Nat’l Information Network Is Not to Cut Connection to Internet

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi, says by launching the national information network it is not to cut the country’s connection to the internet and it is a wrong notion among the public.

Speaking on the sidelines of the government meeting yesterday, Azari-Jahromi defended the country’s efforts for launching the national information network, adding that people are wrong who think by launching this network, country’s connection with the international internet will be cut.

The National Information Network is an independent domestic network which enables Iranians to communicate without reliance on international Internet hubs.

The national scheme comprises several projects including but not limited to the expansion of the local fiber optic network, installation of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and giving a boost to Content Delivery Networks (CDNs).

He added that recent disruption in the international system and especially in the WhatsApp application was because of the problem in the application’s own server. He added that Amazon Company which is in charge of transfer of data to Iranian users had imposed some restrictions which were resolved. He reiterated there is no disruption in the internet system.

On the problems of the domestic applications, he said they should improve their quality in case more users rush to use the applications.

Azari-Jahromi added that the ministry will support the education ministry for online education during the Coronavirus pandemic and will ease access to the internet services.

He added that all 1,100 universities and academic centers will be connected to the optical fiber in order to make education for free.

Most Advanced Domestically-Made Satellite Completed

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

TEHRAN – ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said on Monday that the final tests of the country’s most advanced domestically-made satellite have been carried out.

Azari Jahromi made the remarks speaking during a visit to an exhibition in the Iranian capital where the country’s latest indigenized information technology achievements were put on display.

He said that Pars-1 Satellite will be delivered to the Iranian Space Agency next week.

From now on the experts of the Iranian Space Agency will focus on the construction of Nahid-2 Satellite which is a telecommunication satellite, the minister said.

Pars-1 Satellite is capable of taking images in the space at night.

Meanwhile yesterday Azari Jahromi said that domestic producers must keep on with up to date technology and try to gain markets overseas.

He said that technical knowledge of production to increase productivity is available inside our country.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of an exhibition to introduce achievements of indigenous advanced equipment in the National Information Network.

The minister called software planning and creativity as two essential production elements and stressed that these elements are available in Iran.

He went on to say that decreasing the price of local productions is essential, meaning that the cost of local products must be less than foreign ones.

Azari-Jahromi also urged companies to pay attention to after-sale services.

Dynamic technology is another factor that should not be neglected by domestic producers. To achieve this goal, research and development sections must not stop expanding their products and compete with foreign companies.

Referring to the local production’s security aspect, the minister stressed that local production is used to prevent enemies from accessing information, especially the military and defense infrastructures.

The production line of an indigenous cell phone in Maragheh city was kicked off, hoping that it reaches mass production soon, the official concluded.

This has been done as part of a project, jointly underway by the Iranian Ministry of ICT and the Ministry of Education, to increase the number of smart schools in the country, IRNA reported.

In July 2019, an MoU was signed between the two Iranian ministries to raise the number of smart schools in the country in a ceremony on the sidelines of the 25th Iran International Exhibition of Electronic Computer and E-Commerce (ELECOMP).

In an address to that ceremony, Iranian ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi had said as stipulated in Iran’s Sixth Economic Development Plan (2017-22), the Ministry of Education should take serious steps to raise the number of the country’s smart schools, particularly in deprived areas.

Commenting on the implementation of the MoU on Sunday, Azari Jahromi said as per the agreement, the Ministry of ICT is responsible for connecting Iran schools to the NIN as the first step in the process of implementing the project.

He added equipping schools with the required infrastructure is the second step which is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education.

The other part of the project is creating smart systems that are jointly underway by the Information Technology Organization of Iran and the Ministry of Education.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Communication and IT Minister, Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi announced that Iran will send into the orbit its new home-made satellite, ‘Zafar (Victory)’, before February 11 (the 41st anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution of 1979 in Iran).

“This satellite (Zafar) will be launched before February 11 and the related information will be declared transparently,” Azari Jahromi told reporters in Tehran on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting.

He added that Zafar will be launched on the back of Simorq carrier, adding that a copy of Zafar has also been manufactured to be launched immediately if efforts to send the first satellite into the orbit fail.

Azari Jahromi had announced last Sunday that Iran was gearing up to send two state-of-the-art home-grown satellites, like Zafar, into orbit, adding that the two spacecraft have been delivered to the Iran Space Agency (ISA).

“The Zafar 1 and 2 satellites, which have been designed by Iranian scientists, have successfully passed their tests and their launch process will commence soon,” Azari Jahromi said in a tweet.

He described the developments of these satellites and their launchers as a great step in the country’s space program, saying, “Two versions of Zafar have been built by young Iranian scientists, both of which are technologically superior to those we had built before.”

Zafar, a fully sophisticated satellite built at Iran’s University of Science and Technology, was announced by the ISA on Saturday to have been placed atop the ready-to-launch list.

The new satellite, designed for an 18-month activity plan, weighs about 90 kilograms and is equipped with four color cameras to capture the Earth’s surface with a resolution of 80 meters.

Zafar is similar in size and weight to its previous version — the Payam satellite — but distinct in one way as it can move in a circular orbit and send a message alongside its exploratory missions.

In January 2019, the domestically-built Payam (Message) satellite was launched into space with an aim to collect environmental information; however, technical problems that occurred during the final stage of the launch prevented the spacecraft from reaching orbit.

Iran’s indigenous satellite launch capabilities first made headlines when the first locally-built satellite, Omid (Hope), was launched in 2009.

The country also sent its first bio-capsule containing living creatures into space in February 2010, using a Kavoshgar-3 (Explorer-3) carrier.

In February 2015, the Islamic Republic placed its domestically-made Fajr (Dawn) satellite into orbit, which is capable of taking and transmitting high-quality photos to stations on Earth.

Iran considers its space program a matter of national pride and has said its space vehicle launches are for scientific purposes.

Last month, Head ISA Morteza Barari said that his country is holding negotiations with a country with advanced space technology to jointly send scientist astronauts to space.

Barari said that the ISA has commenced plans for cooperation with what he called an ‘advanced country’ to send scientist astronauts to space.

“The talks are underway, and we hope to reach an agreement with one of the countries to commence the project.”

Barari declined to name the country with which the ISA is in talks about the project before the talks have been finalized.

“With the cooperation of this country, we are aiming to send a scientist-astronaut instead of a space tourist. Our goal is to participate in international projects; that is, to have an Iranian scientist present in the Earth’s orbit or a space station to take part in international research projects,” he added.

“The process of talks must be carried out fully. Once done, we will announce the schedule for the implementation of the project in the near future,” he said.

The Iranian scientists have in recent years made astonishing progress in the development of the country’s space program.

Tehran Preparing for Launch of Satellites Into Orbit

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

Iran said Sunday that two newly constructed satellites have passed pre-launch tests and will be transported to the nation’s space center for eventual launch, without elaborating.

Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi tweeted about the development, calling it an “important research step.”

Iran has not said when it will launch the satellites, but often coordinates its launches with national holidays.

It will celebrate the 41st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution next month.

Jahromi said two Zafar (Victory) satellites have successfully passed tests and will soon be launched into space.

In a post on his Twitter account on Sunday, Jahromi said the Zafar 1 and 2 satellites were being carried later in the day to the space center in central Iran for launch.

“Following attempts by young Iranian scientists, the Zafar 1 and 2 satellites, which have successfully passed their tests, will be deployed to the space center today so that the process for putting them in orbit can commence soon,” he said. “The satellite and the satellite carrier are both an important research step.”

He also wished success for the whole project.

Zafar, designed by Iran University of Science and Technology, is a 113-kilogram remote-sensing satellite equipped with high-resolution cameras capable of monitoring and transmitting data on natural resources as well as agricultural and environmental developments.

It is likely to be launched by Simorgh, also called Safir-2, an expendable small-capacity orbital carrier rocket.

The Zafar 1 satellite, which will be placed 500 kilometers above the earth’s surface, can orbit the planet 16 times a day, each taking 90 minutes.

The difference between Zafar 1 and Zafar 2 is that the latter is equipped with color cameras.

In September 2019, the U.S. Treasury slapped sanctions on the Iran Space Agency, Iran Space Research Center and the Astronautics Research Institute.

At the time, the ICT minister posted a photo of the galaxy on his Twitter account and wrote, “I can’t even locate the U.S. in this picture, let alone sanctions on Space! The universe & #BrightFuture belong to everyone, not to a few!”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran ICT minister, Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi on Monday decried the United States’ sanctioning of nations as its “addiction” to embargoes.

Azari-Jahromi made the remark after the US administration imposed sanctions on him on Friday under the pretext of the minister’s role in Internet shutdown in the country following days of protests over fuel price hikes, according to IRNA.

He said that his ministry had no role in shutting down the telecommunications link during the unrest in the country, describing the US claims as lies.

If the US wants to expand Iranians’ access to information, “Why Iranian start-ups, businesses, and programmers have been deprived of so many requirements for their jobs in the field of technology?” he asked.

The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control added Azari Jahromi to its sanctions list that would freeze any of his property under US jurisdiction and prohibit Americans from any deals involving those assets.

It claimed that the Iranian minister had advanced a policy of “repressive Internet censorship,” a reference to a nationwide Internet shutdown during recent unrest after the government decided to raise gasoline prices.

In a post on his Twitter account on Friday, Azari Jahromi responded to the sanctions, saying the US had already targeted “ICT startups, Developers, Cancer patients and EB children.”

Iran ICT minister also pledged to keep advocating access to the Internet and not allow the US to prohibit Iran’s development.

Iran Raps US Sanctions on ICT Minister

According To Iran News, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson condemned the US move to impose sanctions on Iranian Minister of Communication and Information Technology Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi.

In a statement on Saturday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi denounced the “US regime’s sanctions” against Azari Jahromi for his role in what Washington has described as “widescale internet censorship” during the recent wave of foreign-backed riots that hit a number of Iranian cities as a result of fuel price hikes.

“It is clear to everyone that the current US administration places no value on democratic principles and values, transparency and human rights, including free (access to the) Internet for others,” Mousavi said.

He said a review of the US administration’s record shows that directors of major social networks and communication companies, such as Twitter, have been pressured into silencing the critics, adding that such a policy reveals Washington’s “political and instrumental” approach to free Internet access.

On Friday, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin accused Azari Jahromi of advancing Tehran’s policy of “internet censorship” while in office.

“We are sanctioning Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for restricting internet access, including to popular messaging applications that help tens of millions of Iranians stay connected to each other and the outside world,” he said.

The Supreme National Security Council of Iran has implemented a partial shutdown of internet services since a week ago, after the outbreak of protests that turned violent in a number of cities.

Iran’s ICT minister reacts to new US sanctions imposed on him

According To Iran News, Iranian Information and Communications Technology Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said he is not the first person to be designated by US administration.

“I’m not the only member of the club of sanctioned persons (Based on Trump’s fairytales). Before me, Iran ICT startups, Developers, Cancer patients and EB children were there,” Jahromi tweeted on Friday night, hours after US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said it took action against Jahromi for his role in the “widescale internet censorship” in Iran.

“I’ll continue advocating access to Internet & I won’t let US prohibit Iran development,” added the Iranian minister while also tagging #EconomicTerrorism.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council ordered internet blackout on Saturday to block rioters from coordinating their activities in large cities. The Iranian government raised gasoline prices on November 15 in order to moderate the national consumption rate which prompted some peaceful protests, but riotous elements took advantage of the situation and caused damage to public property.

For example, in 2017-18 Tehran’s judiciary banned the popular Telegram messaging service [at one time perhaps 60% of the entire population of Iran were using the Telegram app], something President Rouhani himself labeled as “the direct opposite of democracy.” Mr. Jahromi concurs with this, asserting that such restrictions are counterproductive, and undermine Iran’s political and economic interests.

“We have to admit the fact that we have weakness in this field,” Jahromi said. And then, when asked by Holt if Iran was losing the “propaganda war,” the young communications czar said: “Yes, we have lost it.”

In other words, while the United States and Israeli governments are relentlessly blasting Iran via vacuous and deeply mendacious throw-away lines such as “Iran is the world’s largest state sponsor of terror,” Iran, says the astute Mr. Jahromi, has not effectively countered this false thesis with an effective rebuttal campaign that could indeed be propelled by social media.

The good news for Iran is, in spite of whatever shortcomings in Tehran’s messaging, the American people are broadly opposed to any conflict with Iran and do not support any Trump-led efforts toward war. According to a recent Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey, 57 percent of voters opposed “military confrontation with Iran” unless Iran first attacked the United States. Only five percent of respondents wanted the United States to “declare war on Iran,” and indeed, 78 percent of voters approved of Trump’s decision to call off any retaliatory strike after Iran downed an unmanned U.S. Air Force RQ-4A Global Hawk surveillance drone earlier this summer.

The bad news for Iran is, the American people seem not to understand the effect or rationale for sanctions on Tehran, and certainly not even 2 Americans in every 100 know much of anything about the history of American meddling there, let alone that it dates at least to 1953. Most Americans are utterly oblivious of any part, let alone the entirety, of a long record of cruel American actions against Iranian citizens across time. But this record is long and despicable, alas, and includes, among other things, support of a repressive regime; an asset freeze and economic blockade; aid for an unprovoked Iraqi invasion against Iran in a horrific war that included Saddam Hussein’s deployment of American-supplied chemical weapons against Iranian troops and civilians; the shoot-down of Iran Air Flight #655; and ultimately, more sanctions, cyber-warfare attacks such as the Stuxnet virus, and assistance with Israeli moves against Iran that have included assassinations of innocent scientists.

This 7-decade history of U.S. meddling preceded Mr. Trump’s unprecedented and completely unwarranted abrogation of the Iran Nuclear Deal, or JCPOA, which featured the most comprehensive and intrusive inspections regime in the history of arms control, and was enshrined, as a matter of international law, in U.N. Security Council Resolution #2231. All the details of this, and the illegal American breach of #2231, would be new news to the vast majority of the American people, a fact which alone confirms that Iran has lost the “public relations war” vis-à-vis the false propaganda promulgated by the American and Israeli governments and biased media organs.

How Iran can turn the tide of American public opinion

Righteous morality and truth are on the side of the Iranians vis-à-vis the American and Israeli position here, but time may not be: coming out of recession in 2015 as the Nuclear Deal was signed, the Iranian economy exploded with 13.4% real GDP growth in 2016, according to the World Bank, followed by nearly 4% growth in 2017, as nervousness over what President Trump might do began to crimp inbound foreign investment and trade. And indeed, economic contraction has returned to Iran in 2018-19 as the deal collapsed and the Americans effectively quarantined the Iranian economy.

It is therefore a propitious moment to recapture the high ground in the campaign to change American opinion about Iran, utilizing the very best weapons possible in such an effort: the truth, and the moral superiority of Iran’s position. Changing public opinion in America will all by itself end the insanity of the Trump Administration’s morally obtuse policy set on Iran, and begin the path toward normalized relations. Here’s how this can happen, perhaps more quickly than many would believe:

    Invite a comprehensive list of American policymakers and opinion influencers to Iran for a 7 to 10 day visit, to detail before them a retrospective history of U.S./Iran relations and in particular, the recent years of economic deprivation and the harm they have caused to Iranian living standards, as well as meet with Iranian government officials and business leaders, up to and including President Rouhani himself.

  The list of attendees could include the following, or people like them:

   Politicians: Senator Rand Paul and his father, former Congressman Ron Paul; U.S. Army Major Tulsi Gabbard and U.S. Navy Admiral Joe Sestak, sitting and former U.S. Congressmen, respectively, and both current Democratic presidential candidates; former U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta; former President of the United States Barack Obama [Obama’s stature may require he come to Iran separately, but there is high likelihood he would accept an invitation to go to Tehran, especially if meeting the Supreme Leader and/or President];

   Armed Forces Veterans: U.S. Army 4-star General Barry McCaffrey [now an NBC News analyst]; U.S. Army Colonels Andrew Bacevich [Quincy Institute], Douglas Macgregor [Fox News], and Lawrence Wilkerson [William and Mary, MSNBC];

   Major Media: Tucker Carlson [Fox News]; Anderson Cooper [CNN]; Rachel Maddow [MSNBC], and others;

  Commentators: Philip Giraldi [ex-CIA, Council for the National Interest], Daniel Larison [The American Conservative]; Gideon Levy [Haaretz]; Elijah Magnier [Al Rai Media Group]; John Pilger/Gareth Porter, well-known independent journalists; Trita Parsi [Quincy Institute];

Business community: Former Chairman of Exxon Mobil and former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson

This list is hardly exhaustive, and could include dozens more names of influential media commentators, economists, and American business professionals especially; certainly, all major worldwide media outlets’ general news reporting functions, similar to Lester Holt’s capacity [and as opposed to media opinion/commentary people, per above] would be invited and likely cover the event.

   The goal of such a conference in Tehran would be simple: tell Iran’s “side of the story” in excruciating detail to a wide expanse of American public opinion-makers, who will in turn return to the United States and relay Iran’s history, perspective, and the facts which are uniformly favorable to Tehran. Further, the very convening of such a meeting with high-profile American attendees would draw major media coverage on a global basis.

Iran’s message to the Americans, conveyed in person by Foreign Minister Zarif and others including, say, the gifted English-speaking analyst at the University of Tehran, Professor Seyed Mohammad Marandi, is a simple one:

  Here’s the history of Iran’s foreign policy, that includes no invasion of foreign soil since the Persian leader Nader Shah attacked India’s Mughal  Empire in 1738;

   Actual history of U.S./Iran relations, dating to 1953;

   Record of American cruelties, in detail;

   List of instances where Iran has helped, or tried to help, the Americans [e.g., after 9/11, cooperation vis-à-vis the Taliban, or al Qaeda];

  Recitation of Iran’s national defense strategy, the security challenges facing Iran, and Iran’s legitimate right of self-defense [also detail how American arms exports into the region and the American presence have destabilized the region].

   Snapshot of the Islamic Republic of Iran today [e.g., democratic system of governance; role and opportunities for women in society, from business ownership to automobile driving to academic pursuit to political process participation; respect for minority religions including Christianity and Judaism which is highly unique in the Muslim world; and, entrepreneurial-driven market economy and institutions of banking/finance/insurance and private property ownership], and why and how Iran is different from so many of its neighbors.

The U.S. government well might, once word spread of such a convened meeting in Tehran, seek to stop it. But the high profile of invitees would prevent this, and the very momentum this alone would give the meeting would only further ensure intense global media coverage. Iran’s demand is a simple one: the threat of an insane war in the region is very real, beyond insane and needless, but very easy to prevent. For this to happen, the Islamic Republic deserves the respect and morally proper treatment accorded all legitimate governments of the world, especially one as democratic as is the regime in Tehran, and this should entail immediate cessation of all economic sanctions and a return to normalization and full trade and diplomatic relations with the rest of the world. A regional multi-lateral dialogue of the kind currently being pursued by Foreign Minister Zarif could then ensue, with the region’s inhabitants deciding how to solve regional challenges.

Where there are American allegations of human rights abuses, government corruption, or malfeasance within the Iranian government or economy, these should be addressed head-on, rather than avoided; this would only earn the admiration of the audience.

Such a conference [as well as, perhaps, a few ancillary smaller meetings such as one especially for President Obama], held in Iran, with many high profile participants and thus covered widely by global media outlets, would be, as Americans say, a “home run” for Iran.

Coupled with a newly-sustained effort at global media outreach by Tehran, it would lead to a viral spreading of the truth and about American policies toward Iran which have been nothing short of a disgrace over time. It would be a dagger in the plans of any kinetic conflict currently housed in the fevered brains of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his friends, and would be an accelerant to an end to the American-led economic blockade of Iran, something history will, in the fullness of time, rightly regard as a corrupt outrage.
