TEHRAN (Iran News) – As the GOP convention kicked off Monday, US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) offered a message to American voters: ignore President Trump.

“One thing I will say to the American people: Do not pay any attention to Donald Trump,” Pelosi said during an appearance on MSNBC. “It is his goal to scare people from voting, to intimidate them by saying he’s going to have law enforcement people at the polls, to welcome Russian intervention into our election by letting Putin decide who will be president instead of the American people.

“But ignore him,” she said, “Because his purpose is to diminish the vote, to suppress the vote,” The Hill reported.

The Speaker’s remarks came after she was asked about a new NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll revealing that only 45 percent of respondents said they would feel confident about votes being accurately counted in the November election. That was 14 points lower than how confident people said they felt about the results of the 2016 election.

Earlier in the day, Trump made his first appearance at the four-day Republican National Convention and continued to sow doubts about the reliability of mail-in voting. He argued that expanding access to mail-in ballots — due to the coronavirus pandemic — could lead to widespread voter fraud, even as experts say it is safe.

“Eighty million mail-in ballots they’re working on, sending them out to people that didn’t ask for them,” Trump, who was formally renominated, told supporters in Charlotte, NC “And it’s not fair and it’s not right, and it’s not going to be possible to tabulate, in my opinion.”

In the face of Trump’s repeated attacks on mail-in voting, Pelosi and other Democrats have been trying to reassure the public that their vote will be counted if they vote by mail rather than at their polling stations.

“People are right to be concerned because the president of the United States is saying what he’s saying,” Pelosi told MSNBC from the Capitol, “but don’t pay any attention to him because that’s just a victory for those who want to have a lower turnout so that fewer people are engaged in the decision.”

Elsewhere in the Capitol, House Democrats on Monday grilled Louis DeJoy, the postmaster general and a Trump megadonor who has come under fire for implementing a series of cost-cutting reforms at the Postal Service that congressional Democrats and good-government groups say could disrupt mail-in voting in the presidential election.

DeJoy pushed back on Democrats’ suggestion that the reforms were political in nature and aimed at helping Trump in November, and noted that he himself planned to vote by mail.

“I am not engaged in sabotaging the election,” DeJoy told the lawmakers.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) dubbed the coronavirus the “Trump virus” on Tuesday evening, ratcheting up her rhetoric over Trump’s handling of the pandemic.

“Well, I think with the president’s comments today, he recognized the mistakes he has made by now embracing mask-wearing and the recognition this is not a hoax. It is a pandemic that has gotten worse before it will get better because of his inaction,” Pelosi said on CNN’s “The Situation Room.”

“In fact, clearly, it is the Trump virus,” Pelosi added, reiterating the phrase later in the interview as well.

The Democratic leader was responding to the president’s briefing at the White House earlier Tuesday in which he praised the use of face masks and urged Americans to wash their hands and practice physical distancing to stem the spread of the disease.

During the briefing — the president’s first coronavirus-focused White House briefing in nearly three months — Trump also warned that the outbreak in the US will “get worse before it gets better” amid surges in parts of the country.

“If he had said months ago, let’s wear masks, let’s not — let’s socially distance instead of having rallies and whatever they were, then more people would have followed his lead,” Pelosi argued on CNN. “He’s the president of the United States.”

Pressed by CNN host Wolf Blitzer on whether she was asserting that thousands of Americans had died because of the president’s response, Pelosi responded, “Yes, that’s what I am saying. I think it’s clearly evident.”

The comments mark one of the strongest rebukes yet of Trump’s handling of the pandemic, which Democrats maintain could have been more aggressively dealt with by the White House.

The criticism, which centers around Trump’s early reluctance to wear a mask and barbs from some White House aides directed at health officials such as Anthony Fauci, has been amplified amid a spike in coronavirus cases across the country, particularly in the South and West.

“We’re approaching 4 million. We’re approaching 4 million people infected, people affected by this, infected by it, and a large number, like 140,000, who have passed away. If it’s important to wear a mask now. It would have been important to wear it in March instead of telling us that by April we would all be going to church together. I wish that were the case, but he had no scientific basis for that,” Pelosi said, The Hill reported.

“If they don’t return to science and governance — and that’s a way that we can overcome this. We have hope and prayers for a vaccine. God willing that will be soon. But it is still months away, and people will die. So let’s hope that the president comes closer to embracing the reality of this pandemic, this Trump virus.”

In apparent recognition of the burgeoning health crisis, Trump has expressed more openness to masks, posting a picture on Twitter of him wearing one and urging Americans to more strictly adhere to health guidance from federal officials.

“It will probably, unfortunately, get worse before it gets better,” Trump said Tuesday.

“We’re asking everybody that when you are not able to socially distance, wear a mask,” he added. “Whether you like the mask or not, they have an impact. They’ll have an effect, and we need everything we can get.”

The two top Democrats in Congress said the forced removal of the protesters from outside Lafayette Park “dishonors every value that faith teaches us.”

“At a time when our country cries out for unification, this President is ripping it apart,” Pelosi and Schumer said. “Tear-gassing peaceful protestors without provocation just so that the President could pose for photos outside a church dishonors every value that faith teaches us.”

Pelosi and Schumer called on President Trump, law enforcement, and “all entrusted with the responsibility to respect the dignity and rights of all Americans.”

“Together, we must insist on the truth that America must do much more to live up to its promise: the promise of liberty and justice for all, which so many have sacrificed for – from Dr. King to John Lewis to peaceful protestors on the streets today,” the statement reads, The Hill reported.

“At this challenging time, our nation needs real leadership. The President’s continued fanning of the flames of discord, bigotry, and violence is cowardly, weak, and dangerous.”

The joint statement came after law enforcement officers fired tear gas in front of the White House to clear the area for the president to travel on foot to visit the nearby St. John’s Church. The president posed for photos with a Bible in front of the church, which had been set on fire during Sunday’s demonstrations.

Protesters were removed from the area shortly before 7 p.m., the curfew starts time for the city on Monday. Several governors and mayors condemned the use of force, including DC Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) who enacted the curfew and called the move “shameful.”

The dispersal of protesters came as Trump was announcing he would be mobilizing the military into DC and threatening to do the same in US cities if governors did not utilize their National Guards to “dominate” their streets.

Protests have erupted across the country after George Floyd died after being detained by police in Minneapolis last week.

Former officer Derek Chauvin is shown kneeling on Floyd’s neck in bystander footage of his arrest, as Floyd says he couldn’t breathe and becomes unresponsive. Chauvin was fired and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

The three other officers involved in Floyd’s arrest have been fired but have not been charged as of Monday night.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi endorsed Joe Biden for president, joining a list of top Democrats who have recently thrown their support behind the former vice president.

Nancy Pelosi endorsing the Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden, follows the endorsement of US Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, former president Barack Obama, and former vice president Al Gore, who all threw their weight behind Biden earlier this month.

In a video statement released on Monday, Pelosi cited Biden’s experience in government, including his role in passing the Affordable Care Act, as evidence of his leadership qualities. She said Biden is well-positioned to lead the country amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

“As we face coronavirus, Joe has been a voice of reason and resilience, with a clear path to lead us out of this crisis,” Pelosi said in her endorsement, Reuters reported.

The endorsement comes at an opportune time for Biden, who has struggled to maintain a high profile during the COVID-19 pandemic and sustain the momentum he had built up in his lightning-quick run toward becoming the Democratic nominee.

Besides current and past Democratic leaders, Biden has also won endorsements from some other key stakeholders like Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, a prominent climate change campaigner, and the 400,000-member United Auto Workers union.

The endorsements have given Biden a series of headlines at a time when his campaign is effectively on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak – and when US President Donald Trump has captured media attention with his combative White House briefings.

The Democrats are eager to project unity heading into the presidential race against Trump for the Nov. 3 general election. In recent weeks, the more moderate Biden has made attempts to win the support of the liberal backers of Sanders and Warren.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi branded President Donald Trump the most dangerous person in the history of America.

In an interview with Variety, the Speaker of the House opened up about her hopes for the nomination process and her frustrations with the Trump administration.

“I have real problems with this president because he doesn’t tell the truth, he doesn’t honor the Constitution and he’s harming children,” Pelosi said, The Independent reported.

“The greatness of America is such that we will withstand what (he) has done and move on from that. I feel confident about our ability to do that.”

Pelosi went on to say she wanted the Democrats to “winnow” down the field of candidates so they could focus on fighting Trump because the country “can’t withstand another four years”.

“We have the most dangerous person in the history of our country sitting in the White House,” Pelosi said. “That’s different from what happened in 2016. People thought Hillary would win so they didn’t all turn out. Nobody could possibly think that somebody like Donald Trump could be elected president of the United States. But if you don’t turn out, those who do turn out will call the shots.”

Pelosi, the highest-ranking Democrat, has publicly insisted the party would rally around any chosen nominee but has privately contended with concern within the party about Sanders’ radical agenda and its likely impact on congressional races.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Democratic prosecutors declaring “no one is above the law” went head to head with White House lawyers as closing arguments wrapped up at President Donald Trump Senate impeachment trial, setting the stage for his likely acquittal on Wednesday.

“You can’t trust this president to do the right thing,” chief House prosecutor Adam Schiff said in an emotional speech on the Senate floor on Monday at the end of the two-week trial, AFP reported.

“Truth matters little to him,” the California lawmaker told the 100 members of the Senate who will decide Trump’s fate. “What’s right matters even less and decency matters not at all.

“He will not change and you know it,” Schiff said of the former New York real estate tycoon turned politician. “Now do impartial justice and convict him.”

White House lawyers flatly rejected the arguments that Trump – just the third president in US history to be impeached by the House of Representatives – should be removed from office by the Senate for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

“The president has done nothing wrong,” White House counsel Pat Cipollone said, calling the impeachment by the Democratic-led House “purely partisan and political.”

“We put our faith in the Senate,” he said.

“End the era of impeachment once and for all,” Cipollone said, arguing that the American people – not the Senate – should decide whether Trump remains in office.

Jay Sekulow, another of Trump’s lawyers, said the House impeachment was “reckless” and urged the Senate to acquit.

“The bottom line is that the president’s opponents don’t like the president and they don’t like his policies,” Sekulow said.

The Senate is to vote at 4:00 pm (2100 GMT) on Wednesday and the Republican president is all but certain of being acquitted.

Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate to 47 for the Democrats, but a two-thirds majority, or 67 senators, is needed to remove a president from office.

The House of Representatives impeached Trump on December 18 for withholding $391 million in military aid to Ukraine to demand that Kyiv open an investigation into his potential November election rival, Democrat Joe Biden.

Schiff urged senators to find “courage to stand up” to the president.

“When the president tries to coerce an ally to try to help him cheat in our elections and covers it up we must say enough,” he said. “He has compromised our elections and he will do so again.”

Colorado lawmaker Jason Crow, another House prosecutor, said impeachment was an “extraordinary remedy.”

“It is in the Constitution for a reason,” he said. “In America, nobody is above the law, even those elected president of the United States.”

Crow told the senators their votes would echo through history.

“What you decide on these articles will have lasting implications for the future of the presidency, not only for this president but for all future presidents,” he said.

Pelosi Says Senators Who Voted against Trial Witnesses Part of A Cover-Up

According To Iran News, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) ripped senators who voted against approving further witness testimony in the Senate’s impeachment trial against President Trump, saying the lawmakers were part of a “cover-up.”

“The Senate Republicans’ vote against calling witnesses and compelling documents in the impeachment proceedings makes them accomplices to the President’s cover-up,” she said in a statement, The Hill reported.

The Senate voted by a 51-49 margin to bar witnesses from appearing before the chamber in its impeachment investigation. Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Mitt Romney (Utah) were the only Republicans to join all 47 Democrats in voting to approve the witness measure.

The House impeached Trump on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in December over his dealings with Ukraine. Democrats said Trump inappropriately pressured Kyiv to investigate his political rivals, including former Vice President Joe Biden, and obstructed Congress by seeking to hamper subsequent probes into his conduct.

The House heard from several government officials, but were blocked by the White House from hearing from those close to Trump.

Republicans said the House should not have voted on the articles after what they said was an incomplete investigation.

“The House chose to send articles of impeachment that are rushed and flawed. I carefully considered the need for additional witnesses and documents, to cure the shortcomings of its process, but ultimately decided that I will vote against considering motions to subpoena,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who had been considered a swing vote on the witness measure.

However, Democrats argued that new evidence surfaced since the House’s December vote mandated further witness testimony. Among the most sought-after witnesses was former national security adviser John Bolton, who alleged in his upcoming memoir that Trump directly tied the withholding of $391 million in military aide to Ukraine to Kyiv’s willingness to conduct his requested investigations.

“It is a sad day for America to see Senator McConnell require the Chief Justice of the United States to preside over a vote which rejected our nation’s judicial norms, precedents and institutions to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law,” said Pelosi.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needled President Donald Trump in an interview Friday night saying ‘You are impeached forever’, noting that the stain of impeachment will always live on his presidency regardless of the outcome of the Senate trial.

“You are impeached forever,” Pelosi said with a smile on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

“No matter what the Senate does, it can never be erased,” The Hill wrote.

“If I knew that the president is listening, I would want him to know that he is impeached forever, and he is impeached forever because he used the office of the president to try to influence a foreign country for his personal and political benefit. In doing so, he undermined our national security, he was disloyal to his oath of office to protect the Constitution and he placed in jeopardy the integrity of our election,” she added later. “He gave us no choice.”

House Democrats voted this week to send two articles of impeachment to the Senate, which will commence its trial of Trump next week. The articles, which accuse the president of abuse of power over his dealings with Ukraine and obstruction of Congress, passed in a party-line vote last month.

Trump has maintained he did nothing wrong in his interactions with Ukraine, though several officials have testified that he acted improperly when he leveraged military aid and a White House meeting to pressure the Ukrainian president to investigate his political rivals. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) also said Thursday that the administration’s freezing of nearly $400 million in aid to Kyiv broke the law.

New evidence has emerged in the case since the articles’ passage in December, including documents from an associate of Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, indicating the president’s personal involvement in the efforts to pressure Ukraine. Former national security adviser John Bolton, who is believed to have intimate knowledge of the pressure campaign, has also said he would testify in front of the Senate if subpoenaed.

Pelosi, who has made similar comments about impeachment’s permanence in the past, said Friday night that Democrats had enough evidence last year to conduct their impeachment hearings but that new information only bolstered their case.

“The fact is that we knew we had a solid case for impeachment of the president. The facts were clear, the Constitution required it, and we wanted to make our case and go forward, so we put forth the articles of impeachment and in fact voted them,” she said.

“We knew there was plenty of other, should we say, information to come forward, but it wasn’t necessary to impeach the president. It would have been further incriminating, but not necessary, and it wouldn’t in any way weaken the case that had the support of my caucus and was completely understood by the American people.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House will introduce and vote on a war powers resolution this week to limit US President Donald Trump’s military actions against Iran.

“This resolution on war powers is similar to the resolution introduced by Senator Tim Kaine in the Senate,” US House speaker said in a statement late on Sunday, Reuters reported.

“It reasserts Congress’s long-established oversight responsibilities by mandating that if no further Congressional action is taken, the Administration’s military hostilities with regard to Iran cease within 30 days.”

The resolution is likely to win approval in the Democratic-led House, but prospects for passage are less certain in the Senate, which is controlled by Trump’s fellow Republicans, many of whom have said they support the president’s action on Iran.

It came as Iraq’s parliament called for the US and other foreign troops to leave as the backlash against the US killing on Friday of a top Iranian general grew, and Trump doubled down on threats to target Iranian cultural sites if Iran retaliates.

Trump also threatened sanctions against Iraq and said that if US troops were required to leave, Iraq’s government would have to pay Washington for the cost of a “very extraordinarily expensive” airbase there

Commander of IRGC Quds Force General Qassem Soleimani, the deputy head of Iraq’s Hashd al-Shaabi, and a number of their entourage were killed in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of Friday.

The White House and the Pentagon confirmed the assassination of General Soleimani in Iraq, saying the attack was carried out at the direction of Trump.

In a message on Friday morning, the Leader warned that harsh revenge awaits the criminals behind the martyrdom of General Soleimani.

Ayatollah Khamenei also reminded all friends and enemies of the Iranian general that the resistance path will continue vigorously, stressing that continued battle and ultimate victory will disappoint the murderers and criminals.
