U.S. imposes new tariffs on imports from China, Canada, Mexico; retaliatory measures expected

TEHRAN (Iran News) United States President Donald Trump has declared new tariffs on imports of goods from China, Mexico, and Canada, claiming that these measures are aimed at curbing the flow of illegal migrants and drugs into his country.

The tariffs, including 25% on all imports from Mexico, 25% on most commodities from Canada, and 10% on Chinese products, are claimed to be carried out in a bid to combat illegal drug trafficking and undocumented migration.

However, the tariffs could result in significant price hikes for consumers of everyday items in the U.S., potentially affecting imports of everything from avocados to vehicles.

In reaction to these tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared retaliatory tariffs on the United States.

Sheinbaum wrote on his X account that he directed the Secretary of Economy to put Plan B into action, which includes both tariff and non-tariff measures to protect Mexico’s interests.

Trudeau announced 25% levies on approximately $155 billion worth of U.S. commodities.

China’s government strongly disapproved of the Trump administration’s decision. China urged the U.S. to engage in honest discussions to prevent further escalation of tensions. The Chinese commerce ministry described the imposition of tariffs as a serious violation of international trade rules. The ministry also will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization to challenge the tariffs.

The new tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Tuesday, utilizing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which permits the U.S. president to regulate imports during a national emergency.

Trump insists that the move is essential for the United States’ safety but acknowledged potential short-term disruptions for American consumers.

Business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, criticized the tariffs, warning such measures would raise prices and disrupt supply chains.

The tariff policy indicates a significant shift from the previous duty-free trade agreements and raises the stakes in what could escalate tensions into a larger trade war.

Iran’s Ambassador to Mexico Alireza Ghazili says economic laws and regulations of Mexico are a major hurdle in way of Iran’s trade with this country and sanctions are considered a major obstacle because Iran cannot strengthen its trade and economic relations with Mexico with the current banking mechanism which obeys Mexico’s regulations.

Speaking in a webinar on reviewing trade capacities between Iran and Latin America, Ghazili said that currently there are good transportation infrastructures in Mexico, adding that Mexico has 125 active ports and 65 airports that 53 airports are international and neighboring with the U.S. is one of the important advantages of this country that can be very effective in the economic fields.

Pointing to the trade exchanges between Mexico and the U.S., he said last year 5m trucks from 50 border checkpoints plied between Mexico and the U.S. and there is strong trade exchange between the two states.

Gharizi added that Mexico is currently among the top 15 world economies, noting that Mexico is the second biggest economy after Brazil in the Latin America and agriculture accounts for 4.1%, industries for 30.7% and services for 65% of Mexico’s GDP.

Pointing to the foreign investment in Mexico, he said that foreign investment in Mexico is around $25b annually and the foreign investment in the country between 1999 and 2021 was around $600b as the U.S. with $281b leads the investors in Mexico.

Gharizi said that Mexico has free trade agreements with 50 countries and it has free trade agreements with 23 countries. He reiterated that Mexico’s economy is export-centered and 90% of Mexico’s exports are done based on the free trade and the U.S. and Canada are the major trade partners of this country.

Speaking on the trade opportunities for cooperation between Iran and Mexico, Gharizi said that since Mexico market has access to the regional markets, the U.S. and Canada, it can be a good opportunity for increasing and strengthening economic ties between Iran and Mexico. He added that abundant workforce, vast resources and mines in Mexico are of the major advantages and properties of Mexico market.

He added that Mexico was 8th agro product exporter in 2020 and it has been above countries like India and Argentina with exporting agro products worth $41b and the country has been one of the leading meat exporters and Iran can take advantage of the livestock and agro capacities of Mexico because all of these products have halal marks.

Gharizi went on to say that one of the major economic challenges of Mexico in way of Iran’s trade with this country is the market-oriented economic regulations of Mexico and this is considered a challenge for Iran which is under the cruel sanctions because Iran cannot strengthen its economic relations with Mexico with the current banking mechanism.

He went on to say that long distance between Iran and Mexico, lack of information about the economic capacities of the two countries, lack of shipping line and lack of proper marketing are of the major challenges ahead of developing the trade relation between Iran and Mexico.

He pointed to the low trade volume of economic relations between Iran and Mexico, saying that while long distance issue is considered a challenge for broadening economic relations with Mexico, Iran’s trade with Brazil has been around $5b and major basic commodities have been imported from Brazil and this has questioned the issue of long distance how Iran can have such a trade with Brazil while failing to have such a trade with Mexico.

Ghazili also criticized lack of shipping line between Iran and Mexico and said while Iran is under sanction, it has shipping line with Brazil but it has been unable to have it with Mexico.

Roberta Jacobson, the former Ambassador to Mexico, was chosen as Biden’s border czar amid pressure from lawmakers to address what some are calling a “crisis” at the Southern border, Fox News reported.

“Consistent with her commitment to serve in the administration’s first 100 days, Ambassador Jacobson will retire from her role as Coordinator at the end of this month,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in a statement.

Sullivan praised Jacobson’s work in shaping the relationship between the US and Mexico and renewed efforts to cooperate with Northern Triangle nations of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, home to many migrant children making the dangerous passage to the US.

More than 16,000 unaccompanied migrant children are in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and another 4,000 in the care of Customs and Border Protection, according to official figures. The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on Thursday that there have been 172,000 migrant encounters in March, of which nearly 19,000 involved unaccompanied children.

The administration has blamed Donald Trump’s dismantling of asylum systems for the “challenge” it faces at the border while Republicans have cited Biden’s immigration policies and messaging.

In a statement to The New York Times, Jacobson praised Biden’s effort to repair and recast the nation’s immigration system after four years under Trump.

“They continue to drive toward the architecture that the president has laid out: an immigration system that is humane, orderly and safe,” she stated in a brief interview, adding, “I leave optimistically. The policy direction is so clearly right for our country.”

She noted that her appointment was always intended to last 100 days, which will expire at the end of April.

Biden has tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to lead diplomatic efforts to work with Mexico and Central American countries on improving conditions in the region. Harris has been sharply criticized for failing to visit the border.

Jacobson told The Times she was confident the administration would make progress in slowing the flow of migrants.

“They know it is something that can’t happen overnight,” she said, but she added that officials in the other countries were motivated to find solutions, as well.

“Diplomacy is a conversation,” she continued, stating, “It’s not a monologue.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Mexico has overtaken Britain to become the country with the third-most deaths due to COVID-19, according to data released by the Health Ministry on Friday night.

Reported fatalities of COVID-19 in Mexico rose 688 from Thursday to reach 46,688, the data shows.

The number of cases rose by a daily record of 8,458 to 424,637. Britain has 46,204 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg reported.

The high death rate in Mexico indicates actual cases may be much higher. In Brazil, which is No. 2 behind the United States with the most number of cases and deaths, the fatality rate is about twice that of Mexico, while cases are about six times higher.

Mexico has been criticized for its lack of testing, leaving officials without information about the illness’ spread. Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell, who’s leading the country’s response on the virus, has acknowledged that while actual cases are much higher than official counts, the Health Ministry’s testing strategy is effective in tracking outbreaks.

As Mexico increasingly becomes a hot spot, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has largely focused on reactivating the economy over enacting strict lockdowns. He’s also downplayed the importance of using masks to slow the virus’ spread. In remarks on July 25, he acknowledged the pandemic has hit the country hard and led to many deaths. He attributed the toll to the prevalence of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Even so, the president maintained the spread of the virus is slowing.

“There are signs coronavirus infections are decreasing and fortunately, even though there have been deaths and it’s something that’s very painful, no one in Mexico has been left without medical attention,” Mr. Lopez Obrador said. “Hospitals haven’t been saturated because we’re alert. We’re addressing the problem in a timely and responsible way.”

The fight began after the end of a baseball match between detainees at the Puente Grande jail near Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco.

A small number of prisoners suddenly attacked another group, prison director Jose Antonio Perez said. The cause of the brawl was not known, he added, AFP reported.

Several wounded inmates were taken to different hospitals with one individual dying during the transfer, authorities said.

Five detainees suspected of participating in the deadly scuffle will be questioned by the prosecutor’s office.

The top security prison was also where Joaquin Guzman, known as “El Chapo”, in 2001 made the first of his jailbreaks — reportedly by hiding in a cart of dirty laundry.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Mexican migration authorities say they have expelled 2,300 Honduran refugees who crossed over from Guatemala with a caravan heading to the US.

The “assisted return” of the Central Americans took place between January 18 and Monday, according to the interior ministry and the National Migration Institute.

A total of 1,064 Honduran refugees were deported on National Guard planes and charter aircraft, they said in a statement.

Another 1,239 were repatriated by land from the southern states of Chiapas and Tabasco, the institute said.

The Central Americans entered Mexico last week from Guatemala with the so-called “2020 Caravan” with the intention of heading to the United States.

Mexican authorities said the deportations were carried out “in compliance with the migration law and with full respect for human rights.”

Members of the National Guard last Thursday used tear gas as they arrested some 800 members of the caravan along the southern border with Guatemala, causing panic among the refugees who included women and children.

Thousands of Central Americans have crossed Mexico toward the United States in caravans in recent years, fleeing chronic poverty and brutal gang violence in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Mexico faces pressure to keep the asylum seekers from crossing its northern border from US President Donald Trump, who last year threatened to impose steep tariffs if the country did not do more to stop a surge of undocumented Central Americans.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador deployed some 26,000 troops to the country’s borders in response.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Mexican forces have fired tear gas at hundreds of Central American refugee people, among them children. as they tried to force their way through the Mexico-Guatemala border after the Mexican government rejected their request to transit toward the United States.

The refugee crowds waded across a river into Mexico on Monday in a chaotic scramble that saw mothers separated from their young children.

Witnesses said several children went missing amid the chaos as the refugees scattered to avoid being detained by Mexican officials.

According to Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM), the mostly Honduran refugees were part of a group of several thousand people that had set off last week from Honduras, fleeing violence and poverty in their homeland.

A migrant told Reuters that “we didn’t come to stay here. We just want to cross to the other side. I don’t want to go back to my country because there is nothing there, just hunger.”

The Honduran ambassador to Mexico said that Mexican authorities have some 1,300 Hondurans in migration centers and will start deporting them back home on Tuesday.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to punish Mexico and Central American countries economically if they fail to curb the refugee flows.

The Trump administration is scrambling to make good on his campaign promises to curb immigration at the US-Mexico border.

Trump’s anti-immigration policy was a centerpiece of his 2016 election campaign and is now a major issue as he seeks re-election this year.

The US president has long promised to build a wall on the US border with Mexico to physically stop the inflow of migrants but has failed to fulfill that pledge so far.

Trump had initially promised that Mexico would pay for his wall. But, when he failed to secure funding from Mexico, he turned to US Congress, which also refused to provide the funds.

Trump launched the “zero tolerance” policy In 2018 that saw more than 2,300 children separated from their parents at the border before the government backed down amid a massive public outcry.

Hosseini said that he is proud to accompany the Iranian community which is among the best communities living in Mexico.

He also added that he has had separate meetings with high-ranking officials of the country responsible for immigration.

The Iranian envoy, in mid-March, held a meeting with Mexico’s President of the Senate of the Republic Martí Batres Guadarram to discuss bilateral ties. Hosseini, in the meeting, underlined the significance of bilateral parliamentary ties as a means to fortify and improve other types of common relations and said that exchanging parliamentary delegations would facilitate reaching the set targets.
