TEHRAN – The indicators of life quality, life expectancy, and achievements in different fields prove great growth among women in Iran since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Increasing rate of women’s literacy and life expectancy is one of the great achievement of the Islamic Revolution, said Masoumeh Ebtekar, vice president for women’s and family affairs, here on Sunday.

Various health services and height increase of Iranians comparing with other countries proves investments in this regard, Mehr News Agency quoted the VP as saying.

Only about 5 percent of Iranian women enjoyed university education in 1979 while currently the rate has increased to 27 percent, she explained.

Iranian women play active role in science production and technology, Ebtekar further elaborated, adding women’s economic role is still on the rise.

Gender equality is rooted in jurisprudential issues and implementing the equality in the society has been one of the goals of Islamic Revolution, she said adding implementing equality in the society involves different aspects, one of them is gender equality pivoting on women issue.

Housewives account for 30% of GDP

The value of women’s home jobs has increased in Iran after the Islamic Revolution and 25-30 percent of Gross Domestic Product is the work of housewives, ISNA quoted Ebtekar as saying.

Speaking at a conference on “feasibility study on the equality of male and female blood money” held in Mashhad, on Sunday the vice president announced that today Iran is more subjected to charges against injustice equality.

Currently, women in Iran enjoy a favorable social position, Ebtekar said adding about 41 percent of state employees and 30 percent of scientific board of universities are women.

About 40 percent of agriculture products are produced by rural women while their blood money still stands half of men, she regretted.

Today, the society’s viewpoint about women has changed greatly and women make great influence on society economically, she concluded.

“Good things are going to happen about this issue and currently we are witnessing the presence of women at sport events in some cities of Iran,” she added.

TEHRAN – It is essential to increase the physical education hours for girl students, Masoumeh Ebtekar, vice president for women’s and family affairs has said.

The importance of increasing young women’s level of physical activity is seen as a priority all over the world.

Studies explore the influence of psychological and social influences, by examining contrasting accounts from young women who ‘always’ and ‘never’ participate in sport or physical activity. The main differences lie with the always participates, relative to the never participates, reporting more positive images of ‘sport’, positive perceptions of their own ability, firm motivations and personal choice to engage in activities and the supporting influence of their friends and family.

Further case study analyses reveal the friendship group as the primary influence over all other factors considered.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Education and the presidential office for women’s and family affairs emphasizing the two subjects of “life skills” and “physical education and refreshment”, Mehr quoted Ebtekar as saying.

Referring the importance of physical education for girls, the VP put the emphasis on presence of specialist physical education teachers at primary schools.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Mohammad Bat’haei stressed the need for more contribution of families to fulfill the aim of more physical education for girls adding the Sina TV network, is an effective tool for interaction of families and schools.

Sina TV network is a national media established and run by the Education Ministry focusing on students and their related issues.

A working group was also assigned to follow up on drawing up a multilateral memorandum of understanding between the presidential office for women’s and family affairs, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Sports and Youths in order to increase the physical education hours for girls studying in first, second and third grades over the current year (March 2018-March 2019).

The administration is determined to take measures for gender equality and creating equal access to social services and job opportunities for women, the female VP made the remarks in a meeting on Saturday in Urmia, adding that women currently occupy 40 percent of governmental positions.

According to the Sixth Five-Year Development Plan (2016-2021), in order to reach a balanced society in policy-making and to achieve a healthy society, the gender equality should be observed, ISNA quoted Ebtekar as saying.

She further noted that women and family have always been an important issue after the Islamic Revolution and women’s share in the society cannot be ignored.

However, Ebtekar went on to add, Iranian women have a far smaller share of management positions compared to their population.

Presently, women comprise 60 percent of the country’s university students and 50 percent of university graduates. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate among women is two times more than men.

According to Ebtekar, President Hassan Rouhani’s administration has developed plans to allocate at least 30 percent of management positions to women.

The bills on ending violence against women, child abuse, and reforming the law as well as improving social security of women are supported and pursued in earnest by the Vice-Presidency of Women and Family Affairs, she concluded.

The proposed national budget bill for the next Iranian calendar year 1397, starting on March 21, 2018, has approved 210 billion rials ($5.25 million) for women’s affairs with an increase of 30 percent year on year, Masoumeh Ebtekar said, regretting, but the problem is with getting the budget.

“Although all executive authorities are helping to overcome the problems of female breadwinners, more efforts are needed to receive this budget,” she said, adding, “We hope that Majlis [the Iranian parliament] will support us in this regard.”

According to official reports, more than 2.5 million female breadwinners live in Iran 70 percent of whom don’t have an appropriate job and need support for employment issues.
