Speaking in an interview with Mehr news agency on Tue., Dr. Saeed Sarkar reiterated that imported products are given priority to be produced in the country.

Planning is underway to make investment with other countries as joint venture for the production of nano-products in the current year (started March 21, 2021), he said, adding that it will lead to more export of nano-products to other countries.

He further noted that Nanotechnology Development Headquarters will follow up several plans in the current year, the most important of which is related to spurring export of nanotechnology- and hi-tech products overseas.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Sarkar pointed to the export of nanotechnology products in previous years and stated, “Export of nanotechnology products was not satisfactory in the past two years but efforts are underway to compensate export slump witnessed in previous years in the current year.”

Turning to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, he said that intensification of sanctions terms and conditions, coronavirus pandemic and problems created ahead of money transfer, etc. were the problems that reduced export of nanotechnology products overseas over the past years.

He put the nano products exported from the country in 2017 at $77 million, the rate of which hit about $20 million in 2019, showing a considerable decline.

Manufacturing nano-based industrial parts and equipment is of the other programs which is followed up strictly by the Headquarters in the current year, he added.

Iran Makes Anti-Moss Nano-Coating for Watercraft

According To Iran News, An Iranian knowledge-based company has used nanotechnology to develop a special coating that prevents the growth of marine organisms, such as moss, on the outer layer of the hull of ships.

The anti-fouling material invented by the Iranian company prevents undesirable accumulation of moss on the wetted surface of vessels’ hull.

The coating is also environment-friendly, does not release any chemical material into the sea, and reduces the use of biocides.

In addition to the hull of ships, the nano-coating could be applied to coastal structures and piers, as well as military submarines.

The Iranian knowledge-based company has tested the new coating for five years before starting its mass-production.

The anti-fouling layer lasts for at least five years and functions like shark and dolphin skin.

The problem of adhesion of moss to the vessel’s hull increases frictional resistance and fuel consumption, and decreases the vessel’s speed.

In October, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei assured Iranian knowledge-based companies and the enterprises working on advanced technologies that he would do the best to remove obstacles in the way of the youths’ scientific progress.

Back in March and after opening a specialized pharmaceutical plant in Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani assured the private sector of his administration’s support for knowledge-based projects and research activities contributing to national production.

“The administration will seriously support all private sectors in the field of production, particularly those doing knowledge-based activities and the activities on the basis of knowledge and research,” Rouhani said on March 21.

As per the latest updates, Iran holds the fourth place above countries such as South Korea, Germany, Japan and France.

China with the staggering number of 56,648 articles tops the list while the United States and India came in second and third places respectively.

What is nanotechnology?

Generally, nanotechnology is a field of research and innovation concerned with building ‘things’ – materials and devices – on the scale of nanometer – one-billionth of a meter.

As Aznano describes, nanotechnology is hailed as having the potential to increase the efficiency of energy consumption, help clean the environment, and solve major health problems. It is said to be able to massively increase manufacturing production at significantly reduced costs. Nanotech advocates claim that products of nanotechnology will be smaller, cheaper, lighter yet more functional and require less energy and fewer raw materials to manufacture.

Nanotechnology in Iran

Iran’s first researches in this field started in 2000 and with publishing 9 articles, the country achieved the rank of 52 in that year.

The national nanotechnology development headquarters was established in 2005, with the aim of making policies, assessing achievements in field of nanotechnologies, raising public awareness about nanoscience, improving quality of life and creating lucrative markets.

Recognizing the great importance of nanotechnology, Iranians have had boosted researches in the field year on year.

There are 257 companies active in this field, 33 percent of which working on nanomaterials, ISNA reported on Tuesday.

These companies have manufactured 376 different products using the nontechnology, showing that this is a field with huge economic and practical advantages.

The reports also demonstrate that these products are being exported to 47 different countries.

Understanding the spread of cancer to other tissues of the body is of particular importance in the treatment of this disease and it is also a major issue in medical science. It is helpful for doctors to diagnose and prevent it.

Mohammad Abdulahad from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tehran University explained their nanodiogenestic device and said that one of the benefits of their device is that it uses a live tissue to diagnose and the tissue can be used to perform additional experiments.

He went on to say that they had conducted metastasis diagnosis tests on 200 patients and their device had been able to diagnose the presence of cancer cells in the tissue very well.

University of Tehran faculty member pointed to the high cost and long period of time of diagnosis as two major deficiencies in the current methods of diagnosing metastatic cancer, adding “common methods used to detect metastasis of cancer use a series of biological identifiers. Besides being expensive and slow, the current methods do not work with high precision.”

He concluded “we are now focusing on three things: firstly, finding a good market for our devise; secondly, increasing the capability of the device to test as many numbers of samples as possible simultaneously; and finally, increasing its capability to diagnose more types of cancer as it can diagnose metastatic breast cancer.”

INIC Secretary-General Saeed Sarkar told Mehr News correspondent on Wednesday that the country plans to open three more nano product sales offices in China, which would bring the number of Iranian nano offices in the East Asian country to six.

“We picture a bright future for our advances in nanotechnology and have made good progress in this field so far,” Sarkar said, noting the opening of a slaes office in China two years ago aimed at increasing exports to the East Asian country.

“Investing in China for us is equal to investing in 40 countries, which is why China has been our priority,” Sarkar stressed, adding “if we fail to develop our high-tech sectors, the knowledge-based companies will go bankrupt.”

He went on to add, “selling nano products to China can be a good opportunity for us in nanotechnology field. China can serve as a stepping stone for our knowledge-based companies active in nanotechnology to export their products to other countries.”
