19 Killed, 15 Injured in Naval Accident Off Southern Iranian Coast

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

TEHRAN – At least 19 have been killed and 15 others injured in a naval accident involving a light Iranian vessel in the south of the country.

The accident happened to Konarak vessel off the port city of Jaask, according to a statement by the Iranian Army’s Navy.

It occurred when a number of vessels belonging to the Iranian Navy were conducting exercises.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the accident.

Health officials say right after the incident on Sunday evening, 10 ambulances were sent to Haft-e Tir wharf to take the injured to the hospital.

They say a total of 16 people have been taken to Imam Ali Hospital, with two people in ICU and one in surgery.

The Konarak Vessel, with body number 1403, is one of several Iranian “Hendijan” class navy vessels that are responsible for logistics and support.

These vessels were made by the Dutch Damen factory in 1988, and are known by MIG-S-4700-SC ID.

The Hendijan class vessels (including the Kunarak) are 47 metres long, and 8.5 metres wide, while their draft is 2.9 metres.

With a carrying capacity of 460 tonnes, these vessels can play the role of a light logistics boat capable of carrying more than 100 people at high speed.

Mine laying and carrying up to 40 tonnes of water and the capacity to carry cargos up to 40 tonnes only on the deck are among other capabilities of this boat.People Killed in Konarak Accident

Although these vessels, as mentioned, have the main task of supporting, but according to Tasnim News Agency, some of them (including Konarak) have been equipped with various weapons such as cruise missiles in recent years, and in addition to their main task, they can also appear as a patrol vessel.

Another weapon mounted on these vessels include a Oerlikon 20 mm cannon.

However, on some of these Hendijan-class vessels, instead of cruise missiles, UAV launchers have been installed, which will help them in reconnaissance missions.

It should be noted that the Konarak vessel joined the fleet of Iran’s Army Navy in Konarak city on October 7, 2018.

Iran-Russia-China Naval Drills Kick Off in Indian Ocean

According To Iran News, Iran, Russia, and China began their joint naval drills in the northern waters of the Indian Ocean on Friday, the deputy commander of the Iranian Navy announced.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Admiral Gholamreza Tahani said the northern part of the Indian Ocean is a highly secure region, adding that the sustainable security has been established by the Iranian Armed Forces.

“This (establishment of security) is a responsibility we have to the country, the region, and the world, and in line with these very important responsibilities, the trilateral war game of Iran, Russia and China begins today in the northern Indian Ocean…,” he added.

Tahani, who is also the spokesman for the Iran-Russia-China joint naval drills, said the purpose of this exercise is to strengthen security and its foundations in the region.

“Since the victory of the Islamic Revolution, it is the first time that the Islamic Republic of Iran holds a combined exercise with the world’s two major naval powers at such a level,” he stated.

He went on to say that according to the schedule, the war game would begin with the sailing of the naval flotillas of the three countries from Iran’s port of Chabahar.

Iran, Russia, and China are holding the four-day joint naval exercise, dubbed Marine Security Belt, in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Oman.

On Wednesday, Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, the spokesman for Iranian Armed Forces, said the event is meant to promote the security of international trade in the strategic regions, adding that sharing experience in maritime rescue operations was also to be pursued in the maneuvers.

On Thursday, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian announced that Beijing’s Xining guided-missile destroyer would take part in the drills. Three Russian vessels are also taking part in the drills, according to reports.

The war game comes amid US efforts to woo countries into a maritime coalition for patrols in the Persian Gulf, which have received lukewarm welcome from its allies.

The drills also come against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US after the Islamic Republic shot down an advanced US spy drone over its territorial waters and also recent attacks by Yemeni forces on Saudi oil facilities, with Washington and Riyadh claiming Iran was behind them.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said on June 20 that a US spy drone that violated the Iranian territorial airspace in the early hours of the day was shot down by the IRGC Aerospace Force’s air defense unit near the Kooh-e-Mobarak region in the southern province of Hormozgan.

The intruding drone was reportedly shot by Iran’s homegrown air defense missile system “Khordad-3rd”.

Tensions between the US and Iran escalated further after Yemeni armed forces conducted a large-scale operation against Saudi Arabia’s Aramco oil installations in September, in response to the Saudi-led war on their country.

The Yemeni Houthi Ansarullah movement immediately took credit for the attacks, but US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo swiftly accused Iran of being behind the assault, without providing any evidence. Tehran categorically rejected the allegations.

TEHRAN– The Iranian Navy on Wednesday unveiled several new military systems, equipment, and projects, including a homegrown type of torpedo fuel that only the US had the technical know-how to make.

In a ceremony in Tehran, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi unveiled nine new achievements of local experts and officers.

The products include a system for testing lightweight anti-submarine torpedoes, called Mersad, which facilitates the weapon preparation process to a great extent.

Among the other products were a testing system used for checking all parts of Ra’d (thunder) missile system, a digital auto-pilot system for guiding torpedoes, and a naval battle simulator.

The Navy commander also unveiled an advanced homegrown fuel that propels torpedoes with combustion engines. Burning without any need for oxygen, such fuel allows for the extension of range of the weapon. Only the US had the know-how to produce the fuel.

Another item put on display in the event was a high-tech material used for coating various military vessels and structures. Developed by Iranian nanotechnology experts, the new material greatly improves durability of equipment and reduces maintenance costs.

The Navy also unveiled the design of an unmanned, remote-controlled boat used for electronic warfare.

The event came one day after a group of commanders met with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on the National Navy Day.

In the gathering, the Leader urged the Navy to enhance its capabilities, both in terms of military gear and combat power, and address its shortcomings by making use of the facilities available in various sectors of the country.

In recent years, Iran’s naval forces have increased their presence in high seas to secure naval routes and protect merchant vessels and oil tankers against pirates.

TEHRAN – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces said the strategy of close interaction between the naval forces of the Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has thwarted the plots of “arrogant powers and adventurists” in the Persian Gulf region.

Iran’s deterrence and defense power in the sea is the outome of the coordination and synergy between the naval units of the Army and the IRGC, Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri said in a statement in commemoration of the National Navy Day.

He also said that Iran’s naval power has foiled the schemes and strategies of “the arrogant powers and adventurists in the strategic Persian Gulf region, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Sea of Oman,” stressing that outsiders have become passive in the face of Iran’s naval capabilities.

In remarks in June 2016, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei underlined that security of the Persian Gulf region comes within the purview of the regional countries alone, and dismissed the US claim of seeking security in the region.

“The Persian Gulf security relates to the countries of the region which have common interests, and not to the US. So, security of the Persian Gulf region should be provided by the countries of this region itself,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei, Commander-in-Chief of the Iranian Armed Forces, has also called for the enhancement of the Iranian naval forces’ presence in international waters and expanding the Navy’s power in balance with the merit of the Islamic Establishment.

TEHRAN – New commander of the Iranian Navy unveiled plans for dispatching military watercraft to Latin America, saying Iranian naval forces will soon sail into the Gulf of Mexico.

Speaking in his first press conference after taking the office, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said Iran’s naval forces will soon go to the Atlantic Ocean, visit some South American countries, and wave the Iranian flag in the Gulf of Mexico.

Highlighting plans to develop military gear for operations in international waters, the commander said the Navy would unveil new vessels and submarines within the next year.

He also noted that the homegrown Separ (shield) missile-launching corvette will join the Caspian fleet next week, describing it as a symbol of the Iranian efforts for peace in the Caspian Sea.

Moreover, Rear Admiral Khanzadi added, the Navy is going to launch an airport in the southeastern port city of Jask, along the coasts of Makran, during the Navy week.

A number of overhauled or updated helicopters and vessels will also return to service during the Navy week, he added.

In November 2016, an Iranian naval flotilla, comprising Bushehr logistic warship and Alvand destroyer, sailed around the African continent and entered the Atlantic Ocean.

Iran maintains that its military presence in international waters is aimed at demonstrating the naval power and extending a message of peace and friendship.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.
