On Monday, Italian local citizen shot dead 54-year-old Idy Diene, a Senegalese street vendor, who had lived in Italy for 20 years. The murderer reportedly wanted to commit a suicide over financial problems but changed his mind and randomly killed Diene, Sputnik reported.

African migrants staged large-scale protests demanding thorough investigation into the case, as they saw racist nature of the incident.

Local residents joined the Senegalese community in a peaceful demonstration on Saturday, which gathered about 10,000 people, according to the La Repubblica newspaper.

Enrico Rossi, the president of the Italian region of Tuscany, and Florence Mayor Dario Nardella also took part in the demonstration. Nardella pledged that Diene’s funerals would be declared a day of mourning in the city.

TEHRAN – French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May will announce a new treaty on how to handle migrants hoping to head to Britain, the French presidency said Wednesday.

The treaty, set to be announced at a summit in London on Thursday, will “complete the Le Touquet accord”, Macron’s office said in reference to a 2003 deal that effectively put Britain’s border in northern France.

The details are “still being finalized”, the French presidency said, but the treaty will include measures on how to manage unaccompanied minors, and Britain will make a “major” financial contribution, AFP reported.

The original text, which came into force in February 2004, implemented joint controls at coastal ports in both countries as Britain, which is not part of Europe’s Schengen visa-free zone, looked to bolster efforts to keep migrants out.

Later accords led to Britain financing some of the controls and security operations in Calais, just across the English Channel from its own port in Dover.

Calais has long been a sore point in French-British relations, and Macron on Wednesday called for better cooperation in managing the border with Britain ahead of his first trip to London as president.

Migrants hoping to stow away on trucks bound for Britain have long been drawn to France’s northern coast, with the squalid “Jungle” camp near Calais once housing some 10,000 people before it was bulldozed by the government in late 2016.

Hundreds of migrants remain in the area, with police routinely breaking up makeshift camps of people hoping to head to Britain, a favored destination for Afghans and east Africans.

French officials argue the Le Touquet deal has worsened Europe’s migrant crisis by creating a huge backflow of migrants in the area, lured by a belief that it is easier to secure asylum and work permits in Britain.

A French human rights commission in 2015 said the accord had made France the “police branch” of Britain’s immigration policies.

Macron made a renegotiation of the Le Touquet deal one of his campaign pledges, and Interior Minister Gerard Collomb signaled Tuesday that Paris would ask Britain to take in more refugees from northern France and increase its funding.

“It’s in their interests that things go well,” Collomb said.

In November, Collomb said there were about 300,000 undocumented migrants in France, and the government registered a record 100,000 asylum claims last year.

TEHRAN – The number of new asylum seekers in Germany has fallen for a second year in a row following the mass influx that peaked in 2015, the government said Sunday.

For all of 2017, “I presume a total of fewer than 200,000 migrants,” Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere was quoted as saying by the Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

The EU’s top economy has taken in more than one million asylum seekers since 2015, around half from conflict-torn Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, in a mass intake that sparked a xenophobic backlash, AFP reported.

The total for 2015 reached 890,000, but arrivals slowed sharply after several Balkans transit countries shuttered their borders and the EU in March 2016 reached a deal with Turkey to stop crossings to the Greek islands.

Arrivals of new asylum seekers to Germany fell back to around 280,000 in 2016.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has come under strong pressure for her liberal immigration policy, and her Bavarian allies the CSU have long pushed for a maximum intake of 200,000 refugees a year.

Merkel has agreed to the figure but labelled it a “benchmark” rather than an iron-cast maximum.

De Maiziere said that by late November this year, the number of new asylum seekers in Germany stood at around 173,000.
