Cinemas, theaters, concert halls reopen in Iran

TEHRAN (Iran News) – National Headquarters for Managing and Fighting the Coronavirus agreed to open cinemas, theaters, and concert halls in Iran as of June 21.

Iran President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that cinemas, theaters, and concert halls can reopen only if they sell tickets for 50 percent of the seats and abide by all health protocols to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Headquarters for Managing and Fighting the Coronavirus, President Rouhani said language, music, Qur’an, and cinema institutes can also reopen as of June 13 given that they observe all health protocols, IRNA wrote.

It was also decided that kindergartens reopen as of next week.

Iran’s Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, in separate letters, has already addressed the Ministry of Health and Medical Education to expedite the reopening of cultural and artistic centers while considering the livelihood of people who work in the arts and culture sector.

According to Mohammad Mehdi Tabatabaei-Nejad, the deputy head of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance’s Organization of Cinema and Audiovisual Affairs, it was said on May 19 that Iran’s cinemas might reopen in June.

Even before that, it was slated that cinemas might reopen by Eid al-Fitr (May 24), which marks the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, in case everything goes ahead desirably in terms of curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

Iran Reopens Mosques on Saturday

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Mosques across Iran would reopen as of Saturday in full compliance with the health protocols, President Hassan Rouhani said.

Addressing a Saturday meeting of the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, Rouhani said mosques across Iran would reopen for daily congregational prayers in conformity with the health regulations to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Reopening mosques after a weeks-long closure due to the outbreak of coronavirus was a public demand, the president said, stressing that all worshippers must observe the social distancing instructions and conform with the protocols in the places of worship.

He noted that the restriction on the opening hours of shopping centers until 6 pm has also been lifted.

The new reopening decisions do not mean that the coronavirus threat has ended, the president added, stressing that all citizens must proceed with extreme caution in their daily activities.

He further advised travelers to observe the health regulations in order to prevent a new wave of outbreak and consequent restrictions in certain cities.

“We need to change the previous lifestyle for a long period,” the president said, adding that people have to get used to social distancing instructions.

On Friday, the Health Ministry spokesperson said around 115,000 coronavirus positive cases have recovered from the infectious disease in Iran.

More than 146,000 people have been infected with COVID-19 in Iran so far, and the death toll has exceeded 7,600, he said.

Iran President: Measures Be Made to Resume Foreign Travels

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani ordered three ministries to formulate the necessary health protocols to allow for the resumption of inevitable foreign travels to or from Iran.

In a Saturday meeting with the chairpersons of committees of the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, Rouhani stressed the need for the formulation of detailed protocols to make it possible for Iranian or foreign nationals to make the necessary travels to Iran or leave the country amid the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The president assigned the Health Ministry to coordinate efforts with the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development to define the necessary health protocols relating to the travels and bring them into force after being ratified by the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters.

The new health protocols should allow for the necessary travels, which are mainly business travels for trade with other countries, and also for the repatriation of the Iranian citizens, Rouhani said.

The president also called on the Health Ministry and the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology to cooperate with domestic knowledge-based companies and support their plans for the production of the software and test kits for COVID-19 diagnosis.

He further assigned the Ministry of Health to use the internationally recognized criteria to categorize the country’s provinces and cities according to the status of the coronavirus outbreak, define three separate zones, and begin to enforce the necessary protocols for each category on the basis of the defined criteria.

The daily death toll from the novel coronavirus in Iran dropped for the fifth day in a row on Saturday, as nearly 56,000 positive cases have fully recovered from the disease across the country.
