies of the two missing people may never be found.

There were 47 people, mostly tourists, on or near the White Island volcano when it erupted on December 9, those who survived are still being treated in hospitals in New Zealand and Australia for severe burn injuries.

Official inquiries into the eruption and New Zealand’s response will take up to a year to conclude, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The death toll from New Zealand White Island volcano eruption has risen to 18, including two people whose bodies have not been recovered, police said.

A land search early today failed to find any sign of the missing pair after eruption of New Zealand Volcano, and divers returned to the sea in the afternoon amid increasing speculation both could be in the water, AFP reported.

Deputy Police Commissioner Mike Clement said there was “every chance” the bodies had been washed into the sea from the stream where they were last seen Monday.

He added that searchers were “satisfied that the area we searched near the jetty is clear of the bodies”.

“The rescue teams are frustrated. We understand completely how frustrating it is for loved ones who want the bodies back,” Clement said.

Forty-seven people were on the island – a popular tourist attraction – when the explosion happened.

The death toll now stands at 18 after an Australian victim who had been repatriated to Sydney died in hospital almost a week after the deadly eruption.

Another 26 survivors remain in New Zealand and Australian hospitals, of which 20 are listed as “critical” and fighting for their lives after the eruption on the desolate island, which is the country’s most active volcano.

The family of the latest victim has requested his name and age not be released.

Police today named seven victims who have been officially identified including New Zealand tour guide Tipene James Te Rangi Ataahua Maangi, 24.

Four were Australians – Zoe Ella Hosking, 15, her stepfather Gavin Brian Dallow, 53, Anthony James Langford, 51, and Karla Michelle Mathews, 32 – along with Matthew Robert Hollander, 13, and Berend Lawrence Hollander, 16, who were US citizens with Australian permanent residency.

Clement said although the land and sea searches had so far been unsuccessful in finding the remaining bodies, police had not given up hope.

“There will come a time when we’ve done everything we can do when we’ve done everything that’s sensible but we’re not there yet… we don’t give up easily,” he said.

Scientists monitoring White Island said there had been no further significant activity since last Monday’s eruption but the risk remained.

A glow was visible from the vent area overnight “which confirms there is a high heat flow present”, said Geoff Kilgour, a volcanologist with GNS Science, which monitors seismic and volcanic activity in New Zealand.

“This has been confirmed today by an aerial observation this morning that noted an active crater is emitting volcanic gas at a high rate and very high temperature” above 200C, he added.

The disaster has raised questions about why tourists were allowed on a volcano where experts had recently raised threat levels.

The protests were inspired by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, who spoke to world leaders this week at a United Nations summit in New York.

A march to the Parliament in New Zealand’s capital Wellington was one of the largest protests ever held there and organizers needed to change their security plans to accommodate the swelling crowd. Thousands more marched in Auckland and in other parts of the country.

Several million people took part in the so-called global climate strike last Friday, which was timed to coincide with the UN meeting. New Zealand and a number of other countries focused their protest efforts on the second wave, bookending a week in which climate change was at the forefront of the global conversation.

Thunberg said she planned to attend a protest in Montreal.

“New Zealand leading the way into Friday nr 2 in #WeekForFuture,” she tweeted. “Good luck everyone striking around the world. Change is coming!!”

In Wellington, 18-year-old university student Katherine Rivers said it was great to see young people taking action and personal responsibility by marching, AP reported.

“We need to stop pandering to some of the people who are making money off climate change. The big oil companies, the dairy industry etc.,” she said. “And make a change for the future of these kids that are here.”

Rivers, who is studying marine biology and environmental studies, said she hopes to make her career about improving the environment, adding that “hopefully I get to have a career.”

While thousands of high school students elected to take time off school to protest, there were also parents, office workers and many other adults who joined the marches. One of them was 83-year-old grandmother-of-three Violet McIntosh.

“It’s not my future we’re thinking about,” McIntosh said.

She said it was time politicians stopped talking and started taking action. She said they should listen to the young people like Thunberg, who she described as “amazing.”

“She stood out there by herself to start it all. Millions of people are following her now,” McIntosh said. “She should be very proud of herself.”

According to Iran Nanotechnology Innovation Council (INIC), a research team at Fasa and Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and the University of Auckland and Waikato in New Zealand has designed a green process for the synthesis of multifunctional silver nanostructures.

Core-shell metallic nanostructures have introduced as a novel multifunctional nanomaterial with enhanced properties. Silver-based nanoparticles are among these particles that have a wide range of applications as antimicrobial agent in modern industries.

The research team designed a green process for synthesizing core-shell metallic silver nanoparticles. The product has antimicrobial properties and in the meantime can remove chemical pollutions from water. Results show that the product could remove 98.5% of color pollutants in just 4 hours.

The results of this research are published in the Journal of Industrial Crops and Products with an impact factor of 3.8.
