Lack of Funding Leads to Medical Aid Cut from UN

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The United Nations will be forced to suspend three-quarters of the medical aid programs it supports in war-torn Yemen unless emergency funding is secured soon, the spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warned.

Currently, 41 such programs are running in the Middle Eastern nation, where the healthcare system has all but collapsed, and more than 30 of those are slated to be shut down, Rupert Colville said, RT reported.

The timing of the move could create additional hardship for Yemen, with its lack of capacity to deal with the Covid-19 outbreak.

“Our office has received reports of hospitals turning away sick people, some of whom were struggling for breath and with a high fever. There are simply no beds, little equipment, lack of staff, and next to no medicine. Sanitation and clean water are also in short supply,” the UN official said, urging international donors to provide immediate relief.

Yemen has officially registered around 500 Covid-19 cases, but the UN says the lack of testing means the true number of infections is far higher, especially in areas not under government control.

Iran medical aid arrives in Venezuela

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A flight carrying humanitarian medical aid for the COVID-19 pandemic from Iran arrived in Venezuela on Monday.

Venezuela’s government said on Monday that a flight carrying humanitarian aid for the COVID-19 epidemic had arrived from Iran.

“Right now, what we are receiving is different types of testing kits,” Planning Minister Ricardo Menendez said on state television.

Iran’s ambassador to Venezuela, Hojjatollah Soltani, said, “Today we are seeing the arrival of these materials to strengthen Venezuela in its fight against coronavirus.”

Health experts say Venezuela is at high risk in the epidemic due to a broad economic collapse that has severely weakened public hospitals and undermined public services including electricity and running water.

Iran donates medical products to Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran delivered a cargo of anti-coronavirus health and medical products, manufactured by the Iranian ministry of defense, to Afghanistan on Wednesday.

The ceremony was held in the presence of Mohammad Ahadi, Iran’s deputy defense minister for international affairs, and Afghienvoy to Iran Abdol Ghafoor Liwal.

Voicing Iran’s readiness for supplying Afghanistan’s demand for anti-coronavirus products and sharing experiences in this regard with the country, Ahadi said: “Iran has always stood beside Afghanistan in history and has done its effort to support the oppressed Muslim nation of Afghanistan.”

The Afghan ambassador, for his part, expressed thankfulness on behalf of Afghanistan’ President and nation for Iran’s support.

Regarding the Iranian Armed Forces’ capabilities in supply domestic demands of Iran as well as exporting products to foreign countries, Liwal named Iran’s Armed Forces as the ‘glory and pride of Islam’.

He also admired the Islamic Republic of Iran for its successful management against coronavirus and its aid to other countries.

Afghan officials announced on Tuesday that Iran has donated corona kits and laboratory and medical aids to Afghanistan to fight against coronavirus outbreak.
