Iran to Appeal against FIFA Ruling on Wilmots

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran Football Federation will lodge an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding former national team head coach Marc Wilmots financial case, the federation’s legal team said.

On Monday, FIFA’s Players’ Status Committee (PSC) ruled that the Iranian federation should pay €6.2 million in compensation to the Belgian who parted ways with Iran last December.

The international football governing body gave the Iranian federation 30 days to pay the sum to its ex-manager.

Meanwhile, Mohammad-Mehdi Nabi, the secretary-general of the federation, said a task force, comprising legal experts, is established in an effort to overturn the FIFA’s verdict in CAS.

Wilmots, 51, had only been in charge of Iran’s national team for six months, replacing Portuguese Carlos Queiroz in June 2019.

Iran began its campaign at the 2022 World Cup Asian qualifiers under the Belgian with easy victories over Hong Kong (2-0) and Cambodia (14-0).

However, a couple of below-par performances saw Iran suffer back-to-back defeats at the hands of Bahrain (1-0) and Iraq (2-1), leaving the Asian powerhouse in third place of Group C – trailing Iraq and Bahrain by five and three points respectively, albeit with a game in hand – before the qualifiers were halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Coach Wilmots Linked with Bordeaux

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Marc Wilmots has reportedly been linked with a move to French club Bordeaux.

According to webgirondins.com, the Belgian coach played for Bordeaux in 2001 and now the French club has set its sight on hiring him as a coach.

Bordeaux is looking for a French-speaking coach to replace Paulo Sousa.

Wilmots has been free since his resignation from the position of Iran coach in December 2019.

The 51-year-old coach had been linked with a move to Turkish giant Fenerbahce in April.

Iran Footbal Federation cancels contract with Marc Wilmots

According To Iran News, Mehr has learned the manager Marc Wilmots has agreed to cancel his contract with Iran’s Football Federation Iran’s national men’s football team.

Belgian manager Marc Wilmots signed a contract on 22nd of May, 2019 to become the coach of Iran’s national men’s football team.

The Mehr News Agency learned on Wednesday afternoon that Wilmots canceled his contract with Iran based on the Iranian Football Federation’s decision.

This is while the national Iranian football team is in a difficult situation to advance to the next stage of the World Cup Qualifiers after the team’s two losses against Bahrain and Iraq in the group stage of the competitions.

According to Mehr correspondent, president of the Iranian Football Federation Mehdi Taj, who flew from Hong Kong to Turkey to hold final negotiations with the representative of the Belgian coach, reached a final decision to cancel the contract with him after lengthy talks.

It is not clear yet whether the Iranian federation will make up for the losses to Wilmots for canceling the contract.

Marc Wilmots Talks about Future of Team Melli

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran national football team head coach Marc Wilmots says that he is facing an intolerable situation in Team Melli.

Iranian federation and Marc Wilmots have reportedly reached a deadlock after Team Melli’s poor results in the 2022 World Cup qualification.

Then, local media reported that the federation is going to terminate Wilmots’s contract by mutual consent.

After that, Wilmots has reacted to the rumors on his Twitter account, posting a message about his future in the Asian team.

“I have taken note of the rumors published in the Iranian press, which are incorrect. The truth is that Iran football federation has created serious contractual violations for me and my staff. We face an intolerable situation,” Wilomots wrote.

“My lawyers work on the case and I don’t want to comment more on the issue,” the Belgian coach added later.

Under guidance of Wilmots, Iran have suffered back-to-back defeats against Bahrain and Iraq in the 2022 World Cup qualification.

Team Melli also sit in third place in Group C with six points, five points adrift of leaders Iraq.

The Iranian media reports suggest that former Persepolis coach Branko Ivankovic is a possible candidate to succeed Wilmots.

Iran national football team have really a tough time after suffering back-to-back defeats against Bahrain and Iraq in the 2022 World Cup qualification.

According To Iran News, The contract’s details of Marc Wilmots and his coaching staff with Iran national football team have been disclosed.

As per the report, Wilmots and his staff has agreed to earn an annual salary of $3.6 million, however the Iranian football federation had announced that it will pay him $1.2 million.

Carlos Queiroz reportedly was the highest-paid coach in Iran’s history, earning, $1.4 million but it was rumored that Wilmots and his staff earn more.

The Belgian coach was appointed as Team Melli coach in mid-May on a three-year-contract.

Under coaching of Wilmots, Iran have defeated Hong Kong and Cambodia and lost to Bahrain in the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asia Cup qualifiers.
Iran will meet Iraq in an important match in Amman on Nov. 14.

According To Iran News, Iran national football team head coach Marc Wilmots is reportedly on the verge of parting company with Team Melli.

According to Nieuwsblad, Wilmots would like to terminate his contract and he is waiting for the response of the Iranian federation.

Wilmots has been nominated to take charge of Belgian club Antwerp.

The Belgian was named as Iran coach in mid-May as Carlos Queiroz’s replacement.

Iran has been scheduled to meet Iraq in Basra on November 14 in the 2022 World Cup qualifier.

Wilmots names Team Melli for first match in qualifiers

Team Melli is pooled in Group C of the second round of qualifiers alongside Iraq, Bahrain, Hong Kong and Cambodia.

Iran will start the campaign on September 10 with an away match against Hong Kong. The team will then host Cambodia on October 10 before facing Bahrain on October 15.

The two top teams of each group bring home the quota for FIFA World Cup while third teams will compete for a playoff match against a yet-to-be-determined team from another continent.

The second round of qualifications will start on September 5, 2019, and will wrap up on June 9, 2020.

The next best 24 teams from the second round of the joint qualifiers will compete in a separate competition for the remaining 12 slots in the 24-team AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

“First of all, I should say that this is not an easy draw for Team Melli,” he said, Iranian football federation reported. Rivals will certainly come to the field with all their power and we will see a high-level competition, he added.

Asked about which team would be Iran’s main rival in the group, Wilmots said Iran respects all its rivals. “We only have one aim and that constantly striving to win the group.”

Iran B, U23 football teams share spoils

In the match closed behind closed doors in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, Mehrdad Mohammadi found the back of the net in the 12th minute for Iran B and Abolfazl Razzaghpour equalized the match in the 67th minute.
Marc Wilmots is going to test the players who are playing in Iran league. Iran B players were given a chance to show their abilities in this match.

Iran U23 football team, headed by Farhad Majidi, are also preparing for the 2020 AFC U23 Championship which will be held in Thailand from January 8 to 26.

The team will also play two friendly matches with Croatia U23 team during the last weekend of October.

Iran determined to beat South Korea: Marc Wilmots

Iran will play South Korea at Seoul World Cup Stadium in the nation’s capital on Tuesday.

It will be a good test for Iran since South Korea haven’t beaten the Middle East powerhouse since January 2011 and are hungry to get revenge on Team Melli.

South Korea, ranked 37th, have nine wins, eight draws and 13 losses against the 21st-ranked Iran. They suffered four consecutive 1-0 losses before taking a scoreless draw in a World Cup qualifying match in August 2017.

“We are ready for the match against South Korea and we want to beat them at their home, however, they are a difficult team to beat in front of their fans” Wilmots said.

“I hate to lose and will do my best not to lose in this match because I know that the critics will put me under pressure,” the ex-Ivory Coast coach added.

“It’s a friendly match but South Korea and Iran want to win the match and we are going to earn a victory like we did against Syria,” Wilmots said.

“South Korea takes advantage of Son Heung-min who has grown a lot with experience from big tournaments like the UEFA Champions League,” he said about Tottenham Hotspur star.
