TEHRAN (Iran News) In a statement released on Sunday, Esmaeil Baqaei abhorred the Zionist regime’s anti-human crimes and massacre of people in Palestine and Lebanon, including the latest fatal strikes on a mosque in Deir el-Balah and on residential buildings in Beirut’s Dahiyeh.

He said the Israeli regime’s recent attacks, carried out with the weapons supplied by the US, against the holy sites, schools, mosques and medical centers of Palestine and Lebanon are reminiscent of the crimes committed by the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group.

“The killing of civilians and destruction of civil sites and infrastructures are an indispensable part of ideologies of Zionism and Takfirism,” the spokesman said.

The relentless massacre of displaced Palestinians who have taken shelter in sanctuaries or cultural and medical centers amounts to blatant war crimes and crimes against humanity, Baqaei stated, urging the international community to act seriously and effectively against the “Hitler of new age, namely Netanyahu and the criminal heads of the Zionist regime.”

The Iranian spokesman also cautioned that the Israeli regime’s policy of fomenting insecurity in the region poses a serious threat to international peace and stability, saying inaction in the face of such Israeli crimes will have irreparable consequences for the whole regional countries and beyond.

He finally called on all countries, particularly the Muslim nations, to employ their great potential to deliver immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza and Lebanon and counter the Zionist regime’s policy of terror and regional insecurity.

Israeli strikes on Ibn Rushd school and Al-Aqsa Martyrs Mosque in central Gaza have killed at least 26 Palestinians, as Israel intensified its bombardment of northern Gaza and southern Beirut in its widening war across the region.

The strike hit the mosque and school where displaced people were sheltering near the main hospital in the central town of Deir el-Balah.

The Israeli regime, meanwhile, announced a new air and ground offensive in Jabalia in northern Gaza, home to a densely-populated refugee camp dating back to the 1948 war.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday joined the first Muslim Friday prayers attended by thousands in Hagia Sophia since the reconversion of the iconic Istanbul cathedral into a mosque.c

The highest administrative court revoked Hagia Sophia, the sixth-century monument’s status as a museum on July 10 and Erdogan then ordered the building to reopen for Muslim prayers, AFP wrote.

Wearing an Islamic skullcap, Erdogan recited a verse from the Holy Qur’an before the call to prayer was heard from the four minarets of Hagia Sophia. Then Ali Erbas, the head of the state religious affairs directorate, delivered the sermon, which was broadcast live on Turkish news channels.

There was such a large flow of people keen to take part in the prayer, Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said on Friday morning the spaces in and around Hagia Sophia were swiftly filled.

Aynur Saatci, 49, described it as a “historic moment”, saying she was on holiday in Erzurum, eastern Turkey, but came back for the event.

“I immediately cut my holiday short and returned to Istanbul as soon as I knew we could pray in Hagia Sophia,” Saatci said. “I’m deeply moved.”

“This is the moment when Turkey breaks its chains. Now it can do whatever it wants, without having to submit to the West,” Selahattin Aydas, from Germany, said.

“We’ve been waiting for this for years. I’m very happy. There might be sanctions against Turkey because of this, or the number of tourists may fall but that doesn’t change anything for me,” Hatip, who manages a souvenir shop near Hagia Sophia, said.

In Greece, churches were in “mourning” with their bells around the country pealed at midday to protest the reconversion.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – New Zealand police and security services were warned of a threat against another mosque for the same day that a gunman killed 51 Muslim worshippers in Christchurch in 2019, an Islamic women’s group told an inquiry into the shooting massacre.”

The Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand said it warned police and security services repeatedly about threats from white supremacists, including when they received a Facebook message threatening to burn the Quran outside a mosque in Hamilton on March 15, 2019, the same day as the Christchurch attack.

Although the threat was not directly connected to the mass shooting, extra security measures could have been taken at all mosques, said the submission to the closed-door inquiry which was made public on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

“The police had enough intelligence to warrant a coordinated national strategy,” the group said in the 130-page submission.

“If there had been such a strategy, then the message would have alerted every mosque in the country to a threat to one mosque on Friday 15 March 2019 and for all mosques to take extra security measures. Whether or not the threat was connected to the Christchurch killer is irrelevant.”

Armed with semi-automatic weapons, Australian Brenton Tarrant, a suspected white supremacist, attacked two mosques in Christchurch on March 15, 2019, broadcasting New Zealand’s worst mass shooting live on Facebook.

Tarrant has pleaded guilty and a court will begin his sentencing on Aug 24.

The Islamic Women’s Council submission said police, security services and government representatives were focused only on combating terrorism by extremists, leaving the community vulnerable to the rising alt-right movement.

“Evidence indicates that public sector employees were, at best, asleep on the job and, at worst, intentionally

Ignoring our pleas and actively undermining our work,” Aliya Danzeisen, who leads the group’s government engagement, said in a statement.

Police said no comment would be made until the Royal Commission had concluded. However, on the specific threat in the report it said the person was identified and formally warned.

A government spokesman said the government will wait for the Commission’s report before making any comment.

The Royal Commission inquiry into the shooting massacre is due report its finding by end of July.

Threats to the Muslim community have continued since the attack, with a threatening social media post appearing earlier this year.

New Zealand, unlike the United States or Britain, has never recorded specific hate crime offenses, raising questions about what signs security agencies may have missed.

Islamic Women’s Council estimates there would not be a Muslim woman in New Zealand who wears the headscarf who has not been abused in public at some time.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Holy shrines in Iran will reopen as of Monday and pilgrims can visit the religious sites from sunrise to sunset after a months-long hiatus in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, President Hassan Rouhani announced.

Speaking at a Saturday meeting of Iran Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, Rouhani said the holy shrines across the country will reopen a day after Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the month of Ramadan.

The custodians of the holy shrines have announced their readiness to open the religious sites to pilgrims from sunrise to sunset, but congregational prayers will not be held in the sites, the president noted.

During the opening hours, pilgrims must observe the health instructions and will not be allowed to stay for long, Rouhani added.

The president also noted that upon a decision from the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, museums across Iran will reopen as of Sunday, while plans for the reopening of mosques and shopping centers will be discussed next week.

He further stressed that Iran has passed three stages in tackling the coronavirus epidemic and has now entered the fourth stage, which is the containment of the disease.

“In this stage, we will proceed with diagnosis activities using diagnostic kits and other devices to separate the infected people from others.”

The Iranian administration had announced earlier that restaurants across the country will reopen after Ramadan within the framework of health regulations.

Universities will be also reopening as of June 6, and sports matches will take place without spectators.

The Health Ministry said on Friday the number of people infected with COVID-19 in Iran has surpassed 131,600, of whom more than 102,000 have fully recovered from the disease.

Zero deaths were reported in 14 provinces on Friday.

Located in the historic centre of Isfahan, the Masjed-e Jame (‘Friday mosque’) can be seen as a stunning illustration of the evolution of mosque architecture over twelve centuries, starting in AD 841.

It is the oldest preserved edifice of its type in Iran and a prototype for later mosque designs throughout Central Asia. The complex, covering more than 20,000 m2, is also the first Islamic building that adapted the four-courtyard layout of Sassanid palaces to Islamic religious architecture.

Its double-shelled ribbed domes represent an architectural innovation that inspired builders throughout the region. The site also features remarkable decorative details representative of stylistic developments over more than a thousand years of Islamic art.

Masjed-e Jame’ is the oldest Friday (congregational) mosque in Iran, located in the historical centre of Isfahan. The monument illustrates a sequence of architectural construction and decorative styles of different periods in Iranian Islamic architecture, covering 12 centuries, most predominantly the Abbasid, Buyid, Seljuq, Ilkhanid, Muzzafarid, Timurid and Safavid eras.

Following its Seljuq expansion and the characteristic introduction of the four iwans (Chahar Ayvān) around the courtyard as well as two extraordinary domes, the mosque became the prototype of a distinctive Islamic architectural style.

The prototype character is well illustrated in the earliest double-shell ribbed Nezam al-Molk dome, the first use of the four iwan (Chahar Ayvān) typology in Islamic architecture, as well as the textbook character of the Masjed-e Jame’ as a compilation of Islamic architectural styles. The Masjed-e Jame’ of Isfahan is an outstanding example of innovation in architectural adaptation and technology applied during the restoration and expansion of an earlier mosque complex during the Seljuq era, which has been further enlarged during later Islamic periods by addition of high quality extensions and decoration.

Masjed-e Jame is the first Islamic building that adapted the four iwan (Chahar Ayvān) courtyard layout of Sassanid palaces to Islamic religious architecture and thereby became the prototype construction for a new layout and aesthetic in mosque design.

The Nezam al-Molk Dome is the first double-shell ribbed dome structure in the Islamic empire, which introduced new engineering skills, allowing for more elaborate dome constructions in later mosque and burial complexes. On the basis of these two elements, the Masjed-e Jame is a recognized prototype for mosque design, layout and dome construction, which was referenced in several later eras and regions of the Islamic world.

Most elements of the mosque, in particular the four iwans and the Malek al-Molk and Taj al-Molk domes, are authentic in material, design and location. Restorations and a reconstruction, which became necessary following an air raid in 1984, were carried out to an adequate standard, using traditional craftsmanship and materials. One of the most important aspects of authenticity is the function of the Masjed-e Jame’ of Isfahan, both as a mosque, which continues to be used for prayers, and as a component of the Isfahan historic bazaar fabric.

Attached to and accessed from the street network of the bazaar area, the mosque has a significant setting, the authenticity of which is highly vulnerable to changes in urban character. To respect the authenticity of spirit and feeling, the museum function of Masjed-e Jame’ has to remain sensitive to its religious use, both in terms of information panel design and visitor numbers.

TEHRAN – The name of Masjed-e Nou (new mosque) was the Atabak Mosque in older times. However, since it was damaged several times in the years 1789 CE and 1852 CE by severe earthquakes, and was rebuilt, it became known as new mosque.

It is located in Shiraz, in Iran’s southern province of Fars.

In fact, it is the largest mosque, which has been built in Iran, for its compound alone measures 148.50 meters by 47.90 meters, so has an area of 11,122.65 square meters.

If the area covered by the buildings which form the domes, pillared halls and colonnades of the mosque be included with the compound, the total area will be 19,599.78 square meters.

According to irangazette.com, the first building was established by Atabak Sa’d bin Zangi, ruler of Fars, in 1201 CE and was completed in 1218 CE.

Lofty porches (iwan) have been built on all four sides of the mosque. Those on the north and south are flanked by a colonnade of 12 arches of smaller proportions, but the eastern and western porches are flanked by six arches on either side. There is a great and wide pillared hall behind the southern porch ― used for prayer and preaching in the summer.

The present mosque is devoid of all decoration and faience that is worth noticing, but from the point of architecture the barreled roofs, and especially the porches with their great height attract attention and are impressive. It may be supposed that the original building was decorated with colored tiles, which were destroyed by the several earthquakes, and that subsequent builders did not concern themselves with replacing the faience.

Nou Mosque attracts the Sun in the winter, and has shade and pleasant air in the summer. The old plane trees in the middle of the mosque add to the cool and fresh atmosphere.

As the author of the Farsnameh-ye Naseri writes, this mosque has been repaired and restored several times. It was repaired upon the order of Shah Navaz Khan, chief minister of the Deccan in India, in 1586 CE. About 180 years later, Sadeq Khan ―the brother of Zand King Karim Khan ―renovated the mosque. Afterwards, the mosque was destroyed by severe earthquake. Ali Akbar Qavam-ol-Molk Shirazi undertook the restoration in 1854 CE.

Atabak Sa’d bin Zangi, the builder of the Nou Mosque is the same ruler who built a mosque around the tomb of Cyrus in Pasargad, where the lintel stone over the main entrance still bears the date and name of the builder, but the other parts have been demolished.

Great poet Sa’di lived during the rule of Atabak Sa’d bin Zangi.
