TEHRAN (Iran News) – The spokesman of the Iranian Army says experts are going to operate investigation on every aspect of a deadly accident that occurred to a Navy vessel, Konarak, in the southern waters this week.

Brigadier General Shahin Taghikhani dismissed on Wednesday the baseless claims circulating in some foreign media about the accident, saying that such moves are aimed at “misleading and affecting the public opinion”.

Any comment on the Konarak accident will be made after the outcome of the investigation is announced,” he added.

He called for awareness against the enemies’ moves against the Islamic Republic, saying that the ill-wishers of the country have always been trying to grasp any opportunity to create rifts among the armed forces, including the Army, IRGC, and the Defense Ministry.

As many as 19 people were martyred and 15 others injured in an incident involving the Iranian Navy’s Konarak logistical vessel on Sunday, during a naval exercise near the waters lying close to Jask and Chabahar ports.

Naval relief and rescue teams reached the location shortly after the incident, retrieving the injured and the martyrs from the vessel and transferring them to medical centers.

According to the Army, the injured are currently in stable condition.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A funeral procession was held on Tuesday for 19 victims who died in a maritime incident involving the navy’s Konarak support vessel in the country’s southern waters in the Sea of Oman.

The ceremony took place in the southwestern port city of Chabahar, with the military top brass and state officials in attendance, while observing social distancing rules in place to curb the coronavirus outbreak.

The accident, which also left 15 others injured, occurred on Sunday when a number of vessels were conducting exercises near the waters lying close to Jask and Chabahar ports, the navy said in a statement on Monday.

The damaged boat had been towed ashore for “technical investigations,” it said, calling on people to “avoid speculation” until investigations are completed.

A photograph released by Iran’s Army showed burn marks and some damage to the vessel.

aja.ir

Weighing 447 tons and 47 meters (154 feet) long, the Hendijan-class vessel was equipped with four cruise missiles. It was overhauled in 2018 and was able to launch sea and anti-ship missiles. The Dutch-made, 47-meter (155-foot) vessel was in service since 1988 and had a capacity of 40 tons.

The boat usually carried a crew of 20 sailors. It was not immediately clear how many crew members had been on board the warship at the time of the accident.

President Hassan Rouhani and other officials including the Armed Forces chief of staff, the army chief, the commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, and the foreign minister offered their condolences to the sailors’ families in separate messages.

Iran regularly holds exercises in the Sea of Oman, which is close to the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20 percent of the world’s oil trade passes.

Press TV, AFP, and AP contributed to this story

“The Embassy of Lebanon in Tehran extends its condolences to the Government and People of Iran, and to the Iranian Navy on the sad loss of life resulting from the tragic incident happened for Konarak vessel in the Gulf Oman yesterday. We further extend our deepest sympathies to the families and loves ones of the 19 Navy personnel who lost their lives, and wish those who have injured a speedy recovery,” the Lebanese Embassy in Tehran said in a tweet on Tuesday.

According to Iran’s Navy, the incident happened when a number of the Navy vessels were carrying an exercise off the coasts of Jask and Chabahar southeast of Iran.

After the incident, the casualties were dispatched to the Haft-e Tir Pier in Chabahar, and transferred to the city’s Imam Ali (PBUH) Hospital via ten ambulances.

An informed military source, meanwhile, dismissed reports that the vessel had been totally destroyed in the incident, saying it had been towed to the shore afterward.
