TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Statistical Center of Iran (SCI) said red meat production in the country surged by almost a quarter last month, compared to May 2019.

The SCI said in a report that government-licensed abattoirs had produced a total of 30,900 metric tons of red meat in the second Persian calendar month, from late April to late May, Press TV reported.

The report said the output showed a 23-percent increase compared to the same period in 2019 and was higher by 41 percent than figures recorded at the end of the previous monthly period this year.

Beef accounted for more than half of the total production of red meat in Iran, with 17,200 tons, said the SCI, adding that beef output had increased by nearly 30 percent compared to May 2019.

Abattoirs produced 11,000 tons of lamb and 2,100 tons of mutton, an increase of 17 percent compared to last year, said the report, adding, however, that camel meat output had decreased by 15 percent over the same period.

The increased meat production in Iran has come despite a government decision in March to tighten rules governing abattoirs to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus disease among workers.

The figures also come several months after the government decided to cut imports of red meat due to an oversupply that that had badly hit the prices late last year.

Iranian farmers hope that demand for red meat would again increase in Iran with the gradual easing of government restrictions related to the pandemic.
