TEHRAN (Iran News) – Malaysia’s former prime minister Najib Razak was found guilty of corruption on Tuesday in the first trial linked to a multi-billion-dollar scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

The case has been widely seen as a test for Malaysia’s efforts to stamp out corruption and could have big political implications for the Southeast Asian nation.

“After considering all evidence in this trial, I find that the prosecution has successfully proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt,” Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazali said.

Najib has said he would appeal any decision at the federal court and his lawyers sought a delay in sentencing. The corruption charges carry hefty fines and jail terms of up to 15 or 20 years, Reuters reported.

Najib faced seven charges of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of power for allegedly illegally receiving nearly $10 million from former 1MDB unit SRC International. He had pleaded not guilty.

That’s only a fraction of the money that Najib is alleged to have misappropriated from 1MDB. Prosecutors say more than $1 billion of 1MDB funds made its way into his personal accounts – over which he faces a total of 42 criminal charges.

US and Malaysian authorities say a total of $4.5 billion is believed to have been stolen from 1MDB, a fund Najib founded, and used across the world to buy art, a superyacht and fund the “Wolf of Wall Street” movie.

US officials have said the amount of money stolen “from the people of Malaysia is staggering”, with former US attorney-general Jeff Sessions describing the scandal as kleptocracy at its worst.

Allegations of corruption over 1MDB have hung over Najib for more than five years. But the criminal charges came only after his defeat in the 2018 election when his successor Mahathir Mohamad reopened investigations.

“The conviction sends a strong message that leaders will be held accountable for wrongdoings in office,” opposition lawmaker Charles Santiago said. “He can’t steal people’s money and expect to walk free.”

Najib, who was prime minister for nine years, had always maintained his innocence and had said the legal process was a way to clear his name.

His lawyers had argued that he was misled by Malaysian financier Jho Low and other 1MDB officials into believing that the funds banked into his accounts were donated by the Saudi royal family, rather than misappropriated from SRC as prosecutors have alleged. Low denies wrongdoing.

Judge Ghazali told the court it was “far fetched” to believe Najib could have been misled by Low.

Dozens of Najib supporters, gathered outside the courthouse for hours, called for the former premier to be freed and were seen offering prayers.

Najib himself appeared calm, albeit stony-faced.

Since losing the 2018 election, Najib has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity after embarking on an extensive public makeover, adopting a more personable tone to replace his image as a wealthy elite.

His party returned to power in February as part of an alliance led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

The guilty verdict could boost Muhyiddin’s credibility with the public, but create tensions within the coalition in which Najib’s UMNO party is the biggest component.

Sources have said if Najib is found guilty, there’s a real threat of his camp withdrawing support for the government, which has a razor-thin majority.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Malaysia 94-year-old Mahathir Mohamad lost out in the battle to become prime minister on Saturday as the king named former interior minister Muhyiddin Yassin after a week of political turmoil sparked by Mahathir’s resignation.

The decision could again reshape politics in the Southeast Asian country less than two years after an alliance of Mahathir, and old rival Anwar Ibrahim, 72, swept out the former ruling party that had been tarnished by corruption scandals, Reuters reported.

That former ruling party of six decades, the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), was among those that had rallied in support of Muhyiddin, along with the PAS party.

Although Mahathir and Anwar announced on Saturday that they had joined hands again, the palace said in a statement the king made his decision on the basis that Muhyiddin possibly had the support of a majority in Parliament.

“His majesty has decreed that the process of appointing a prime minister cannot be delayed,” it added. “This is the best decision for all.”

Muhyiddin, 72, will be sworn in on Sunday.

“I only ask for all Malaysians to accept the decision announced by the national palace,” Muhyiddin told reporters at his home.

Muhyiddin’s position could still depend on being able to win a confidence vote in Parliament.

There was no immediate reaction from Mahathir, who has been interim prime minister since he resigned, or Anwar.

Salahuddin Ayub, a lawmaker from Mahathir and Anwar’s political coalition, said they would gather evidence to prove they would be able to form a majority in Parliament.

Muhyiddin is from Mahathir’s Bersatu party but had shown himself ready to work with UMNO – from which he had been sacked in 2015 after questioning former prime minister Najib Razak’s handling of the 1MDB corruption scandal.

Najib is now on trial on corruption charges.

UMNO’s fortunes have risen since its 2018 defeat, with Mahathir and Anwar’s Pakatan coalition losing five by-elections in the face of criticism from some Malay voters that it should do more to favor the biggest ethnic group in the country of 32 million.

UMNO, which Mahathir led from 1981 to 2003 during a previous stint as prime minister, supports Malay nationalism.

The latest crisis was sparked by a tussle for power between Mahathir and Anwar that has shaped Malaysian politics for two decades. Mahathir had promised to hand power to Anwar after the 2018 election, but no date had been set.

After resigning last Monday, Mahathir had sought to form a national unity government that would have given him greater powers, but he won little public support while Anwar rejected the plan and put himself forward for the premiership.

Anwar was Mahathir’s deputy and a rising political star when Mahathir was prime minister the first time, but they fell out over how to tackle the Asian financial crisis.

Anwar was arrested and jailed in the late 1990s for sodomy and corruption, charges he says were politically motivated.

As well as personal relationships, politics in Malaysia is shaped by a tangle of ethnic, religious and regional interests. Malaysia is more than half ethnic Malay, but has large ethnic Chinese, Indian and other minorities.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – International Law and United Nations Charter is violated by American sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad told a conference in Qatar on Saturday.

”Malaysia does not support the reimposition of the unilateral sanctions by the US against Iran,” he told the Doha Forum, also attended by Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Reuters reported.

Malaysia and other countries have lost ”a big market” because of the sanctions on Iran, he said.

”United Nations Charter and international law are violated by such sanctions; sanctions can only be applied by the United Nations in accordance with the charter,” he added.

Back in October, Mahathir said Malaysia was being forced to “make it difficult” for Iranians to live normal lives in the country.

“Our ties are very good with Tehran, but we face some very strong pressures from certain quarters, which you may guess,” he said, without naming where the pressure was coming from.

Banks in Malaysia closed accounts of Iranian individuals and companies, because of US sanctions.

“We are forced to do this because if we don’t, they will close our banks abroad. It’s a kind of bullying by very powerful people.”

The US imposed sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program late last year, but Malaysia has maintained good diplomatic ties with Iran.
