Netherlands Emerges as Iran’s Third-Largest Trade Partner in the EU

TEHRAN (Iran News) During this period, Iran exported €600 million worth of goods to the EU, a 7.6% increase from the previous year. On the other hand, Iran imported €2.8 billion worth of goods from the EU, reflecting a slight 2% decrease compared to 2023.

Germany topped the list of Iran’s trading partners with a total trade volume of €1.1 billion. It was followed by Italy (€570 million), the Netherlands (€470 million), Belgium (€270 million), and France (€210 million). Germany also led in exports to Iran, contributing €980 million, while the Netherlands stood out as the second-largest EU exporter to Iran, with exports valued at €430 million.

Iran recorded trade surpluses with select EU countries, including Luxembourg (€7.3 million), Croatia (€8.2 million), and Poland (€9.0 million). However, the country faced significant trade deficits with major partners such as Germany (€10.8 million), the Netherlands (€60.4 million), and Italy (€50.2 million).

Among EU countries, Malta experienced the highest increase in trade volume with Iran, registering a remarkable 169% growth. Estonia, Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania also saw significant increases. Conversely, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Latvia, and Ireland reported notable declines in trade with Iran.

Imports from Iran: Estonia, Greece, Croatia, Denmark, and Hungary recorded the highest growth rates, while Cyprus, Luxembourg, Ireland, and the Baltic states experienced declines.

Exports to Iran: Finland, Romania, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Germany led the growth in exports, while Luxembourg, Croatia, Latvia, and Ireland saw reduced export volumes.

With €430 million in exports, the Netherlands has solidified its position as a key European supplier to Iran, second only to Germany. This reinforces its strategic role in Iran’s trade network within the EU.

The report underscores the evolving dynamics of Iran-EU trade, highlighting opportunities and challenges amid fluctuating trade balances and shifting regional partnerships.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –The caretaker of international affairs department of Iran chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mine and Agriculture (ICCIMA) Ms. Homeira Asadi in meeting with the Commercial Attache of Embassy of the Netherlands said that easing visa issuance for the businessmen who are introduced by the chamber will help the trade between the two countries to boost.

In the meeting, both sides explored ways for boosting bilateral trade and easing visa process was mentioned as one way for enhancing trade between the two countries.

Asadi said that ICCIMA is keen to expand its trade relation with key countries and in this line they can cooperate with the Netherlands in the humanitarian fields. She added that increasing traders in the markets of both countries, acquaintance of traders with capacities and potentials of Iran and the Netherlands, holding webinar in collaboration with the embassies of both sides and the joint chamber of commerce should be prioritized.

Reacting to the anti-Iran media propagation, Asadi said that ICCIMA wants to introduce the potentials and capacities of Iran in cooperation with the Iran-Netherlands Joint Chamber and to hold specialized meetings with presence of specialized unions and groups.

Then Dutch Commercial Attache Mr. Paulsen, for his part, said that in case Iranian businessmen get valid invitations from the Dutch companies and completing the required documents, letter of introduction by the ICCIMA will ease visa process for them.

He added that despite attraction of Iran market, the trade volume of Iran and the Netherlands has declined in the past three years and companies just are working to maintain their positions, adding that they have long been waiting for positive changes and he is sure that in case of change in the current condition, the Dutch companies will return to Iran.

He added that Europe’s sanctions are limited but the U.S. sanctions are effective because all Dutch banks are present in the U.S. and there is a financial problem for the Dutch in Iran. He then pointed to holding exhibitions in the fields of water treatment, agriculture and other fields by the Dutch companies but unfortunately they were not welcomed by Iranian counterparts.

Then Chairman of Iran-Netherlands Joint Chamber Mr. Shahin Sheisi, for his part, blamed the fluctuation in the forex rate and its high cost as the main reason for lack of enthusiasm for partaking in those exhibitions by Iranians and added that despite such problems, both sides should keep the doors for trade open by holding webinars and B2B meetings in order that both countries can expand trade in the future.

He then called for preparing a roadmap for cooperation between Iran and the Netherlands which was welcomed by the Dutch diplomat.

Meanwhile head of Europe Office of the ICCIMA Farkhondehnejad stresses easing the visa process for Iranian traders and called it an effective way for enhancing the trade between the two states.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran urged the Netherlands not to tie improving its relation with Iran to the Vienna talks and called for practical action from the Dutch for the launch of direct flights between Tehran and Amsterdam.

Dutch Ambassador to Tehran Mr. Frank Mollen met Head of Commission of National-Security and Foreign-Policy of Majlis Mr. Vahid Jalalzadeh and during the meeting both sides explored ways for boosting the relation between the two states.

In the meeting, Jalalzadeh pointed to the existing economic and industrial capabilities in Iran and the Netherlands, adding that the current economic relation is not in the expected level and development of tries between the two states should not hinge on the nuclear talks.

He also pointed to the almost 400-year relation between the two countries, adding that there has been always a positive view regarding the Netherlands and this is a good opportunity to broaden the ties between the two countries by using this attitude. He reiterated that the approach of the new government in Tehran is to continue and deepen this relation.

Jalalzadeh who is representative of the city of Urmia to Majlis further emphasized improving the level of ties between the parliaments of the two countries especially among the specialized commissions to identify capacities or likely to remove the existing barriers and also to share experiences in field of legislative.

He then pointed to the cruel U.S. sanctions against Iran and its impact on slump in the level of economic cooperation between Tehran and The Hague, adding that economic relation of the two countries despite current economic and industrial capabilities has not been satisfactory and broadening ties should not be tied to the nuclear talks.

Jalalzadeh added that today the direct flights between Tehran and Amsterdam has come to a halt after 27 years due to lack of refueling services and Tehran expects the Dutch officials to take a practical action in this regard.

He also pointed to the war between Ukraine and Russia and said that nations worldwide are opposed to the double standard policy of the White House, reiterating that Iran is opposed to war in any part of the world. He then called for expansion of bilateral cooperation between Iran and the Netherlands in all fields.

The Dutch Ambassador Mollen, for his part, pointed to the 400-year diplomatic ties between Iran and the Netherlands, adding that there has always been a constructive cooperation between the two countries which is sign of mutual respect between the two nations in different eras.

He also pointed to the decrease in the trade relations between the two states, adding that the U.S. unilateral exit of the JCPOA led to the exit of Dutch companies from Iran’s market which is by itself the main factor in decrease of economic cooperation between the two countries, expressing hope that the Vienna talks bear fruits and with removal of sanctions, Iran and the Netherlands can boost their trade.

Mollen then pointed to the regional developments and hailed Iran as a big and influential country in the region for hosting Afghan nationals and expressed gratitude for all-out efforts of Tehran regarding the Afghan nationals.

Six European States to join INSTEX

STRASBOURG (Dispatches) – Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden will join the INSTEX mechanism for trade with Iran, the six countries declared in a joint statement on Friday (29 November) ahead of further talks between parties to the Iran nuclear deal in Vienna next week.

According To Iran News, Sanction-hit Iran was recently shaken by demonstrations that erupted across the country last week, hours after the price of petrol was raised by as much as 200%, and unrest spread to scores of urban centres, with officials confirming five deaths.

In reaction to EU statements calling for “maximum restraint” handling the protests, Tehran said Europe should refrain from intervening in Iran’s affairs and instead focus on delivering promises under the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran’s economy has been battered since May last year when President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the 2015 nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The plan was signed in 2015 by Iran, China, France, Germany, Russia, UK, US, Germany, and the EU, and hit Iran with sanctions.

The accord required Iran to scale back its nuclear program and considerably downgrade its uranium reserves in exchange for sanctions relief.

European efforts to ensure that Iran can keep trading in spite of the sanctions have had little impact.

“In light of the continuous European support for the agreement and the ongoing efforts to implement the economic part of it and to facilitate legitimate trade between Europe and Iran, we are now in the process of becoming shareholders of the Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX) subject to completion of national procedures,” the joint statement said.

INSTEX was born as the brainchild of France, Germany and the UK in January 2019. It was created as a special purpose vehicle to help EU companies do business with Iran and facilitate non-USD transactions to avoid breaking US sanctions against the country.

Following a meeting of the Joint Commission of the JCPOA in June, EU’s foreign affairs chief, Federica Mogherini, said that the purpose of INSTEX is to facilitate “legitimate trade” with Iran for any EU member and that it has been conceived to be open to non-EU countries.

The six EU member states joining the mechanism reiterated that they “attach the utmost importance to the preservation and full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) on Iran’s nuclear program by all parties involved”.

They also urged Iran to return without delay to full compliance with the terms and provisions of the nuclear agreement.

After the U.S. withdrawal, Tehran began gradually abandoning its JCPOA obligations. In May this year, Iran warned it would gradually abandon its nuclear commitments every 60 days.

Iran announced publicly last week it would resume low-grade uranium enrichment at its underground Fordow nuclear plant, a site ringed by anti-aircraft guns, and this was confirmed by findings of the latest International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
