The comments of Kim Jong Un came before war veterans marking the 67th anniversary of the end of the 1950-53 War between North and South Korea.

He said his country’s hard-won nuclear weapons were a solid security guarantee and a “reliable, effective” deterrent that could prevent a second Korean War, state media reported Tuesday.

The North Korean leader said in his speech Monday his country has tried to become “a nuclear state” with “an absolute might” to prevent another war and that it has now built such a deterrent, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

“Now, we’ve changed to a country which can defend itself reliably and unwaveringly against high-intensity pressures and military threats and blackmailing by imperialistic reactionaries and hostile forces,” Kim said.

“There won’t be any war on this land again and our national security and future will be guaranteed firmly and permanently because of our reliable, effective self-defensive nuclear deterrent,” Kim said.

Kim’s speech followed recent remarks by both North Korean and US officials suggesting they were reluctant to engage in a new round of diplomacy on the North’s nuclear program anytime soon.

North Korea exploded the liaison office at 2:49 p.m., the South Korean unification ministry said.

Earlier, military sources said that smoke was seen and an explosion was heard from the border town.

The explosion came just days after Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, warned Saturday night, “Before long, a tragic scene of the useless North-South joint liaison office completely collapsed would be seen”, Yonhap news agency reported.

North Korea has been lashing out at South Korea for failing to stop defectors from sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border via balloons.

The liaison office was launched in September 2018 to facilitate inter-Korean exchange and cooperation amid a reconciliatory mood created by summit talks between their leaders.

The two Koreas had suspended its operation since early January over concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, North Korea defined South Korea as an “enemy” and vowed to cut off all communication lines in anger over leaflets sent by activists in South Korea.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – North Korea rebuked the US on Thursday for criticizing its decision to cut communication links with South, warning it to stay out of inter-Korean affairs if it wanted to ensure a smooth presidential election.

In a statement carried by the KCNA news agency, a senior North Korean foreign ministry official slammed the “double-dealing attitudes” of the US as “disgusting”.

Washington should “hold its tongue and mind its internal affairs first”, said Kwon Jong Gun, director-general of the Department of US Affairs, if it wanted to avoid experiencing a “hair-raiser” and ensure the “easy holding” of November’s presidential vote, AFP reported.

The implicit threat comes just a day before the two-year anniversary of the landmark summit in Singapore where Kim Jong Un shook hands with Donald Trump, becoming the first North Korean leader to meet a sitting US president.

Negotiations over the North’s nuclear program have been deadlocked since the collapse of a second Trump-Kim meeting in Hanoi last year over what Pyongyang would be willing to give up in exchange for sanctions relief.

Analysts say it has taken no substantive steps towards giving up its weapons but the impasse has left Pyongyang frustrated over the lack of concessions.

It has increasingly turned its anger towards Seoul rather than Washington, carrying out a series of weapons tests in recent months.

Since last week it has issued a series of vitriolic denunciations of the South, and on Tuesday announced it was cutting all official communication links with its neighbor.

The US State Department said it was “disappointed” by the decision.

Seoul and Washington are security allies and the US stations, 28,500 troops, in the South to protect it from its neighbor.

Pyongyang is subject to multiple UN Security Council sanctions over its banned weapons programs but has carried out a series of tests in recent months – often describing them as multiple launch rocket systems, although Japan and the US have called them ballistic missiles.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – North Korea is severing all official communication links with the South, it announced Tuesday in a move analysts said was aimed at manufacturing a crisis on the divided peninsula.

Since last week the North has issued a series of vitriolic denunciations of the South over activists sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets over the border — something defectors do on a regular basis.

Authorities in the North have organized large-scale rallies of citizens across the country in support of their threats, which come with inter-Korean ties at a standstill for months despite three summits between the North’s leader Kim Jong Un and the South’s President Moon Jae-in in 2018.

The move will cut all official communication links between the two sides, but the immediate effect will be limited — Pyongyang has refused to engage with Seoul for months, with few if any conversations on the lines aside from test calls.

The latest development comes just three days before the two-year anniversary of a landmark summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump in Singapore.

Negotiations over the North’s nuclear programme have been deadlocked since the collapse of the second meeting in Hanoi last year over what the North would be willing to give up in exchange for sanctions relief.

The impasse has left Pyongyang increasingly frustrated over the lack of concessions and analysts say it has taken no substantive steps towards giving up its weapons.

It has increasingly turned its anger towards Seoul rather than Washington, carrying out a series of weapons tests and other provocations in recent months — including last month shooting at a Southern guardpost in the Demilitarized Zone that divides the peninsula.

Pyongyang “will completely cut off and shut down the liaison line” between North and South from noon on Tuesday, the official Korean Central News Agency said, along with military hotlines and a communication link between the headquarters of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party and the South’s presidential office.

The decision was taken by Kim Yo Jong, the leader’s sister and key adviser, and ruling party vice chairman Kim Yong Chol, KCNA said, in an explicit demonstration of the sibling’s increasing authority in government.

Last week she issued a statement threatening to scrap a military pact with the South and close a liaison office — where activities have already been suspended for months due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Calls by the South to the North on the hotlines went unanswered on Tuesday morning, officials in Seoul said, AFP reported.

Tuesday’s statement repeatedly denounced defectors who send leaflets to the North by balloon and bottle criticizing Kim over his weapons programmes and human rights abuses. It called them “disgusting riff-raff” and accused Seoul of complicity in their actions.

“This has driven the inter-Korean relations into a catastrophe,” KCNA said, describing Seoul as an “enemy”.

“We have reached a conclusion that there is no need to sit face to face with the south Korean authorities and there is no issue to discuss with them.”

Analysts say the move signals an acceleration in Pyongyang’s strategy to ramp up pressure on the South.

Since last month’s DMZ shooting — which the South repeatedly insisted was accidental — the North has “tried to shake up the situation with a low-level provocation”, said Shin Beom-chul, an analyst at the Korea Research Institute for National Strategy.

“It is trying to shake South Korea’s policy towards the North,” he said.

“With Kim Yo Jong in charge, this won’t be a one-time thing,” he added. “They are starting with South Korea and the hard-line stance will expand to the US.”

The two sides remain technically at war after the Korean War hostilities ended with an armistice in 1953 that was never replaced with a peace treaty.

Pyongyang is subject to multiple UN Security Council sanctions over its banned weapons programmes but has carried out a series of tests in recent months — often describing them as multiple launch rocket systems, although Japan and the US have called them ballistic missiles.
