TEHRAN (Iran News) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday used his most important speech of the year to urge China to respect India’s sovereignty in the wake of deadly border tensions.

With talks on easing a military build-up in their Himalayan border region at a stalemate, Modi told an Independence Day ceremony at the historic Red Fort in New Delhi that India’s sovereignty was “supreme” and that relations with neighbors depended on security and trust, AFP reported.

The Hindu prime minister mentioned confrontations with Pakistan and China on their disputed borders, but without naming either country.

“Anyone who has cast an eye on the country’s sovereignty, the country’s army has answered them in their own language,” he said.

“India’s integrity is supreme for us. What we can do, what our soldiers can do – everyone saw that in Ladakh,” referring to a border clash with Chinese troops in the Ladakh region of the Himalayas on June 15.

Twenty Indian soldiers were killed in the clash, which saw the two sides fighting with batons, stones, and bare fists.

China has also acknowledged that it suffered casualties but without giving numbers.

The two sides have blamed each other for the fighting and tens of thousands of Indian and Chinese troops, who also fought a border war in 1962, have since been sent to the region.

Modi said that relations with neighbors are now linked to “security, progress, and trust.”

“A neighbor isn’t just someone who shares our geography but those who share our hearts. Where the relationship is respected, it becomes warmer,” he said.

The 1.4-million-strong military would be built up, he added.

“India is just as committed to its security and strengthening its army as the attempts it has made for peace and harmony,” he said, stressing efforts to make India “self-reliant” in defense production.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday hailed as “unbreakable” ties with India during his meeting with India’s visiting top diplomat Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Tehran.

Zarif tweeted that he had “excellent discussions” with the Indian minister of external affairs on “closer bilateral relations” as well as “regional and global issues” affecting the two countries during the 19th Joint Commission Meeting.

In a tweet on recent Iran and India talks, wrote “Our ties are ancient, historic & unbreakable.”

Jaishankar also took to Twitter to commend the meeting as “very productive”.

He said the two sides “agreed on accelerating” a joint project to develop Iran’s Chabahar port in the country’s southeast and had “a very good conversation on the regional and global picture”.

“India and Iran will work together closely on their shared interests,” Jaishankar said.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Zarif and Jaishankar, who co-chaired the meeting, signed a memorandum of understanding.

Jaishankar arrived in the Iranian capital Sunday on a two-day visit. He is expected to meet with President Hassan Rouhani on Monday.

The Chabahar port complex on Iran’s coast along the Sea of Oman is being developed as a transportation corridor for land-locked Afghanistan.

In May 2016, India signed a deal with Iran to develop two terminals with five berths at the Shahid Beheshti area in Chabahar.

Under the agreement, India would build a 600-meter (1,969 feet) cargo terminal and a 640-meter container terminal. However, only a portion of the two berths has been finished because of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran after President Donald Trump took office in November 2016 that culminated with the reimposition of economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic last year.

In December 2018, India took over operations at part of the Shahid Beheshti port and now hopes to soon start full operations at a portion of it.

The port could potentially open the way for millions of dollars in trade for Afghanistan and cut its dependence on Pakistan’s port of Gwadar, located 166 km to the east.

Reuters contributed to this story.

“Trade protectionism and unilateral policies are now actively gaining momentum, and the issue of how to respond to US pressure and trade protectionism is important not only for China… It will be reasonable if the leaders of the two countries exchange views [on the issue], and we hope that they will reach a broad consensus on issues of upholding justice and opposing trade protectionism,” Zhang said during a press-conference, Sputnik reported.

Zhang also specified that Xi and Modi might also discuss the trade war between the United States and China, noting that this issue could become an important point for negotiations during the Chinese president’s bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries.

The next SCO summit will be held in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek from June 13-14.

In late May, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin would hold talks with Modi during the summit.

The United States and China have been trying to overcome disagreements that emerged in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s decision last June to impose 25 percent tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods in a bid to fix the trade deficit. Since then, the sides have exchanged several rounds of duties.

Donald Trump has become famously infamous for his eccentricity, grandiloquence, and off-the-cuff statements devoid of logic and lucidity. On the receiving end have been both friends and foes.

During his first cabinet meeting of the year, the megalomaniac reality show star turned president fired a salvo at an important regional ally – India. And the salvo backfired, putting him in a tight spot.

Trump mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for funding “a library” in Afghanistan, saying it wouldn’t be used in the war-ravaged country.

“I get along well with India and Prime Minister Modi. But he is constantly telling me he built a library in Afghanistan. Library! That’s, like, five hours of what we spend (in Afghanistan),” he said.

The remarks were made in the context of the growing cost of America’s engagement in the war-torn country, saying that India, Russia and Pakistan should be the ones fighting the Taliban.

“Why is not Russia there? Why isn’t India there? Why isn’t Pakistan there? Why are we there? We are 6,000 miles away,” Trump said, while answering a reporter’s question.

Referring to the library, Trump said Modi is “very smart”. “We are supposed to say, ‘Oh, thank you for the library’. Don’t know who’s using it in Afghanistan. But it’s one of those things I don’t like being taken advantage of.”

Although there was no official reaction from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) government in India, Indian media quoted many top government and opposition leaders denouncing remarks of Trump.

In an unofficial rebuttal, Modi government listed projects worth $3 billion to “educate” Trump on the level of its investment, stakes and contribution in Afghanistan.

It pointed out the “critical role that developmental assistance can play in transforming human lives” and reminded the US president that “India does not send its armed forces abroad except under the specific mandate of UN peacekeeping operations.”

A report in Times of India, quoting ‘official sources’, said India objected to Trump’s comments, stating that the libraries represent India’s contribution to community development in Afghanistan, in addition to billions the country is spending on roads, dams and the country’s new parliament building.

Indian embassy in Afghanistan stated that the current development partnership between New Delhi and Kabul makes India the war-torn country’s largest donor in the region.

It was not clear which library Trump was referring to, but his remarks raised many eyebrows in India, across party lines. Both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress condemned Trump’s attempt to “undermine India’s developmental work” in Afghanistan.

“Maybe Trump should know that while he is decrying every other help in Afghanistan. India has been building not only libraries, but roads, dams, schools and even parliament building,” Ram Madhav, BJP general secretary and spokesperson, said.

“We are building lives, for which the Afghan people thank us, no matter what others do or don’t,” he added.

Congress said India did not “need sermons from the US on Afghanistan.” “Under Dr Manmohan Singh, India helped build the Afghan National Assembly. Humanitarian needs to strategic economic partnership, we are one with our Afghani brothers & sisters,” Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said.

Senior Congress leader and noted author Shashi Tharoor said the “derisive comment” by Trump on India building a library in Afghanistan was a “stinging indictment of the BJP govt’s failure” to convince the U.S. of India’s “bonafide credentials in Afghanistan.”

“We should be proud of our role in Afghanistan and teach U.S. about it,” Tharoor said

Author Radhika Nathan said apparently India did not fund libraries in Afghanistan. “But even if we did, we have to defend building libraries now,” she asked.

“The way India has supported Afghanistan, without bombing them, devastating them, and making them a vassal state – has been remarkable. No wonder Trump doesn’t get it,” said Harini Calamur, writer and filmmaker. “And, in any case Libraries are important. Reading helps prevent people like Trump.”

TEHRAN – Dismissing the attempts of opposition parties to corner him ahead of general election next year, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he would be re-elected with an even bigger majority in parliament in 2019.

In an interview with the Times of India newspaper, Modi said his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government is committed to improving the lives of all citizens regardless of faith and deliver on promises of swift economic development.

Civil society and human rights activists in India have expressed fears that the minority Muslim community was under threat from the right-wing fringe groups that are covertly supported by the ruling party. There have been many cases of hate crimes and mob lynching since the Modi-led BJP government assumed power in 2014.

“We will definitely get more seats than we got the last time and I am confident that we will break all records of the seats won by NDA (National Democratic Alliance) in the past and achieve greater glory,” Modi said. “The people are with us and we have nothing to fear.”

According to opinion polls, Modi remains the front runner to win another term, but the opposition, led by the Congress party, is trying to pull together a grand alliance of regional parties to mount a strong campaign against him.

According to a statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders discussed peace and stability in the region. Modi “reiterated his vision of peace and development in the entire neighborhood”, the statement said.

The PTI said Khan had told Modi that issues between the two nations must be resolved through talks. “Wars can breed tragedies instead of facilitating resolution of conflicts,” he said, according to a PTI statement.

“Prime Minister (Modi) expressed hope that democracy will take deeper roots in Pakistan,” the Indian ministry said in a statement.

The relations between New Delhi and Islamabad have worsened in the last couple of years with peace process stalled amid a series of ceasefire violations and diplomatic rows. The two sides have traded allegations over border skirmishes and civilian casualties on both sides of the dividing line.

In his victory speech on Thursday, Imran Khan had expressed his desire to engage with India in resolving the longstanding dispute over Kashmir, saying “if India comes and takes one step toward us, we will take two”. The statement was widely welcomed in India and Kashmir.
