Iraq’s Parliament Speaker Condemns Anti-Iran Sanctions

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The speaker of Iraq’s parliament, Mohammed Al-Halbousi, condemned the sanctions imposed on Iran, also saying the stability of Iraq and Iran is integrated.
In a meeting with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in Turkey on Tuesday, Halbousi said his country is opposed to foreign sanctions against Iran and condemns them.

Voicing the Iraqi parliament’s willingness to broaden ties with Iran, Halbousi stressed the need to protect the sovereignty of regional countries and oppose policies and sanctions dictated by outsiders.

The stability of Iran and other neighbors would directly impact Iraq’s stability, he added.

Pledging Iraq’s support for the Iranian government and nation, Halbousi said closer economic relations would serve the mutual interests and reduce the pressure of sanctions on Iran.

The Iraqi speaker also praised Iran for supporting his country in the fight against terrorism and defeat of the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

For his part, Larijani said hostile attempts to ruin ties between Iran and Iraq are doomed to failure, since post-Saddam Iraq has always been a supporter of the Islamic Republic.

He also expressed Iran’s readiness to promote economic, industrial, and agricultural cooperation with Iraq.

Accompanied by a delegation of Iranian lawmakers, Larijani took part in the 3rd Meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries’ Parliaments in Antalya.

The conference was attended by 20 parliament speakers and parliamentary delegations from 17 Asian and European nations.

The Iranian speaker returned to Tehran on Tuesday night.

Iran congratulates al-Halbousi’s election as new Iraqi parl. speaker

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman as well as the speaker of the Parliament Larijani have congratulated Sunni lawmaker Mohammed al-Halbousi on his election as the new speaker of Iraqi parliament.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi as well as Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani congratulated Mohammed al-Halbousi on his election as speaker of Iraqi Parliament. The messages were issued a few hours after the voting finished on Saturday afternoon.

Ghasemi said in his message that “the Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported democracy, territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Iraq and now once again announces its support for the decisions of elected representatives of the people.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman further added that Iran believes “the election of the speaker of the parliament is an important and necessary step on the path to form a new Iraqi government.”

He also expressed hope to see the election of Iraq’s president and prime minister soon, which would pave the way for the formation of a new elected Iraqi government.

Separately, the Iranian Parliament speaker, Ali Larijani, also hailed the good relations between Iran and Iraq, especially between the two countries’ parliaments, over the past years, expressing hope for further expansion of ties during al-Halbousi’s term.

Larijani went on to say that the Iranian government and Parliament hold the great Iraqi people in high regard, wishing them the establishment of security and prosperity.
