The OnePlus 6T is now official – and it is shaping up as the company’s most important phone yet. As previous OnePlus models, the 6T stands out with an impressive specs sheet. It comes with a better display, a better camera, a bigger battery, and a more refined design – all at a decent price. But what truly makes the OnePlus 6T special is that it is the first of the company’s phones to launch through a US carrier, namely T-Mobile.

Design

The OnePlus 6T isn’t all that different from most high-end smartphones you can buy today. It is made of glass and metal, while nearly all of its front is occupied by an immersive display. But a closer look reveals that the glass in use is Gorilla Glass 6, Corning’s latest blend of scratch-resistant glass.

We’re glad to see that OnePlus is holding on to its alert slider – a handy physical switch on the side that lets you quickly put your phone on vibrate or mute. The fingerprint reader has been removed from the back, however, and we’ll see why in a bit. What’s also missing is a 3.5mm headphone jack, but you do get an adapter in the box. Water resistance has not been implemented either.

In case you like bright, flashy colors… we’re sorry to say that the OnePlus 6T only comes in two shades – matte or glossy black. You can take a pretty good look at the handset in our OnePlus 6T hands-on.

Bigger display, smaller notch

As expected, the OnePlus 6T comes with a notched display, but the notch itself is one of the smallest in the industry. It only houses the front-facing camera – there’s no fancy 3D face-scanning hardware here – while the razor-thin earpiece slit rests above it. If you find yourself bothered by this particular design feature, there’s the option to “hide” the notch by applying a black background to the display area on its sides.

For those who like numbers: the OnePlus 6T has a 6.41-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2340 by 1080 pixels (402ppi). This is the largest screen on a OnePlus phone so far, but the resolution is nearly identical to that on the OnePlus 6. In other words, display sharpness won’t be industry-leading, as many phones have already broken the 500ppi mark. On the other hand, sticking to 1080p resolution should help with overall performance, so it’s not a bad tradeoff.

In-display fingerprint scanner

Before we dive into under-the-hood hardware specifics, we must highlight the OnePlus 6T’s outstanding feature – its in-display fingerprint reader. That’s right: the phone has an actual fingerprint reader built seamlessly into the display – and it unlocks the phone in as little as a third of second, OnePlus claims.

The sensor appears to be of the optical variety, meaning that light from the display illuminates your finger as it is being read. This is the same technology utilized in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, so it’s not entirely new. However, the OnePlus 6T will be the first phone launched in the US with this feature on board. The reader can be used for Android Pay transactions, in case you’re wondering.

If you’re not a fan of the reader for some reason, the OnePlus 6T also has the same Face Unlock feature found on the 6 and 5T before it.

Processor and memory

Hardly a surprise, the OnePlus 6T comes with the best Snapdragon chip available right now: the Snapdragon 845. This is the same chip powering many of this year’s Android flagship devices, including the Galaxy S9, LG G7, and Sony Xperia XZ3. The OnePlus 6T will be available in three memory configurations: a base model packing 6GB of RAM and a generous 128GB of storage, a mid-tier model with 8GB+128GB of memory, and a premium variant boasting 8GB+256GB for all your needs. Memory expansion is not available.

Software: Android Pie meets OxygenOS

OnePlus phones are acclaimed for their speed, and that speed comes not only from the raw power of their hardware. OxygenOS – the company’s custom user interface – is made to be as smooth as possible, all while providing a clean, bloat-free experience. Kudos to OnePlus for launching the 6T with Android 9.0 Pie out of the box!

Gesture navigation was something we had a taste of when reviewing the OnePlus 6. All in all, using those instead of buttons does free up valuable screen space, but there is a learning curve to them. For the 6T, gesture navigation has been refined to make every operation and every transition smoother than before. Those who like old-school on-screen button better are free to use those instead.

Camera: lit portraits, stellar night shots

The biggest camera upgrade in the OnePlus 6T comes in the form of a feature called Nightscape. Long story short, it is an advanced HDR night mode that uses visual information from several frames to enhance detail while reducing noise and motion blur. Nightscape photos take 2 seconds to capture, according to OnePlus – longer than a regular shot, but the results should be worth it. Nightscape mode will come to the OnePlus 6 in a week’s time.

Portrait mode images on the OnePlus 6T can be enhanced with the newly introduced Studio Lighting feature. This appears to work in a fashion similar to what we have on the iPhone – when a face is detected in the frame, you’re given the freedom to accentuate certain features by controlling the luminosity of that area. Studio Lightning is available on both the main and the front-facing camera.
As far as specs go, the OnePlus 6T has a camera similar to that of the OnePlus 6, combining a 16MP f1.7 main camera with a 20MP secondary one. It has both OIS and EIS to stabilize shots. Video can be recorded at up to 4K resolution and 60 fps. The front-facing cam shoots 16MP selfies.

Battery and charging

OnePlus phones are known for their rapid charging capabilities, and the OnePlus 6T is no exception. The only difference here is that the tech is simply called Fast Charge now instead of Dash Charge in previous OnePlus phones. Technically, it uses the same fast-charging approach of pumping 5 volts at up to 4 amps from the stock charger.

The battery, however, is now bigger. In fact, the OnePlus 6T packs the biggest battery a OnePlus phone has ever had, holding 3700mAh worth of charge. This is expected to result in a 23% increase in battery life. Wireless charging is still not available, but given the price of the phone, we think we can do without it.

OnePlus 6T price, release date, carrier availability

Thankfully, good guy OnePlus is sticking to its roots. The OnePlus 6T, with all its high-end specs and features, will come at a very aggressive price starting at…

$549 for the 6GB+128GB model

$579 for the 8GB+128GB model

$629 for the 8GB+256GB model.

These prices are for the unlocked model that will be sold on the OnePlus online store. The unlocked OnePlus 6T will work with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

But as we mentioned above, the OnePlus 6T will launch on T-Mobile as well. The 8GB+128GB model is set to land in the carrier’s stores on November 1… with one exception. The un-carrier will have the phone in stock today at its Times Square store in New York.

Furthermore, T-Mobile customers will be able to trade in an eligible phone for $300 off via monthly bill credits – the list includes 33 smartphones such as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the Nexus 6 and first-gen Pixels, the Galaxy S6 series, and every OnePlus model ever launched. Taking advantage of this offer (while it lasts) will bring the price of the 6T down to $11.67 per month for 24 months with $0 down. Or you can simply grab the phone for $24.17 a month without trading in an old handset.

After several weeks of teasers and surprise-spoiling leaks, the LG V40 is now official. It is a phone made for the Android enthusiast, just like every V-series device before it, and blends powerful hardware with elegant looks. Its biggest selling point, however, is that it is adorned by no less than five cameras, including three in the back, giving you a degree of creative freedom no other phone can provide right now.

Design and display

The LG V40 has a lot in common with the V30 and the V35 before it. Metal and glass are once again the materials of choice, while the IP68 water-resistance rating and military-grade drop protection certification indicate that the phone is tougher than it looks. Black and blue are the two color options coming to carriers in the US, although internationally, the phone will also come in grey and raspberry rose.

What’s new, however, is the inclusion of a dedicated Google Assistant key on the left side, while the fingerprint scanner at the back no longer doubles as a power key. The latter is on the right side of the device now.

The LG V40 is taller than the V30, which comes as no surprise knowing that it also jumps from a 6-inch to a 6.4-inch P-OLED display. Its resolution stands at 1440 by 3120 pixels for a 19.5 to 9 aspect ratio and 537 ppi pixel density. This is by far the largest screen a V-series phone has ever offered. The phone is also surprisingly light, weighing 169 grams or 5.96 oz.

And yes, the LG V40 has a notch at the top of its display, containing the earpiece and the two front cameras. The screen area on its sides is used to display your clock, app notification icons, and device status information. Those who aren’t fans of this particular design choice can “hide” the notch by applying a black background to the side screen area.

Hardware and software

The LG V40 ThinQ comes with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. It will be updated to 9.0 Pie eventually, but we don’t yet know when. LG hasn’t changed the software experience much, meaning that if you’ve used a recent LG phone, you’ll find the V40 very familiar. As before, the UI skips the traditional Android app drawer. Navigation is performed via classic on-screen buttons instead of fancy navigation gestures. And extras we know from the LG V30, such as the Floating Bar shortcut panel, are still available.

Running the show is a Snapdragon 845, which is the same chip most other Android high-end phones have under the hood. It is backed by a decent 6GB of RAM, but the 64GB of on-board storage could run out fast for those who shoot lots of photos and video. The LG V40 retains the microSD card slot for storage expansion.

And now comes the interesting part. The LG V40 comes with a total of 5 cameras, which makes it one of the most versatile phones ever when it comes to photo and video capturing. At the back is a 12MP main camera with OIS, a wider, F1.5 aperture for better light sensitivity, and a larger sensor with larger, 1.4-micron pixels (vs the 1-micron pixels we had on the V30). All of these hardware improvements should translate to better image quality than before.

As for the other two cameras, one is a 16MP, 107-degree wide-angle shooter like that on the LG G7, while the other is a 12MP 2X zoom telephoto camera. This camera hardware combination means that you can images from a much broader perspective without having to step back or move closer to your subject. A new feature called Triple Shot will snap three photos at once – one with each camera.

AI technology is once again built into the camera software, but the enhancements go beyond scene recognition. Multi-frame HDR techniques help to bring out the best in each photo, while the shutter speed can be adjusted intelligently depending on how much movement is detected – something that should theoretically minimize motion blur.

Selfies with the LG V40 can be shot with its 8MP front-facing camera, but if you need to fit more friends into the frame, there’s also a 5MP wide-angle camera at your disposal. Both the front and the rear cameras support Portrait Mode for that trendy bokeh effect – which you can now adjust even after you take the shot.

As other phones of its category, the LG V40 can shoot 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. What’s cool is that HDR video recording is also supported and can be enjoyed on the phone’s HDR-capable display.

Sound and multimedia

Earlier this year, LG introduced its Boombox Speaker technology with the LG G7. It is now also present on the LG V40 to boost its low-frequency output – and more dramatically so when the phone is resting on a flat surface. The trick is done by using the phone’s internal volume as a resonance chamber which gives certain frequencies a welcome boost. Unfortunately, the LG V40 still relies on a single bottom-firing speaker, even though stereo speakers have been common among high-end phones for some time.

And yes, LG is keeping the 3.5mm headphone jack. In fact, it is still paired with LG’s 32-bit Quad DAC, capable of driving audiophile-grade, high-impedance headphones with ease.

Battery and charging

The LG V40 has a 3,300mAh battery, which is identical to the one in last year’s LG V30. Our testing so far indicates that the new model should last most people through the day, but won’t beat any battery life benchmarks. But at least we get a fast charger in the box. Fast wireless charging is also supported, if you have a compatible charging pad, of course.

LG V40 price, availability, release date

Interested in getting one? The LG V40 will be launching on October 18 across 5 major US carriers, and while prices will vary, this is without a doubt one expensive phone. Here’s how much it will cost, depending on which carrier you choose to go with:

Verizon: $980

AT&T: To be announced

T-Mobile: $920

Sprint: $960

US Cellular: $900

Those who choose to pre-order an LG V40 will get a free DJI Osmo Mobile 2 gimbal, as well as a 256GB microSD card.

On paper, the Honor View 10 will look very similar to many of you as it’s essentially a rebadged Mate 10 Pro from Honor’s sister-brand Huawei (which we gave 5-stars in our review).

That means you’ll get the Mate 10 Pro’s edge-to-edge 5.99-inch display, with a 18:9 aspect ratio and FullHD resolution.

That’s pretty impressive for a phone of this price (which we’ll get onto later).

The Honor 7X gives you an edge-to-edge screen for under £300

You’ll also get the blazing fast Kirin 970 chipset with Huawei’s Neural Processing Unit, 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The phone supports expandable storage and features a USB-C and 3.5mm headphone jack.

So far, so good then.

It measures just 6.97mm thick, and the fingerprint sensor has been squeezed underneath the screen.

The View 10 will use the 13MP front facing camera for facial unlock. It’s unlikely to be as advanced as the iPhone X’s system, but it’s nice to have options.

It looks like a neat package, and despite it’s affordable price, Honor have always impressed us with its build quality.

It’s even more impressive that the Honor View 10 is priced at a very affordable £449.99 (for comparison, the Mate 10 Pro is priced at £699).

It’ll be available on January 8th.

Apple announced the iPhone X in two colourways, Space Gray or Silver (Stainless Steel), which isn’t good news for fans of Apple’s Gold or Rose Gold variants.

Enter Ten², which will plate your Silver iPhone X in 24ct Gold.

Yep, someone found a way to make iPhone X even more expensive.

Now in the past, gold plated iPhones have always lacked a certain subtlety. They were downright tasteless.

But it turns out Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever is the perfect device to receive the gold plating treatment.

It begs the question, why didn’t Apple release a gold iPhone X Edition (similar to the Apple Watch Edition), and charge £10,000 for it?

The iPhone X just looks right with the glamourous gold edges, check it out in Dom Esposito’s YouTube video below:

There are a few drawbacks. Firstly, Ten² can only do this with the Silver iPhone X at the moment. We’d love to see the Space Grey model plated as well.

Secondly, you’ll need to remove the gold plating if you take your iPhone into Apple for repair, as it probably voids warranty.

Still, they are small prices to pay for such a stunning transformation.

The service costs $399 (around £399) and includes fully insured two-day shipping, 60 day warranty on our plating, $150 plates for touchups, and a tempered glass screen protector and rear film to protect your phone.

Oh, and if 24ct Yellow Gold isn’t your bag, Ten² also offer an 18ct Rose Gold option.

OnePlus has finally unveiled the 5T and in doing so, joined in on the hottest smartphone trend of 2017, banishing the bezels.

The new OnePlus flagship features a 6-inch display in a handset roughly the same size as its predecessor (which only had a 5.5-inch display).

The 5T features a few design tweaks, such as a refined camera bump, but largely, remains the same beautiful smartphone.

The new OLED display has a now familiar 18:9 aspect ratio, and a resolution of 1080×2160. We’ve been using it for a few days now, and it looks great, with bright and saturated colours.

The new display also features a new Sunlight mode which adapts automatically to harsh light to facilitate a great viewing experience.

To make room for the larger screen, OnePlus has moved the finger print sensor to the rear of the device. It’s coated in ceramic, and is just as lightning fast as its front-facing predecessor.

Facial Recognition has also been added to the mix, although, this system simple uses the camera, and is therefore not as advanced as Apple’s system.

Still, it’s nice to have options.

Moving on from the new display, OnePlus’ next biggest update is a new camera system.

The OnePlus 5T features a dual camera setup with one main sensor and one “low-light” sensor, replacing the more traditional wide and tele combo.

The secondary camera is equipped with a large f/1.7 aperture and Intelligent Pixel Technology which merges four pixels into one, reducing noise in low-light environments and enhancing clarity.

It’s an interesting take on the dual camera set up, so we’ll have to see how this fares in our review.

Additional improvements have been made to Portrait Mode to improve noise reduction.

Elsewhere not much else has changed. The OnePlus 5T still packs the Snapdragon 835, 8GB RAM, 64/128GB storage, and Dash Charge for speedy battery replenishment.

Another key element that hasn’t changed is the price, with the OnePlus 5T going on sale with prices starting at £449 ($499 USD).

You’ll be able to purchase the handset on the 21st of November from OnePlus’ website, or O2 Pop-Up shops across the UK.

The iPhone X is here and it is really, really good. Many users are currently in a period of acclimatisation though, as Apple’s flagship handset markedly changes the way you interact with it, mandating the use of a series of new gestures as the iPhone X has no home button. Luckily, thanks to the fact that the iPhone X has an almost bezel-free display, Apple has been able to cram in a wide-variety of replacement Screen Edge Gestures, which not only replace the home button’s functionality but expand on it also.

There’s no doubting though that these new gestures require a little time to get used to, which is why we’ve put together this handy gesture guide to navigating throughout the iOS UI on an iPhone X with no home button. Before we get to the gestures proper though, let’s quickly run over the new iPhone X definitions so we’re all on the same page when we get to the explaining (see boxout).

IPHONE X: NO HOME BUTTON? NO PROBLEM!

How to navigate Home – Ok, this is one of the easiest gestures to get comfortable with. To navigate to Home simply swipe up from the Home Indicator/bottom of the screen.

How to wake iPhone X – Let’s start with what is one of the most used functions, waking the iPhone. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, including pressing the Side button, tapping anywhere on the iPhone’s display, using the ‘Raise to Wake’ option, or opening the iPhone X Leather Folio.

How to sleep iPhone X – There’s not as many ways to sleep the iPhone X as wake it, however, you can do so by both pressing the Side button or closing the iPhone X Leather Folio.

How to raise the App Switcher – Similar to navigating to Home, this requires you to swipe up from the bottom of the screen and then pausing.

How to close apps – And talking of the App Switcher, if you want to close any app then simply open it and then long press on any app card to show a close button. Once the close button is active you can either tap it or swipe the card up to close.

How to delete app icons – This one hasn’t changed. Simply long press on a Home screen app icon for a couple of seconds and then press on the X delete micro button.

How to temporarily disable FaceID – While we are not sure why you would want to do this, as FaceID is everything we’d hoped it would be, you can turn it off for a moment by pressing the Side button five times.

How to activate Siri – Apple’s smart assistant can be raised by either using the tried and tested oration of “Hey Siri”, or by pressing and holding the iPhone X’s side button.

How to jump straight to notifications – A super handy shortcut, simply swipe down from the upper left-hand corner of the iPhone X’s display.

How to get to widgets – This can be achieved in two super easy ways, the first by swiping right from the Home scree, and the second by swiping right from the Notification Center.

How to trigger Spotlight Search – Swipe down from the middle of the display.

How to activate Apple Pay – Apple Pay is becoming more and more wide-spread and, naturally, with an iPhone X you’ll want to make the most of it. To invoke Apple Pay simply press the Side button twice while in close proximity to an NFC-enabled payment system.

How to take a screenshot – Simply press the Side button and Volume Up button simultaneously.

How to force an iPhone X restart – To force restart the iPhone X you need to first press and quickly release Volume Up and then Volume Down, before pressing and holding the Side button for 10 seconds.

And, there you have it – nothing too complicated and, as you’ll see when you’ve spent a day or two using the iPhone X, all rather fast and intuitive. Plus, the bonus you now have is that your phone has a far more spacious display upon which you can work and play.

In our review of the Mi 5 we concluded that it was a fine device, with decent low light camera performance, and decent software as well. It was no Galaxy S7, but it packed in enough processing power to compete with the premium flagships and the OnePlus 2 (and the soon to arrive OnePlus 3).

Later that year, at a Xiaomi event held in China, the internet company announced the Mi Mix Concept smartphone. It seemed like something unbelievable at the time, an almost bezel-less display with a body made of ceramic, designed by famous industrial designer Philippe Starck. It sent tremors across the smartphone world, proving to critics that Xiaomi as a Chinese smartphone brand could innovate. Apart from the display, the device also featured piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology since it could not accommodate an earpiece because of the thin bezels at the top, and the sides. Even the camera was moved down to the chin. The phone never made it to India, but it wasn’t received too well by the reviewers because of its average camera and large size, despite the great build quality using ceramic.

A few months later, around the IFA 2017 event, Xiaomi announced a mass production version of the Mi Mix concept smartphone called the Mi Mix 2. A few months later, it has finally been launched in India at Rs 35,999. So what has improved? Is it a better buy over the OnePlus 5? Or is it just a case of ‘all show and no go’? Let’s find out!

Build and Design: 8.5/10

Having used the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy S8+, the Galaxy Note 8, the LG G6, the iPhone 8 Plus and the OnePlus 5, I must say that Xiaomi has silenced a critic like myself, who looks into the tiniest details that go into the making of these premium smartphones.

It is impressive to see a Chinese smartphone manufacturer come up with something original at a time when every other smartphone looks similar to the one next to it in a retail store. So far the only design that has stood out this year, was the Galaxy S8 that managed to fit in a larger display in a smaller footprint. Samsung did a great job with the curved edges, which rendered the S8 as an almost bezel-less smartphone with bezels just at the top and the bottom.

That edge-to-edge display is stunning! Image: tech2/Rehan Hooda

The Mi Mix 2 is not bezel-less smartphone because well, there are bezels (about 3 mm thin to be precise). It’s just that you keep forgetting about them every time you unlock that display, which appears more like a window into your smartphone. Xiaomi’s software too plays a big role in giving you that impression where the rounded UI elements play nice with the rounded corners of the display. So the software and hardware integration that forms the UI here can only be compared to an Apple iPhone X. But it too has an annoying notch at the top. So Kudos to Xiaomi on this one!

The selfie camera sits at the bottom chin at the right corner, while the ambient light sensor is hidden in the left side of the chin. It is really hard to tell that a sensor is actually present in that area, until you mistakenly cover it and your display goes dim. This becomes a bit of a problem when you hold the smartphone horizontally while playing games.

That ceramic back cover looks natural and classy. Image: tech2/Rehan Hooda

The back cover of the device comes with a proper 2.5D sheet of ceramic and it’s here for a reason. Ceramic is literally scratchproof with most of the objects you will find in your pocket. I usually don’t carry around keys or coins (blame demonetisation for that) in my pockets but even if I did, I think the metal frame would have acquired scratches and scuffs but not the ceramic sheet on the back.

The ‘piano black’ colour of this ceramic sheet is also very unique. Add the 18-carat gold plating for the camera ring and some gold-coloured lettering on the back below it and you have a very premium-looking device that can easily compete with the premium flagship smartphones that are priced a lot higher. The glass on both the front and back did not catch smudges or fingerprints easily. Xiaomi did provide a well-made rubberised case, but I did not end up using it because I wanted to check how the ceramic felt and wore out with daily use (it did not).

The USB Type C port feels a bit unfinished and pokes into your pinky. Image: tech2/Rehan Hooda

So is it the perfect picture? Not exactly. The device is not IP 67 or 68 dust and water resistant. When we quizzed Manu Jain about it. He said, that Xiaomi has yet to begin working with special components needed for delivering such smartphones, and that IP rating would be a gradual move.

Then there’s that unfinished USB Type C port cut-out at the bottom, which kept reminding me that this is a Chinese smartphone. Every time you pick up the phone, and place your pinky at the center of the bottom edge for support, you can feel the sharp edge. But it’s far from the hastily finished machining found all over the OnePlus 5.

All-in-all, at Rs 35,999 I found both the design and construction quality up to the mark, save for that USB port at the bottom, which was a bit annoying. This is because even with that tiny problem, it’s still leagues better than what other manufacturers have on offer in this segment.

Features: 8.5/10

On paper, the Mix 2 appears to be the perfect smartphone, at the perfect price. You get a 5.99-inch Full HD plus IPS LCD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, sporting a resolution of 1,080 x 2,160 pixels. Inside, there’s a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core chipset that is paired with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB of internal storage with no storage expansion.

The camera on the rear features a 12 MP Sony IMX386 sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, PDAF and a 4-axis OIS system accompanied by a dual LED flash. On the front, there’s an f/2.0 aperture lens with a 5 MP sensor behind it for selfies.

Connectivity options include the usual 4G/LTE, 3G, 2G radios, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC and that USB Type C port at the bottom edge.

There’s a fingerprint reader on the back and 3,400 mAh battery inside that also supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology.

Display: 8.5/10

The Mi Mix 2’s display may not be one of the most pixel-dense ones around, but Xiaomi has struck quite the balance here. The display is an IPS LCD unit, supports 16 million colours and covers the front face with an 80 percent screen-to-body ratio. But as penned down in my first impressions I expected the worst, since it did not pack in a Quad HD unit considering the display’s size.

Thankfully, that Full HD plus resolution (1,080 x 2,160 pixels) gives a good 403 PPI pixel density. So despite Xiaomi’s abnormally fine software MIUI V8 elements, I did not spot jagged edges, whether it was icons, text or images.

The Sunlight display worked really well in all lighting conditions. Image: tech2/Rehan Hooda

The colours were spot on in my opinion and were not oversaturated like the AMOLED units on the OnePlus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 (the Note 8 has a better display).

What I like even more, was the fact that it was flat and did not feature curved edges. The curved edges on the Galaxy S8 do eat into your screen’s usable real estate, so while it looks fancy and makes for a bezel-less appearance, it may not necessarily be a good thing.

Considering that this is a Sunlight display, I used the device in almost all lighting conditions. From a dark room, to a dimly lit environment, to coloured lighting and in direct sunlight. I must conclude that Xiaomi has done a fantastic job at tuning this display and loved how it adjusts to various types of lighting to reveal the right colours. There is that barely visible fine red tint, but that’s noticeable when I compare it to the Rs 77,000 iPhone 8’s display. In short, there’s not much to complain and the stuff you get here is incomparable with the rest of the offerings in this range.

Still then, if you are not happy with the way it looks, you can head into display settings and change the tone and the contrast according to your liking.

Software: 8/10

Like always, Xiaomi’s heavily customised MIUI V8 takes up residence in yet another Mi-branded smartphone. This time around, there is a difference.

Rounded corners compliment the UI elements of MIUI V8. Image: tech2/Rehan Hooda

It may look like the same MIUI V8 that we see on other smartphones by the brand, but it feels at home here and this is because of one hardware change, the rounded corners.

It makes a world of a difference for someone like me who installs apps based on what font they use and how well finished their user interface is. So a display with rounded corners and Xiaomi’s minimalist approach with MIUI 8 actually complimented each other in a way few smartphones today can.

A full-screen software experience

The closest comparison to this experience would be the iPhone X, but it too packs in an annoying notch at the top to accommodate it new FaceID system.

The OS feels buttery smooth and there’s hint of slowdown or stuttering. In fact, it felt better and a lot lighter than’s Samsung’s TouchWiz that feels heavier despite looking minimalist with the recent shift to white backgrounds.

I loved the idea of stacking Settings menus and pages in the Recents menu

In the Recents menu, I like the idea of stacking the previously visible menus for apps. Open Settings, then tap on display, hit the home button. Short-press on the options key on the navigation bar and you will see those two pages stacked one behind the other. Even if it works just with the Settings it’s unique and helps you get to that particular page in Settings faster. So far, no other customised version of Android (nor Google) on any other smartphone does this.

With Android 7.1 Nougat on board and the heavy customisation options, I did miss the app shortcuts that you get on stock Android. But there was enough to keep me fidgeting with, thanks in part to the fluid UI, so I did not miss the stock features much.

Yes, third-party apps can be manually stretched to fit the tall display.

Yes, the apps can scale individually to that 18:9 display. So, there are no black bars at the top and the bottom just in case your favourite third-party app does not support taller displays yet. However, the feature to activate the same is buried deeper into the Settings. You will need to go to Settings> Additional Settings> Buttons> Max aspect ratiosettings and then choose which app you need to run full screen. You can even hide the navigation bar for that true fullscreen experience. But unlike the Galaxy S8 (where there is an invisible 3D touch button) you will have to swipe from the bottom to reveal the navigation bar in order to exit an app. How I wished Xiaomi had included a swipe gesture for going back to the homescreen!

Performance: 9/10

As mentioned above, I found the UI buttery smooth and fluid. Another mention Xiaomi deserves here is how smoothly I could scroll through the Google Play Store, without a stutter or a hiccup, which is something I have not seen even on premium flagships lately. Clearly, this proves that Xiaomi has worked on the UI in terms of stability and performance. But what about the rest?

Apps and games remained paused in memory for quite sometime letting me resume gaming after a few hours without the need to reload.

Gaming was not an issue with a Qualcomm 835 and the Adreno 540 GPU on board. The smartphone ran most graphics-intensive 3D games flawlessly (at the highest settings) without a hiccup. I only had a problem with Real Racing 3 as the game simply refused to load from menu to menu (it ran eventually). This, however, could be attributed to the fact that it is a new device and has yet to be optimised by the developer. The phone rarely heated up, unless I was playing these over a 4G connection in direct sunlight (which is the case for most flagships today).

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Performance Bencmarks Infogram

With the 3.5 mm headphone port missing, the only other way to test the audio was via the USB C port. Using the provided USB C to 3.5 mm connector, I was able to experience the true audio quality of the Mi Mix 2. Bluetooth was not really an option as Android Oreo will be the update to bring along a wider choice of higher quality wireless audio formats like Sony’s LDAC. Audio quality while listening to music was quite impressive. It was well balanced while sticking to the right amount of treble and bass making for a great music listening experience. Switching on the headphone and audio effects feature, kind of ruined it, by going a bit too heavy on the bass, despite choosing the ‘general’ setting. As with everything else with MIUI, there is an equaliser that you can customise to your liking.

Voice quality was pretty good over 4G networks but sounded fine over the bottom loudspeaker as well. However, while watching videos using the YouTube app, the volume felt a bit low. Xiaomi can increase the volume level a bit. Hopefully, this should arrive in future software updates. Camera: 7.5/10 Xiaomi included a Sony IMX 386 sensor on the Mi Mix 2. Surprisingly, the same sensor is also available on the Mi Max 2. With so much emphasis on the design, I really had no hopes for camera, but after using the unit for a week, the results were more strange than surprising.

In daylight conditions, the 12 MP rear camera with 4-axis OIS performed really well. It cannot touch the Samsung Galaxy S8, the Note 8 nor the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus in terms of details, but holds well for a smartphone that is priced at Rs 35,999.

Shooting in 18:9 mode, feels like holding a black frame instead of a smartphone. Image: tech2/Rehan Hooda

The display felt more like a frame in my hands considering that there’s little bezel around it. So clicking photos felt like I was holding a cut-out and not a phone with the usual chunky bezels around.

The images looked sharp and colour balance was accurate. The almost Sunlight display also helped me get a better idea about what the actual image looked like instead of the AMOLED displays that do not show you the true toned-down colours of the actual image.

The focussing was quick in daylight but you have to remember to turn the burst mode off in the Camera settings (search for Press and hold shutter button), else all of your images will be out of focus because the burst mode is turned on by default. This is more visible in low light than daylight scenarios, because the Mix 2 has one big problem. It is slow to focus in low light.

While the daylight scenarios produced images that were better than the OnePlus 5, the OnePlus faired leagues better in the dimly lit and low light or twilight scenarios.

In low-light scenario with the Mi Mix 2, shots appeared blurry, because the camera took its own sweet time to lock focus. Whether it was a subject or a scene, in low light, the autofocus just did not work. I had to press down on the shutter button to trigger it every single time to get a decent shot in focus, but even those would turn out blurry because of the disappointing low light image processing.

Images were blotchy, lacked any detail whatsoever and were loaded with luminance noise. But as I found out it was not really the sensor at fault.

I switched to Manual mode and as you can see in the camera samples album, I managed to get some great (if not fantastic) shots, meaning that Xiaomi’s Auto mode image processing was at fault (you will find these on the album, followed by the image shot in Auto mode).

So while the camera performed up to expectations and better than the OnePlus 5 in daylight, it performed a lot worse than the OnePlus 5 in low light scenarios. The OnePlus 5’s DCAF system seems to have surprisingly defeated the PDAF system in low light scenarios. These processing issues can easily be ironed out in a software update, so here’s hoping that Xiaomi works on them and delivers them quickly.

As for the front-facing camera, it was decent and produced pleasing well-exposed images. Video too was above average but not stunning. In short, the video was almost on par with the OnePlus 5, but not better than it. When one looks at the overall camera performance, the OnePlus 5 clearly wins the battle in the camera department.

Battery: 8.5/10

With a 3,400 mAh battery onboard, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 with its 10 nm chipset and Full HD plus display faired pretty well in our standard PC Mark Work 2.0 Battery Life test.

10 hours is pretty good given the specifications it has on offer.

The smartphone lasted a good 10 hours with the test that keeps the screen on continuously during the testing phase.

In day-to-day usage, with 3 email accounts on sync, camera usage, continuous messaging and continuous push emails on one account, the Mix 2 surprisingly lasted the work day with about 20 percent or more to spare for the next day. Clearly, there are no issues and the smartphone performed on par with the OnePlus out here.

Charging the device with the bundled Quick Charger was pretty fast. The device took a little over an hour to charge from 0-100 percent.

Verdict and Pricing in India

The Mi Mix 2 is Xiaomi’s best flagship smartphone offering yet. It almost is an all-rounder if you don’t factor in its abnormal low light camera performance. With that said, it performs equally good as the OnePlus 5 if not better on some fronts (just that it does not come with a Portrait mode).

The Mix 2, however, sets a new standard on one big important factor in the sub Rs 40,000 range, and that’s design. It’s unique, uses exotic materials like ceramic, gold plating and packs in a really good display, all three of which are way better than what the OnePlus 5 offers and eerily close to the premium flagship smartphones like the HTCs and the Samsungs.

It looks and feels better than the OnePlus 5 at Rs 35,999. Image: tech2/Rehan Hooda

Had Xiaomi simply added better image processing and IP 68 dust and water resistance, it would have no problems taking down some premium flagships as well. Thankfully for HTC, the folks at Xiaomi did not.

At Rs 35,999 I would recommend this smartphone over a OnePlus 5 as it delivers a lot more and looks good while it’s at it. Indeed, neither OnePlus nor Nokia see a product like the Mi Mix 2 coming to Indian markets. But it’s a good wakeup call for both Chinese smartphone brands and international brands alike.
