TEHRAN (Iran News) – Oil Minister Javad Owji and visiting Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro have exchanged views on bilateral energy cooperation, following the arrival of an Iran-flagged tanker in Venezuelan waters in yet another blow to Washington’s tough sanctions against Tehran and Caracas.

During their meeting on Monday, Owji and Maduro discussed issues related to fuel supplies as well as the export of petroleum products, petrochemical products, and petrochemical catalysts.

They also made decisions on the export of technical and engineering services, the reconstruction and modernization of refineries, and the development of oil and gas fields.

On the same day, an Iran-flagged tanker carrying about 1 million barrels of crude reportedly arrived in Venezuelan waters to deliver its shipment to state-run oil firm PDVSA.

The cargo is the third of Iranian crude supplied by Iran’s Naftiran Intertrade Co (NICO) to Venezuela’s state-run oil firm PDVSA following a supply contract providing the South American nation with lighter crude, Reuters reported on Monday, citing a shipping document.

In early May, the Suezmax tanker Sonia I departed from Iran’s Kharg Island port and touched waters close to Venezuela’s Amuay refinery after a month-long journey, according to an official notice of its arrival and Refinitiv Eikon vessel data.

Two other Iran-flagged tankers, the very large crude carriers (VLCCs) Dino I and Silvia I, had arrived last month at Venezuelan ports carrying the first cargoes of Iranian crude for Venezuela. They later loaded Venezuelan heavy oil and fuel for Iran in exchange, according to the tracking data and PDVSA’s schedules.

Iran has sent several cargos of fuel to Venezuela and helped in refinery repairs since 2020, frustrating Washington’s attempt to slap tough sanctions on both nations.

Last month, Venezuela began importing Iranian heavy crude, widening a swap agreement signed last year to exchange Iranian condensate for Venezuelan heavy crude.

The contract signed by Iranian and Venezuelan state companies in May also covers refurbishing and expanding PDVSA’s 146,000-barrel-per-day El Palito refinery.

“Sputnik V is already here! We are the first country in the Western Hemisphere to begin phase 3 of the clinical trials of this vaccine against COVID-19. On behalf of the Venezuelan people, I thank President Vladimir Putin and the Russian people for their solidarity,” he wrote on Twitter on Friday, TASS reported.

On Friday morning, the first batch of the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine arrived in Venezuela. About 2,000 Venezuelans will participate in clinical trials of the vaccine, according to the authorities. The country’s Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, noted that Venezuela also plans to launch production of the vaccine on its territory.

On August 11, Russia became the first country to register a coronavirus vaccine, which was named Sputnik V. Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said the vaccine created by the N. F. Gamaleya Federal Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology had shown its effectiveness and safety on the outcomes of clinical trials. It was created on a platform that had been used for the development of a number of other vaccines. On August 15, the Russian Health Ministry announced the launch of vaccine production.

In August, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriev said that Russia had received a request for the production and supply of 1 bln doses of the Sputnik V vaccine from 20 states.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Venezuela is working out a new law that will help overcome the effects of US sanctions imposed on the country, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced.

“Venezuela is working on a new anti-sanctions law, it is a constitutional law against US criminal sanctions. We will submit it to the National Assembly on Tuesday,” Maduro said on Sunday, as broadcast on his Twitter account.

According to the Venezuelan president, a new poll will be carried out to find out what kind of damage various sectors of the country’s economy have suffered because of US sanctions.

The new law will include measures that will alleviate negative economic, financial and social effects of US sanctions, Maduro said, Sputnik reported.

A lot of the western sanctions introduced against Venezuela have targeted the country’s state-run oil and gas company Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and its subsidiaries, in an attempt to seize its foreign assets and prevent the firm from completing transactions.

On Monday, the US announced new sanctions against Maduro, imposed over his cooperation with Iran.

On Tuesday, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced fresh sanctions against five Venezuelan individuals. The Treasury Department said they were current or former members of the Venezuelan government who had allegedly colluded with Maduro in a scheme “to manipulate” the parliamentary elections and to undermine any credible opposition challenge to the government. Maduro condemned the sanctions calling them illegal.

In January 2019, Venezuela plunged into a political crisis when the then-head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, Juan Guaido proclaimed himself interim president in a bid to oust reelected President Maduro from power. The United States and most of Western countries have endorsed Guaido and slapped crippling sanctions on Venezuela. Russia, China, Iran, Turkey and other nations have supported Maduro.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela announced the capture of “an American spy” with heavy weapons and money near two refineries in the state of Falcon.

The man is said to be a Marine who worked for the CIA in Iraq.

The spy was trying to collect information on the refineries in Amuay and Cardon, Maduro said in a televised address on Friday. The two facilities are located on the Paraguana Peninsula, along the Venezuelan coast just south of Aruba.

According to the president, the detained American is a member of the US Marine Corps who worked with the CIA in Iraq, and was captured with “heavy, specialized weapons and a large amount of cash.”

Maduro added that he ordered heightened security at all Venezuelan refineries after the spy was captured. Earlier, he said, the country’s Petroleum Ministry discovered and thwarted a plan “to cause an explosion” at the El Palito refinery in Carabobo, west of Caracas, RT reported.

It is a war of revenge by the gringo empire to prevent Venezuela from producing all petroleum derivatives and gasoline

Maduro accused the US of waging an economic war against Venezuela, trying to destroy the country’s oil industry. “They have reached a level of madness,” he said.

Washington has accused Maduro of being a “dictator” and recognized opposition politician Juan Guaido as “interim president” back in January 2019. Despite the support of the US and most Latin American states, however, Guaido has failed in repeated attempts to take power in Caracas.

The US oil embargo has hit Venezuela hard, reducing its exports to lowest levels since 1943 and only rising slightly in August due to special purchases from India. The US has confiscated any property of the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA and redirected it to the coffers of Guaido and his supporters.

The Bank of England likewise blocked Caracas from accessing some $1 billion in gold stored in its vaults, with British judges ruling it rightly belonged to the US-backed politician instead.

Two former members of the US military have already been detained in Venezuela earlier this year. Employees of the Florida-based mercenary outfit Silvercorp, former US Army Special Forces operators (‘Green Berets’) were captured in May, after trying to cross from Colombia. They admitted they were trying to abduct Maduro and install Guaido as president. One of them, Luke Denman, later told Venezuelan TV that Guaido had “greatly misled” them about the situation in Venezuela.

The US government denied any knowledge or involvement in the operation. So did Guaido, insisting he had “no link, commitment or responsibility to Silvercorp or its actions.” Earlier in May, however, the Washington Post had published a 41-page contract between Guaido and Silvercorp referring to him as “commander in chief.”

Denman told the Venezuelan authorities the company’s executives had met with Guaido while he was visiting the White House. He and the other Green Beret, Airan Berry, were sentenced last month to 20 years in prison over the plot.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Nicolas Maduro on Sunday thanked Iran for helping Venezuela overcome US sanctions on its oil industry.

“Iran has completed tasks that we have been developing for 40 years and it has managed to establish a very powerful energy industry. We are helping each other and I think the Iranian experience will help us reinforce our management capacity in all plans and development projects [in Venezuela],” Maduro said in an interview broadcast on state television, Reuters reported.

He did not provide further details of how Iran was helping, noting he should maintain “silence since we are in a war.”

“We are going step by step in many things that we are doing and they (projects) are being guarded, in silence since we are in a war, there is a lot of aggression, a lot of hatred, with those who want to destroy industries that are important to a country. So, we have to act cautiously but also firmly.”

The US has imposed strict sanctions against Iran’s oil industry. Earlier this year, Iran sent several gasoline cargoes to Venezuela to help it overcome fuel shortages, as well as equipment to help state oil company PDVSA repair its dilapidated refineries.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said he’ll be the first to get vaccinated when a COVID-19 vaccine arrives in the country.

“I am pleased that Russia will be the first country in the world to vaccinate its population”, Maduro said in a televised speech on Sunday, Sputnik reported.

“There will be a time when we all get vaccinated and the first to be vaccinated is me. I’m going to get the vaccine, I’m going to set an example”, he added.

Maduro said the government would then vaccinate healthcare workers, elderly people, and those with health conditions.

He went on to accuse the United States of blocking supplies of medicine to Venezuela, singling out Donald Trump’s special envoy, Elliott Abrams.

“They persecute us”, he added. “We are going to buy medicines against the coronavirus and they persecute us, they call the company and tell them, ‘Don’t sell the vaccine to Venezuela’”.

Last Tuesday, Russia became the first country to register a vaccine against the coronavirus. The vaccine, called Sputnik V and developed by the Moscow-based Gamaleya research institute, uses two strains of the adenovirus – which typically causes mild colds – to trigger an immune response.

Sputnik V promises to help people develop immunity against COVID-19 for two years. Health workers are the first to be vaccinated and a national roll-out is scheduled for January 2021.

Russia’s sovereign wealth fund (RDIF) said it had received preliminary applications for more than 1 billion doses of the vaccine from 20 countries

Sergei Melik-Bagdasarov, Russia’s ambassador to Venezuela, said last week that the Maduro government has shown interest in acquiring the vaccine.

He stressed, however, that it is too soon yet to name a specific timeframe for delivery because unilateral US sanctions stall the process.

Venezuela on Sunday reported 1,148 new coronavirus cases and 5 new deaths, bringing the total number of infected patients to 33,755 and the total death toll to 281, according to government figures.

“The ‘Fortune’ became this Monday #25May a symbol of freedom and courage for two peoples: Venezuela and Iran,” tweeted Maduro while posting photos of the Iranian tanker docked in a Venezuelan port.

The tweet came as oil tanker Fortune arrived and docked at its destination in Venezuela, El Palito refinery, to deliver fuel to people who are under the intense pressure of the United States.

The second tanker, Forest, is also in the Venezuelan territory while three other tankers are on the way.

The five tankers deliver some 1.5 million barrels of fuel to Venezuela that despite having abundant reserves, is facing fuel shortage due to illegal US sanctions.

Tehran’s decision to send Iran-flagged tankers to Venezuela amid US sanctions against both countries has infuriated those in the White House with some sources saying that Washington may adopt measures against it.

Iran has vowed to retaliate any aggression against its tankers while noting that it has the inherent right to trade with other countries.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro on Monday announced that 13 mercenaries who were plotting to stage a coup d’etat in the country had been apprehended.

“Thirteen terrorists were caught. We seized materials they intended to use for their plan. We found drugs, dollars, arms, satellite phones, radio receiving sets, and night vision equipment,” Maduro said during a speech in Caracas broadcast by the national TV, TASS reported.

He added that everyone who had taken part in the operation to capture the criminals would be rewarded and promoted.

On May 3, the Venezuelan authorities announced that they had successfully foiled an attempt to infiltrate the country by a mercenary group traveling from Colombia looking to stage a coup d’etat in Venezuela. According to President of Constitutional Assembly Diosdado Cabello, the mercenaries were trying to break through into the country aboard boats.

Colombia rejected the statement of the Venezuelan side. According to the Colombian authorities, Caracas is putting forward unfounded accusations against Bogota to distract from the country’s domestic issues.

The political crisis in Venezuela exacerbated on January 23, 2019, when Juan Guaido, Venezuelan opposition leader and parliament speaker, whose appointment to that position had been canceled by the country’s Supreme Court, declared himself interim president at a rally in the country’s capital of Caracas. Several countries, including the United States, and most of the EU states recognized him.

In contrast, Russia, Belarus, Bolivia, Iran, Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Syria, and Turkey voiced support for Maduro, who has blasted the move as a coup staged by Washington and said he was severing diplomatic ties with the US.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ordered on Sunday a “collective quarantine” in seven states, including the capital Caracas, from Monday to stem the spread of the new coronavirus pandemic.

All activities in the seven states are to be suspended from 5:00 am on Monday, except food distribution, health services, transport and security, Maduro said in a television address to his crisis-devastated nation where the economy had already collapsed long before the pandemic struck, AFP reported.

“It’s not a collective vacation, no. It’s a collective quarantine that deserves great social discipline, great self-control,” said Venezuelan President, adding that it meant people should stay “at home.”

Caracas alone is home to six million people.

This latest measure to combat the global pandemic comes after Maduro previously banned flights to and from Europe, Colombia, Panama and the Dominican Republic, as well as a suspending school and university classes, and sports events.

Venezuela reported seven new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, taking its total to 17.

Maduro said the quarantine was “the only way, there’s no other option.”

The socialist leader has said his response was inspired by that of China, one of Venezuela’s main commercial allies.

China put tens of millions of people under lockdown to help contain the spread of the virus, which has affected more than 80,000 Chinese and killed more than 3,000.

“The only way to contain the channels of transmission is to enter in a drastic phase of collective quarantine throughout the country,” said Maduro.
