TEHRAN (Iran News) – Canada broke a long-standing policy of declining to support a United Nations resolution. Illegal Israeli settlements condemned by canada is an effort to distance itself from Washington after the administration of President Donald Trump announced it no longer considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank in breach of international law.

The Justin Trudeau government of Canada voted in favor of the resolution put forward by the Palestinian state, North Korea, and Zimbabwe, which condemned Israel over illegal settlements in the West Bank. It was the first vote by Canada against Israel since conservative Canadian leader Stephen Harper came into power in 2006, Daily Sabah reported.

The resolution thats says illegal Israeli settlements are condemned, underlined “the urgency of achieving without delay an end to the Israeli occupation that began in 1967” and called on all states “to continue to support and assist the Palestinian people in the early realization of their right to self-determination”.

Canada’s move followed a change in US policy, with Washington refraining from calling Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories “illegal”.

“After carefully studying all sides of the legal debate, the establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not, per se, inconsistent with international law,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Monday.

There are more than 600,000 Israelis living in more than 200 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. With the expansion of settlements, Palestinians see the chances of finding a two-state solution dimming, as they want these areas for a future state.

The UN Security Council in 2016 demanded a complete stop to the building of settlements and passed a resolution designating them a violation of international law and a major obstacle to peace in the Middle East.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told the US-based CBS program “60 Minutes” that crude prices could spike to “unimaginably high numbers” in case of an armed conflict, Iran News quotes Al-Jazeera report.

“The region represents about 30 percent of the world’s energy supplies, about 20 percent of global trade passages, about four percent of the world GDP (gross domestic product),” the crown prince, also known as MBS, said.

“Imagine all of these three things stop. This means a total collapse of the global economy, and not just Saudi Arabia or the Middle East countries.”

Analysts say Saudi Arabia is using Iran as a scapegoat for its repeated failures in the region, especially its ill-fated war against Yemenis.

MBS urged the world to take “strong and firm action to deter Iran” and prevent the situation from escalating further.

MBS also said that he agreed with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s conclusion that the September 14 attacks on the kingdom’s oil facilities were an act of war by Iran.

The United States, European powers and Saudi Arabia have also blamed the attacks on Iran.

Tehran has strongly refuted any involvement, demanding proof, while Yemen’s Ansarullah has claimed responsibility.

In view of the incidents happening in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, the Iranian president has proposed the “Hormuz Peace Endeavor”, also called HOPE, to allay security concerns in the region with the involvement of all littoral states.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that eight countries have been invited to join the initiative.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned world leaders on Wednesday at the UN General Assembly that “the Persian Gulf region is on the edge of collapse, as a single blunder can fuel a big fire.”

In the same interview, MBS, however, said that he preferred a peaceful resolution because it “is much better than the military one.”

He said that US President Donald Trump should meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to craft a new deal on Tehran’s nuclear program and influence across the Middle East.

In a possible sign of diplomacy, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi announced that he would visit Tehran soon, in an effort to reduce tension in the region, according to Iraqi media.

“Abdul Mahdi, who has arrived from Saudi Arabia wants to invite Saudi Crown Prince bin Salman and the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Baghdad for a meeting,” he was quoted as saying.

Earlier, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said that he was also making an effort to mediate between Tehran and Riyadh. He held talks with Saudi Arabia’s leaders in Riyadh, as well as with Rouhani at the United Nations.

In the 60 Minutes program, the crown prince also denied ordering the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018.

“Absolutely not,” when asked if he ordered the murder. But he said he took full responsibility, “since it was committed by individuals working for the Saudi government.”

The screening program was part of the Global Connections, a section which puts a spotlight on physical and digital connections in cinema in Afghanistan, Syria, Gaza, Iran and other countries in the Middle East.

The festival tries to show the reality of life in the Middle East beyond the prejudices and clichés often portrayed through the non-Middle-Eastern media.

“Dressage” is about Golsa and her friends who rob a corner shop. But while evaluating the booty, they are dismayed to realize that they forgot to take the security camera footage. One of them must return to the crime scene and retrieve it. The vote falls on Golsa, who bravely completes the mission. Her friends’ behavior makes her think, and she hides the hard drive somewhere in secret. But her accomplices and their well-to-do families, worried about their social standing, put more and more pressure on Golsa.

The screening program was also followed by a tribute to Felicetta Ferraro, the former Italian cultural attaché to Iran who died on June 2, 2019 in Florence.

During her tenure of service in Iran (2000-2008), Ferraro efficiently supported academic and cultural cooperation between the University of Tehran and Italian universities and cultural institutions.

When she returned to Italy upon the end of her services, she continued her support of Iranian culture by establishing a publishing house in Italy called Ponte 33 (the Italian translation of “Si-o-Se-Pol”) to introduce Iranian society and Persian speaking countries to European and, in particular, to Italian readers.

She also helped with the organization of many other cultural events related to Iranian and Italian culture, including photo and book exhibitions, seminars and literary panel discussions on both contemporary and classic personalities.
