TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran held the latest edition of its prestigious Khwarizmi International Award festival, presenting more than a dozen domestic and foreign research projects with the event’s special accolade.

The 33rd edition of the Khwarizmi International Award was held at the International Conference Center in Tehran on Monday in the presence of President Hassan Rouhani; Science, Research, and Technology Minister Mansour Gholami; and Vice President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari.

Addressing the event, President Rouhani said the US sanctions and “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran have failed to stop its scientific progress.

“The society should have hope in the future. It is a source of pride that sanctions have failed to break us,” he said.

Rouhani said Iran would have a better rate of scientific progress if it were not under sanctions imposed by the US.

He said Iran was able to “stand on its own feet” and achieve scientific advances while it was subject to tough sanctions.

The award-winning projects this year, 10 conducted by Iranian researchers and five by foreign contestants, included those related to the development of solar energy, synthesis of the raw materials required for making peptide radiopharmaceuticals, research and development in the area of medicinal substances, and malware analysis platform.

The US has since 2018 been attempting to break Iran with an array of measures, including sanctions targeting various sectors of the Iranian economy and science as well as cyber sabotage and assassinations.

The message is read as follows, “World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is very proud of its long-term interaction and cooperation with prestigious Iranian Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in a way that WIPO has interacted with IKA since its establishment in 1987.”

“Islamic Republic of Iran has joined many key international treaties with regard to the intellectual property since its establishment in 2001. Moreover, Iran enjoys widespread scientific and cultural capacities, so that the country has increased its national and international innovations significantly.”

Khwarizmi International Award (KIA) is held every year at the initiation of Iran Industrial and Scientific Research Organization in order to identify, introduce and support innovators and top researchers of the country.

The 32nd edition of Khwarizmi Intl. Award (KIA) wrapped up its work on Monday in the presence of Vice President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari and Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mansour Gholami.

]]> The 32nd Khwarizmi International Award wrapped up today after naming 16 top research works selected from 271 Iranian and 111 foreign researchers form 40 countries across the world.

The Award is established in memory of Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, the Iranian mathematician and astronomer, and is dedicated to recognizing outstanding scientific achievements made by researchers, inventors and innovators from all over the world.

The international category includes laureates from the UK, Switzerland, Greece, China and the United States.

The laureates for the international section of the 32nd Khwarizmi International Award are:

Prof. Habib Zaidi (Switzerland) for his paper on advanced hybrid imaging PET/MR system

Prof. John Yates (US) for his paper on the study of proteins function using mass spectrometry and proteomics

Prof. Dongyuan Zhao (China) for his paper on the interfacial assembly and synthesis of ordered mesoporous materials for applications

Prof. George Chrousos (Greece) for his paper on the Biology and medicine of stress and stress-related disorders

Prof. Stephen Holgate (UK) for his paper on understanding the pathobiology of asthma and allied disorders

Prof. Peidong Yang (USA) for his paper on semiconductor nanowire technology for energy conversion and storage
